HiveSide at The Studer Farms - Gurnee, IL The groups will meet at the "Gurnee - 41Apiary" where Studer's local honeybee queens are produced. We will begin by sharing a brief HiveSide talk about our "2015 Summer Queen's" and their production, followed by an on site talk and demonstration of how we set our hives up for "summer management". Our goal is to have our bees ready for the colder confinement period at the start of overwintering. Please bring your own chair and protective bee attire including a veil. No gloves please. You will be near and viewing live summer season bees. There will be time for questions. Site conditions at this apiary best accommodates smaller groups. The programs will be similar. Each group is limited in size with its own visitation schedule. There may be a waiting list for each group, if you are confirmed to attend and can not, please let us know in advance so we may allow others a chance to attend.
Our Local Queen Rearing Process - Requires a lot of resources, special knowledge, skills, and the proper weather conditions to make quality queens. Scott Drabicki will explain some of the time sensitive challenges of the process and briefly explain the grafting he does into artificial cell cups. You will also see his hand crafted mating lodges and some of the occupants. Winter preparation at The Studer Farms, includes the introduction of a young well mated "local summer queen" for each colony we build to overwinter. We will demonstrate how we introduce a new queen to a colony.
Effective Summer Colony Management = Overwintering Resources To visually comprehend the importance and advantage of effective summer preparation, we will demonstrate our overwintering set up. We use a "Langstroth" type hive" and will point out the advantages of its architecture, regarding our local overwintering concerns. We believe that young laying queens from northern hardy survivor stock, colony health, summer preparation, winter stores, hive setup, mobility, the ability to provide supplemental feeding, are all part of timely active winter management that can impact the overwintering results. We will share with you the October Benchmark, that our management choices support when preparing our colonies for the overwintering confinement. We will also review and demonstrate taking a sampling of bees to monitor a colony's varroa mite count, using powdered sugar and a screened mason jar. 1 of 2
Special Notes- Additional instructions to the apiary site will be sent when your payment and registration is confirmed by email. Registration is available until class is full. A waiting list will be created if by chance there is any last minute cancellations. If weather conditions do not allow for the outdoor program as scheduled, your class selection may be rescheduled for a different time block on Sunday, July 12, 2015, as the weather forecast will allow. [email protected] or 224-280-3070. The "outdoor classroom" will be held in a primitive apiary environment with active hives. It may not be suitable or accommodating to all persons. In recent weeks, skunks, raccoons, rabbits, birds, deer, ticks, mosquitos, flys, bats, wasps, and various bees have been sighted and experienced at our apiary. Please use safe judgement, proper beekeeping attire is required, please do not bring previously used gloves to the apiary as part of your attire.(none should be needed) Each HiveSide Class has a minimum and a maximum number of students. Payment is required for advance registration, sorry no walk-ins.
