September 26, 2017 TO: CUSD Board FROM: Diana F. Rigby, Superintendent RE: Annual Goals 2017-18 ___________________________________________________________________ A. STUDENT LEARNING Goal : By June 2018, more than 96% seniors will graduate, more than 50% of students in grades 5,8,11 will achieve grade level proficiency in math and more than 60% in ELA ,and more than 30% ELL students will be redesignated as Fluent English Proficient students by Grade 8, and more than 80% ELL students will score Early Advanced or Advanced on the ELPAC. Key Actions: 1. K12 teachers participate in ELD professional learning to improve K12 ELD programs and collaborate on a regular basis with SBCOE Dr. Pagan to monitor the progress of ELD program improvements. 2. CHS and CMS teachers implement strategies for ELD integration, a new English program, and reading and writing interventions during extended learning time. 3. CHS, CMS, RHS/FHS math teachers will collaborate to align grades 6-12 math programs. 4. CHS and CMS PLC meetings are held regularly to monitor student progress and adjust instruction. 5. Canalino will pilot a Dual language Immersion program for two Kindergarten classrooms. 6. TK program will be provided to increase students’ readiness for school. 7. Collaboration with CCP and preschool special education will continue to increase students’ readiness for schools. 8. K2 teachers implement daily 30 minute designated ELD program, K5 teachers pilot new ELA program, and reading and writing interventions are provided to small groups of high needs students. 9. K5 Grade level teams monitor student progress in both reading and math by analyzing common assessment data to adjust instruction and to provide targeted instruction with RtI groups. 10. K5 teachers implement new math program , Bridges, and participate in monthly professional learning to monitor implementation and student progress. 11. K12 teachers will implement Edmentum software to provide students with additional support in ELA and math.
12. CHS administration, CTE Counselor, and teachers will increase outreach efforts to increase student enrollment in CTE courses. 13. CMS administration will facilitate a teacher committee to review and improve course offerings to include CTE courses and electives in the Middle School. 14. Alternative HS program at Rincon/Foothill will provide targeted intervention for high needs HS students. 15. Leadership team meets 2x monthly to reflect on and improve school and district leadership practices to promote increased professional collaboration and student achievement. 16. Provide effective coaching and helpful support for the new CMS principal and HR Director. Goal: By June 2018, all students’ learning experiences will be personalized, engaging , standards-based, and will include skills/strategies for career and college readiness. Key Actions: 1. K12 teachers implement high quality, standards-based, and differentiated instruction for all students. 2. K12 teachers will increase students’ digital literacy skills by using digital tools and Google Apps , and CMS/CHS/RHS/FHS will discuss 1:1 learning environments. 3. K12 teachers will participate in professional learning for the Next Generation Science Standards, and the District Science Leadership Team will lead the implementation of NGSS by their participation in the Channel Islands Regional Science Initiative (CIRSI). 4. A-G completion and postsecondary options including SBCC/Promise will be included in all educational plans for students. 5. All Grade 9 students will participate in Get focused, Stay Focused program. 6. CMS and CHS students will participate in AVID classes. B. SAFE AND RESPECTFUL SCHOOLS- POSITIVE SCHOOL CLIMATES Goal: By June 2018, more than 90% staff, students, and parents will report that our schools are safe and respectful. Key Actions: 1. The District Safety Committee will meet monthly to monitor safety throughout the district and to provide recommendations for improvements. 2. School safety plans will be reviewed, updated, and implemented. 3. Measure U construction will begin to replace old facilities with new ones. 4. School Administration will increase daily average attendance to more than 97%. 5. CMS, CHS, RHS will decrease suspensions and expulsions to less than 1%, and K5 will decrease behavior referrals to the Principal by 10%. 6. At CMS, “Where Everyone Belongs “ mentors from Grade 8 will work with Grade 6 students to orient students about school culture and services.
7. At CHS, Link Crew mentors from grades 11 and 12 support Grade 9 students during their first year in high school, and all ninth graders meet with Attitude Harmony and Achievement facilitators to support adolescent social-emotional growth. 8. K8 schools will implement positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) to increase positive and respectful student behavior. 9. District Administrators will participate in an orientation to Restorative Justice programs . 10. School counselors, school psychologist, and mental health counselors will provide a continuum of support for students’ social and emotional growth and will monitor student progress. 11. District mental health team will meet on a monthly basis to discuss classroom strategies and schoolwide programs to improve students’ emotional well-being. 12. After School programs are provided at Aliso, Canalino, CMS, and CHS. 13. Meet monthly with Supt. Parent Advisory Committee to improve parent communication. 14. School Principals will regularly communicate with parents through ParentSquare, mobile apps, school newsletters, and information nights. C. EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE DISTRICT OPERATIONS Goal : Develop 2018-19 unrestricted budget to support educational programs while maintaining sustainability and reducing deficit spending. Key Action: 1. Work with Leadership Team and CUSD Board to develop a budget that supports the LCAP and is sustainable. Goal: Automate all business office and HR functions to increase efficiency. Key Action: 1. Work with CBO and HR Director to utilize software to replace the outdated paper systems and to digitize all the required paper documents. Goal: Update Board Policies. Key Action: 1. Meet monthly with Board Policy Subcommittee to review and update Board policies. Goal: Increase collaboration with Union leadership and negotiate successor agreement for 2018-2021. Key Action: 1. Meet regularly with Union leadership to resolve concerns and participate in negotiations. D. COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT Goal: Build support, consensus, and community engagement for the district using a variety of communication strategies. Key Actions:
1.
Meet with community groups and business leaders , City Government, and local public agencies on a regular basis. 2. Participate on SBCEO, Partners in Education, CCP Board, Boys and Girls Club Community Committee, Carpinteria Education Foundation Board, Measure U Committee, Fighting Back, and THRIVE. 3. Provide regular district updates through CUSD Board meetings, district website, and social media.
