Career & Technology Foundation (CTF) Course Descriptions 2016­17    

CTF ­ Term 1  ­ Tuesday Mornings ­ Blocks 3&4 ­ Grade 7 to 9    Advanced Instrumentation (Music Rm #185) ­ Mrs. Gottenbos  Course Fee: $22 (for guest drumming specialist)  Do you want to further your performance skills on instruments such as the Orff instruments (xylophone, metallophone, contrabass,  glockenspiel), African Drums, and handbells?  Do you want to learn a stomp routine as a group?  In this class, we will learn to play more  complex pieces and to play as an ensemble. We may also find opportunity to attend concerts highlighting these instruments.    Basketball (Gym) – Mr. Mackay   Learn all about basketball.  Create and run drills.  Learn how to referee.  Better your skills as you learn how to share them with others. What  makes a good coach?  What makes a good referee?     Classroom Assistant     Students are assigned to different classes in the early years to work for the term. They may work one on one with a student or in a small  group.    Coding 101 (Rm 169) ­ Mr. Brown  Do you like Angry Birds? Minecraft? Discover how these games were created as students explore the basics behind simple computer coding  and how it shapes the technological world around us! This option will allow the students to explore, and create different aspects of  computational thinking, including coding their own animations and games! Requires a personal laptop or Chromebook  Fee: N/A    Film Study (Rm #164) ­ Miss Remillard & Miss St. Amand  This course is an exploration of film technique and film as a means of storytelling and communication. We will look at different genres of  film, actors and characterization; special effects and techniques; and critical analysis of films. Pending availability, we may also get a visit  from the TV and Film Production students at NAIT who will teach us about the basics of film production and the actual gear they use!  Students will explore the elements of effective filmmaking and gain an understanding of editorial writing techniques through viewing a  variety of films and writing movie reviews.      Follow the Leader (Rm #155) – Mrs. Arnold  Course Fee: $15  Are you a leader in disguise? Students will have the opportunity to plan one major activity, volunteer trip and fundraising event. You will  plan and organize events ranging from the School Talent Show, to Tie Dye T shirt fundraisers, to school dances. The events you plan will  reflect the needs of the school, community and/or globe.    Sports Exposure (Offsite) – Mr. Laevens & Mr. Rowse  Course Fee: $50  What sport do you want to explore?  Students will be given a chance to research a sport or activity that they are curious about.  A list of  activities such as billiards, bowling, gymnastics, broomball, water polo and other various sports and activities will be provided to the  students who will then research the rules and strategies related to that sport or activity.  Students will then share this information with  their peers by teaching portions of the game or activity.  Come join the fun and explore some different sports!       

CTF ­ Term 1  ­ Thursday Afternoons ­ Blocks 6&7 ­ Grade 6 to 9    Art (Art Rm #122) – Miss St. Amand   Course Fee: $15  In this option, you will have the opportunity to get your creative juices flowing.  We will learn about the different elements of art and how  to apply them to expand your creativity! You will use and explore a variety of mediums such as drawing, paint, and pastels to develop your  skills. You will choose some of your artwork to showcase within the school so others can see the artist in you, too!     

Athletic Leadership (Gym) – Mr. Laevens  What sport are you passionate about?  This course will enable students to explore a sport they love and share their knowledge with the  Muir Lake school community.  Students will be in leadership positions to connect with peers and younger students at school by teaching  skills, along with organizing practices and games.  Depending on the current sporting season, it is encouraged that students who are  passionate about a particular sport take this course during that season.  For example: an athlete who loves volleyball, may want to  participate in this course during the volleyball season, etc.  The focus will include but not limited to volleyball in term 1, basketball in term 2  and track & field in term 3.    Board Game Construction and Design (Rm #163) ­ Mr. Rowse  Do you have what it takes to design, construct and teach your own board game?   Have you ever wanted to design and construct your own board game?  Are you ready for a challenge?  In this course, students will explore, research, and play different board games. After becoming familiar with different board game rule  books, design and construction, you will start designing your own board game. Once you have completed a basic design, you will be  presented with a challenge where you will make your own rule book and construction of the board game itself.   Perseverance and  teamwork skills are a must!    Career Studies  (Rm #158) – Mr. Mackay   What do you want to do?  What do you need to be a doctor, mechanic, carpenter, teacher, nurse or astronaut?  Learn about possible  careers and opportunities in your future!    Classroom Assistant     Students are assigned to different classes in the early years to work for the term. They may work one on one with a student or in a small  group.    Drama Production and Movement  (Drama Rm #126) ­ Miss Remillard  Do you love the limelight and live for the applause? Then this is the class for you! We will explore different play and theatre forms, theatre  production, and developing our own characters. At the end of the semester, students will put all their skills to use by writing and  performing their own skit on a given theme.     Entrepreneurship (Rm #155) ­ Mrs. Arnold    Do you have an idea for the next great invention/product?  Are you a leader who sets clear goals?  Do you have a passion for creating  products that you love giving to or sharing with others?  If so, you would make a great entrepreneur.  In this class, we will be producing  products, designing logos, creating an advertising campaign and budgeting finances.  From there, the world is your oyster!    Foods (Kitchen) ­ Miss Saunders  Course fee: $50   In Foods, students will be learning basic kitchen safety and safe food handling practices through a practical, hands­on approach. Students  will work as part of a kitchen team to prepare a variety of delicious recipes that will allow them to understand cooking terms and recipe  organization, as well as develop familiarity with kitchen equipment. The goal is for students to apply the culinary skills they develop into  cooking at home with confidence, preparing healthy and tasty food from scratch, and continuing on to  further studies in Culinary Arts at the High School level and beyond!    Introduction to Guitar (Music Rm #185) ­ Mrs. Gadoury  Students will be introduced to the study of instrumental music as they learn standard chording on the guitar. The students will learn the  basic guitar chords.  Students will be provided the opportunity to participate in groups or solo. Areas of instruction will include instrument  care, techniques and fundamentals of musicianship, tone production, and proper posture.  Students will also complete a research project  on famous guitar players.      Learn to Sew (Sewing Rm #111) – Mrs. Gottenbos  Course Fee:  Cost of Supplies or $15 for package  In today’s world is there value in developing Home Economic skills? In this course you will develop the sewing skills that will help you in  career choices, in saving money, and in personalizing your clothing and other sewn products.  You will develop the skills of sewing, cutting,  ironing, and following project instructions by making an apron and matching potholder. This course is a prerequisite for any further sewing  courses, so learn the basics now!
