Career & Technology Foundation (CTF) Course Descriptions 2016­17    

CTF ­ Term 2  ­ Tuesday Mornings ­ Blocks 3&4 ­ Grade 7 to 9   

Advanced Sewing ­ Pillows (Sewing Rm #111) ­ Mrs. Gottenbos  Course Fee: Cost of supplies  Do you want to make a one of a kind pillow for yourself or as a gift?  Using the skills you learned in the introduction course, you will choose  a pattern and purchase materials for a quilted top pillow.  Through this project, you will learn the techniques used to make quilts and end  up with a useful and personalized piece.  It’s sew fun!  (Max 13 students)    Basketball (Gym) – Mr. Mackay   Learn all about basketball.  Create and run drills.  Learn how to referee.  Better your skills as you learn how to share them with others. What  makes a good coach?  What makes a good referee?     Classroom Assistant     Students are assigned to different classes in the early years to work for the term. They may work one on one with a student or in a small  group.    Film Study (Rm #164) ­ Miss Remillard & Miss St. Amand  This course is an exploration of film technique and film as a means of storytelling and communication. We will look at different genres of  film, actors and characterization; special effects and techniques; and critical analysis of films. Pending availability, we may also get a visit  from the TV and Film Production students at NAIT who will teach us about the basics of film production and the actual gear they use!  Students will explore the elements of effective filmmaking and gain an understanding of editorial writing techniques through viewing a  variety of films and writing movie reviews.      Follow the Leader (Rm #155) – Mrs. Arnold  Course Fee: $15  Are you a leader in disguise? Students will have the opportunity to plan one major activity, volunteer trip and fundraising event. You will  plan and organize events ranging from the School Talent Show, to Tie Dye T shirt fundraisers, to school dances. The events you plan will  reflect the needs of the school, community and/or globe.    Muir Lake News (Rm # 169) ­ Mr. Brown  Do you have the investigative spirit to become a news reporter? Get your feet wet in what it might feel like to be part of a news team!  Discover what it takes to create an effective news team, and create bi­weekly media releases to keep the Muir Lake team up to speed.    Sports Exposure (Offsite) – Mr. Laevens & Mr. Rowse  Course Fee: $50  What sport do you want to explore?  Students will be given a chance to research a sport or activity that they are curious about.  A list of  activities such as billiards, bowling, gymnastics, broomball, water polo and other various sports and activities will be provided to the  students who will then research the rules and strategies related to that sport or activity.  Students will then share this information with  their peers by teaching portions of the game or activity.  Come join the fun and explore some different sports! 

            CTF ­ Term 2  ­ Thursday Afternoons ­ Blocks 6&7 ­ Grade 6 to 9   

Art  (Rm #158) – Mr. Mackay   Course Fee: $15  This course is designed to allow students a chance to express their ideas and emotions through different mediums.  It is a project based  course that should allow all students a chance to experience success. Students will be pushed to exceed their own perceived limitations  within the boundaries of artistic expression.   The mediums of Watercolour, Pastel, Pencil, and Chalk will be explored.     

Athletic Leadership (Gym) – Mr. Laevens  What sport are you passionate about?  This course will enable students to explore a sport they love and share their knowledge with the  Muir Lake school community.  Students will be in leadership positions to connect with peers and younger students at school by teaching  skills, along with organizing practices and games.  Depending on the current sporting season, it is encouraged that students who are  passionate about a particular sport take this course during that season.  For example: an athlete who loves volleyball, may want to  participate in this course during the volleyball season, etc.  The focus will include but not limited to volleyball in term 1, basketball in term 2  and track & field in term 3.    Classroom Assistant     Students are assigned to different classes in the early years to work for the term. They may work one on one with a student or in a small  group.    Entrepreneurship (Rm #155) ­ Mrs. Arnold    Do you have an idea for the next great invention/product?  Are you a leader who sets clear goals?  Do you have a passion for creating  products that you love giving to or sharing with others?  If so, you would make a great entrepreneur.  In this class, we will be producing  products, designing logos, creating an advertising campaign and budgeting finances.  From there, the world is your oyster!    Foods (Kitchen) ­ Miss Saunders  Course fee: $50   In Foods, students will be learning basic kitchen safety and safe food handling practices through a practical, hands­on approach. Students  will work as part of a kitchen team to prepare a variety of delicious recipes that will allow them to understand cooking terms and recipe  organization, as well as develop familiarity with kitchen equipment. The goal is for students to apply the culinary skills they develop into  cooking at home with confidence, preparing healthy and tasty food from scratch, and continuing on to  further studies in Culinary Arts at the High School level and beyond!    Musical Theatre (Music Rm #185) – Mrs. Gottenbos, Miss Remillard  Course Fee: cost of costume  How can you tell a story using acting, singing and dance? This year’s performance will be an original script of Cinderella.  Be a part of the  cast and crew that will prepare for this production. We will need people to act, sing, dance, provide technical support, create backdrops,  props, and advertising for the play.  The performance will be in March and you must be prepared for a minimum of three after school  commitments for rehearsal and performance times.  Auditioned and non­auditioned parts will be available.  Auditions will be in November.    Outdoor Education (Outside) ­ Mrs. Gadoury  The Outdoor Education is a student­centered program designed to enhance the participant’s learning ability, self­confidence, and  self­discipline. The O.E. course is where individuals can challenge themselves mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and culturally. The  students will learn to utilize the outdoors as a classroom and incorporate many skills to live an active and healthy lifestyle.   If a student want to complete activities, and is willing to have proper attire for the weather that is outside then students should choose  this course.​    Students will be completing 3 modules in Outdoor Ed.  1.WILDERNESS NAVIGATION ­ Students develop the attitudes, skills,  and knowledge in wilderness navigation to enhance their outdoor experiences.   2.OUTDOOR COOKING THEORY ­ Students develop and  demonstrate safe and sanitary food handling procedures, equipment care, comprehension of recipes and an understanding of the  importance of efficient work habits in outdoor cooking environments.   3. OUTDOOR SURVIVAL SKILLS ­ Students develop and demonstrate  the attitudes, skills, and knowledge required for responsible participation in a range of outdoor activities.    Scrapbooking and Card Design (Rm #170 – Miss St. Amand   Course Fee: $20  In this option, you will have the opportunity to express and explore your creativity! In this basic introduction to card making and  scrapbooking, you will learn basic techniques such as use of colour, stamping, embossing, the use of embellishments, shapes, and a variety  of page layouts. You will be asked to bring in photographs to create a scrapbook page. We will fashion a variety of different custom cards  and learn how to promote your own products.  After creating and designing your own products, we will learn what it takes to run a small  business using your very own crafts!     World of Card Games (Rm #163) ​ Mr. Rowse  Ready to learn a new card game? Forget the rules to an old favorite? We will learn comprehensive rules for some of the world’s most  popular card games and then play against computers and have tournaments with other students. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or  the next rookie on deck, you will learn rules and tips you need to master any card game. Some of the card games we will learn are hearts,  cribbage, rummy, 31, spades, solitaire, etc.
