Welcome Back Letter

ESOL Student Interviews

by Nathaly Romero Welcome back students, staff, and newcomers. TGIF is the school newsletter, which comes out every Friday. It stands for “Thank Goodness It’s Friday”. Last year in our issues of TGIF we talked about what was going on in the school, our community, and we showcased talents of our students here at NOMS. Please know TGIF is a way for all students at staff to discuss topics that are important to them and express themselves. We are excited to see what you guys will contribute to TGIF this year!

by Evelyn Moreno What is your name? German De Jesus Revelo Hernandez Where are your from? El Salvador How long have you been living in the U.S? Two years How long have you been in Nicholas Orem? This is my second year at Nicholas Orem. What is your opinion on taking ESOL classes outside last year with being inside this year? I think it was a good idea. Last year I felt excluded from the school. Now that we are inside, I feel more comfortable because other students used to view me differently. Before, I felt discriminated against.

What did you do over the Summer? by Evelyn Moreno I had a great time during the summer! During the summer I went to the beach with my family I had a great time there because usually, every time that I go to the beach, I never get wet mostly because the water is really cold and I can't swi. But this time, my dad convinced me and I had a great time. Another thing that I did during the summer was that I went to the movie theater. The movie that I saw was “Finding Dory”. The movie was great. The movie had some exciting scenes, it also had some sentimental scenes. I enjoyed the movie and so did my family. I also went to the lake. I loved going to the lake because I can't swim and the lake isn't really deep compared to the beach. The last thing that I did during my summer was that I had cookouts with my family. This was really fun because I spent time with my family.I really enjoyed my summer vacation, it's one I'll never forget. Now it's time to work hard. Remember we “Mighty Falcons believe in our intelligence and stand on our character!”

Weekly teacher interview featuring Mr. Malave: by Evelyn Moreno Why did you pick Nicholas Orem out of any other school in the county? It’s a special school because it represents my culture. Also, I always dreamed of working with diverse students outside of my native country Puerto Rico. What subject do you teach and how long? I’ve taught for 12 years and the subject I teach is Social Studies. What do you like about the school? I like Ms. Martinez. I have excellent coworkers and I think that teachers have a great responsibility to change or transform students. What do you think about the students and staff? I think that this is a tight knit community and we will succeed because we’re working together for the same purpose. Do you think you can impact the students lives? Yes, because they will remember my advice, my lessons, and who I am as an individual.

What is your name? Lesly Caceres Where are your from? El Salvador How long have you been living in the U.S? Almost two years How long have you been in Nicholas Orem? This is my second year at Nicholas Orem. What is your opinion on taking ESOL classes outside last year with being inside this year? I think it was a good idea that the moved the ESOL students inside the school. Last year, I was always running from my outside classes to the classes inside the building. I was feeling bad and upset because being outside made me feel like we were left out. This year is better!! We are inside and they [students] treat us better. What is your name? Isela Raquel Belloso Where are your from? El Salvador How long have you been living in the U.S? Two years How long have you been in Nicholas Orem? This is my second year at Nicholas Orem. What is your opinion on taking ESOL classes outside last year with being inside this year? We feel much better to have class inside the building. Some students used to look down on us. They used to tell us that Hispanic people should not be in our school. When it was raining, our books, clothes, and materials got wet. We used to run to be on time for class. I feel happier that they fought for our rights. THANK YOU!

A moment in sports: by Leslie Hernandez and Giselle Vasquez What is softball? A modified form of baseball played on a smaller field with a larger ball, seven rather than nine innings, and underarm pitching. The game evolved during the late 19th century from a form of indoor baseball. Softball is the best! You can join the Lady Falcon softball team now. In softball the head coach is Ms.Brown. The team’s captain is Jasmelin Paz.
