Pennies for Patients Thea and Abby Help save a life one penny at a time. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is a non-profit organization that helps raise money for kids with leukemia, lymphoma, and blood cancer. With your help, the scientists can find out how to cure cancer. By donating to the Pennies for Patients fund, they can make money to go towards research and finding cures. On January 26, LLS came and talked to the students and staff of TRS about Pennies for Patients. During the presentation the spokesperson talked about how we can raise money to help fund their research and find a cure for cancer. Each homeroom received a collection box where loose change can be donated to benefit research opportunities. The homeroom that raises the most money will get an Olive Garden luncheon and earn extra points towards February Festival! The Pennies for Patients competition ends February 23, so go, go, go! Raise money for a good cause!

Exploring Real Life: Grade 7 Science How Slippery is Your Driveway?

Which Water Bottle Works the Best?

Abby and Thea

Abby and Thea

For seventh grade science the students had to predict which ice melt would melt the ice faster. They had a choice between three substances, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and sand. The fourth choice was to let the ice melt on it’s own. Each group of students had to figure out which ice melt melted the ice the fastest. If you are looking for an ice melt, we recommend using calcium chloride.

For science, the students had to make a container that would insulate a water bottle and keep it cold. They had to bring in materials like fiberglass, bubble wrap, styrofoam, aluminum foil, and other good insulators that the group found during their research. The groups have been building for a couple weeks but have been planning for over a month. We’ll see what groups will keep the water bottle cold.

A Project for the Ages Abby Eighth-grade science classes recently dove into the history of the earth. With a partner, students researched a period of time and put together a presentation. These projects were placed into one giant presentation per class to form a timeline of the earth. Starting with Precambrian Time (3,800 Million Years ago) and leading to the Cenozoic (starting 10,000 years ago and continuing through time). Presentations talked about the weather, animals, plants, and “monsters” of their time period. Each class is working to put together their own “timeline” project using the information from the presentations. Block 2 has decided to make a hallway timeline, where the events will be spread out in order around a hallway. Block 3 will be making a poster that will open in an accordion style timeline. Block 4 will be making a collection of books. Block 7 will make a pyramid with each side representing an era. Finally, Block 8 will make a timeline on the wall.

Ferry Beach 2018 The 6th graders of Three Rivers School go to Saco, Maine with their classmates for 4 days and 3 nights and spend days learning on site at The Ferry Beach Ecology School. Students leave the school early Tuesday morning April 17th and come back in the afternoon on Friday, April 20th. Throughout each day you are put into several groups with one or two counselors who lead you around to different learning areas. There is also plenty of time for students to socialize with their peers and building relationships during free time and meals. This trip is rain or shine so pack accordingly!

Ferry Beach FAQ’s If you have a question about the trip that is not answered below make sure to reach out to Mrs. Monterio, the Ferry Beach Coordinator. What are some experiences students learn? “They certainly learn about the environment and they get to have the experience of an overnight camp with a lot of their friends. They learn about how humans fit into the environment and how we affect things.” How many students are in a room? “It varies, from 3-6.”

Ferry Beach Classroom Preview The Marine Lab The Marine Lab lesson is an excellent lesson on its own, but especially meaningful prior to a visit to the Tide Pools. Students become acquainted with the feeding strategies and adaptations of intertidal organisms. They will learn where to find these animals in the cross section of the rocky shore and how to handle them safely. Throughout the lesson, students visit several stations where they get to examine and learn about live specimens.

What are some of the lessons they have? “They’ll learn about different animal species and the ecosystem. The beach environment and soil, habitats, seashore ecology, echolocation.” What are some of the activities do they do? “Well they do a lot of camp like activities, singing songs they are nighttime lessons that have a lot to do with sound and senses. Digging at the beach, testing the soil, scavenger hunt. Team building exercises.” What time do students leave school Tuesday morning? “Around 8 am.” What time do students come back on Friday? “Around 1 o’clock.”

The D.C. Trip: A Right of Passage Just about every student at TRS look forward to the famous D.C. trip in the Spring of their eighth grade year. But everyone has question!s The trip coordinator, Mrs.Potter, answered them!

Page 5

February 14, 2018

Do students get to pick who they room with? “Yes, as long as they fit within the idea of four, if we have two groups of two students will be put together. If students don’t choose they will get assigned.”

By Abby and Emma Why does the eighth grade go on this trip? “Well I think part of it is too expose students to as much history as possible, and we live on the east coast so we can get there. It’s a right of passage for eighth graders all over the state. Plus a lot of the social studies curriculum is based on U.S history.” What do you like about the D.C trip? “I think what I really enjoy is seeing students outside of the traditional classroom, we learn a lot about each other. I also love the Spy Museum. It has a mix of hollywood props from spy movies and historical artifacts, and we’re trying to get a dinner at Medieval Times. If we do that, that will be fun.”

Recipe of the Month: (Brought to you by the TRS Cooking Club)

Are the students going to visit any different places this year than last? “If we get Medieval Times, that will be different, we haven’t set the rest of the itinerary. We’re hoping to go to this new national park just outside of Baltimore that’s based on the locations of Harriet Tubman and her experiences.” When is the trip? April 17th-April 20th, right before vacation. Any tips for what to pack? “Comfortable shoes, cause we will be walking around a lot, there will be a suggested packing list.” Stay tuned for more Q&A’s with Mrs. Potter in the next issue.

TRS Panthers Basketball Teams Continue to Roll! The TRS boys and girls basketball teams have recently ended regular season play and are both headed to the postseason. The boys finished the regular season at 12-0 out scoring their competition by near 30 points per game. They look to continue their hot streak on their quest for a league championship. Our Lady Panthers have also been on a hot streak going 10-2 during the regular season. This record was earned through tenacious defense and outscoring their opponents by 22 points a game over the course of the regular season. The girls are looking to battle their way into the finals in hopes of a rematch against the Deerfield Dragons with plans to avenge their two regular season losses. Good luck to both teams in the playoffs!!!

Super Bowl LII Eagle vs Patriots Super Bowl 52 was held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots fought hard against the high flying Eagles offense but, it wasn't enough to beat the Eagles. The Eagles were very prepared for the big game and even used various plays from the Patriots playbook. The final score of the game was 41-33 Eagles. Lots of fans were left wondering why did Malcolm Butler did not start or play in the Super Bowl? Bill Belichick didn’t say why. The decision was unexpected considering Butler played 97.8% of the snaps all season. Eric Rowe played instead of Butler and it might not have been the best decision for the Pats. Eric Rowe had trouble facing the nifty Eagles receivers. He was playing Alshon Jeffery early in the game and then Nelson Agholor towards the end of the game, Jeffery and Agholor were open in key points of the game and maybe if Butler played there may have been a difference in the game. The Greatest Showman Review 1: I give this movie 4 and ½ stars. This movie has a great soundtrack, and a great message. If you have a little sibling, they may not understand the concept of the movie. There are many abnormal things such as a three legged man. I would definitely recommend this movie to anybody who loves big productions.

Why is Homework Important? What about homework? Why do we need it? What’s the point of homework? Many people have different opinions about homework today at school. Is there too much homework? Is there too little? This article will share some insights into the benefits and drawbacks of homework and I will offer up my opinion. Why do teachers give us homework? Homework helps by practicing and studying math, spelling words, and other concepts that are covered in class.. Homework provides students a built-in assignment to learn, reinforce, and study material from our classes. Imagine you have a test tomorrow, and you forgot to study, but you have done all of your homework, you have a better chance to do well on the test. Besides studying, work outside of class will impact your report card grades so you should strive to complete it every day. Having assignments to complete outside of school also offers a good lesson about managing

Review 2: This movie deserves 5/5 stars! It is a great spectacle for all, although there were some intense scenes. The story follows P.T. Barnum, the creator of the circus. It is a great way for all to learn about the history of one of America’s finest ideas. There’s a bit of something for all between the love story, action, music and dance. It features actors Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron, and actresses, Zendaya and Michelle Williams.

your time. As you can see homework can help in many ways. Sometimes homework can be frustrating, homework might not help because it might be too hard or take too much time. This can cause stress if you are trying to squeeze lots of activities or want to do other things with your time. That is why homework doesn’t help, besides, you can just do work in class like we always do. In my opinion, kids should not have homework, I will, of course, do it because I am expected to, but I wish my time at home was free.

COME JOIN US!!! Do you want to possibly be a mechanical engineer? Well, you’re in luck! TRS has a second session of robotics that needs new recruits! In robotics, you and a few team members would build a robot to compete with. All the materials are supplied, and you’d need to program the robot yourself too! The competition changes every year, so I’d suggest you modify the original design to fit the competition. Good luck! - Grace
