School Directors' Report, Thirteen schools have been sustained by the town district for a period of 28 weeks each. Two hundred and thirty-nine different pupils have been enrolled. The average attendance has been 91 per cent, of what it should have been. Harlow school ranks first, 97 ; Gjuldsville schools and South Northfield, 96; East, 92 : Rabbit Hollow, 91 ; East Hill, Holton and West Hill, 90; Center and South East, 89; No. 10, 86; Little Northfield, 82. Total for the year, 45 Of the above deaths 2 were 90 years old and upwards, 6 were between 80 and 90, 9 were between 70 and 80 and 4 were between 50 and 60. i o children have died, 7 of them from I day to 8 months old, 3 from 3 to 14 years and the balance from 14 to 50 years of age. Two cases of Typhoid fever have been reported, no deaths. 2 cases Measles, no deaths. 4 cases Scarlet fever, no deaths. No cases of Diphtheria have been reported during the year. Number of deaths in 1899, 60; number in 1900, 59; number in 1901, 45 or 25 per cent less than in the two preceeding years. The sanitary condition of the four villages has naturally improved within the past few years until at the present time it is in a very satisfactory condition considering the great lack of sewers which the village afford. SCHOOLHOUSES.

In compliance with the State law in relation to inspection of school houses, the Health Officer in connection with Selectman George S. Averill, one of the board of Health, in August last, made an inspection of all the School buildings now in use throughout the town. We found them nearly all in a fair sanitary condition, several of them are nearly new, others lately repaired and are models of neatness, others are in quite good condition but very small in size. The one at the Harlow district is somewhat out of repair and a new one is needed in its place or the old one thoroughly repaired. S. H. KENT, Health Officer. Northfield, Feb. 8th, 1902.

During the past year the work of the Library has been as encouraging as in any former year. Indeed it seems to us to have increased in efficiency and usefulness. Our aim has been to add to it as many of the best books as our means would allow. In doing this we have endeavored to gratify the wishes of the patrons so tar as possible. Valuable books are continually called for which are essential to a well stocked Library, which we should be glad to secure were the means at our disposal. One enthusiastic patron of the Library, a tax payer, said, "1 wish the town would make a special appropriation for the purchase of standard works which are in constant demand, and which would make an invaluable addition. It would add but a trifleto the taxes each one now pays." CIRCULATION.

It is supplied with some of the best current periodical literature and is doing a beneficient work. Many appreciating its worth make a wise use of its privileges and are greatly bene fitted thereby. But we are sorry to be obliged to add, that there are those who make it too much a place of resort for visiting, loud talking and laughing, which disturbs those who are there for reading and study. In addition to this disturbance they are not careful in handling the periodicals some of which show rough treatment. Now this must be stopped or the design of the Reading Room will be defeated.

This noise and confusion must give place to quiet and dignified behaviour. We have not the means to provide a constant attendant which would obviate this trouble, but must trust to the honesty and courteous bearing of those who avail themselves of the advantages of the Reading Room. Here is seen our need of a Library Building •that the Library and Reading Room may be under the same roof and the care of one attendant. Each needs the help of the other and when brought together as they should be, each will realize more fully the high ideal for which it is established. An eminent instructor in speaking of the importance of a well furnished Library in every community says, "There is scarcely a village in the older settlements from which some citizens has gone forth who has a fortune more or jess ample. If he would be honorably remembered among the scenes of his childhood and youth he can accomplish his desire in no way so usefully as by erecting a simple fire proof building and founding a village library." The room now occupied by the Library is over crowded and some change must soon be made to meet its increasing demands. It is our earnest desire that this may be clone bv a building devoted to the purpose. Who will honor himself and immortalize his name by generously remembering the town in its present need? W. W.
