Tzouanakis Intermediate School At-A-Glance Tzouanakis Intermediate (TZ) is forever moving forward. TZ ‘s building (former Northeast Elementary) was built in 1964 and underwent a full-scale renovation in 1990. Tzouanakis Intermediate School was established in 1991 with Susan O’Brien as the school’s first principal. The school’s name was chosen to honor former long time Northeast principal, Mike Tzouanakis. Students had previously attended Ridpath, Jones, and Northeast Elementaries. Tzouanakis serves approximately all of the 450 3rd - 5th graders in the Greencastle School District. The Tzouanakis faculty and staff have targeted verbal and written communication skills, computation and problem solving skills, and citizenship as areas for school improvement. Tzouanakis Intermediate School has been an AdvancED certified school since 1995 and has improved to the level of grade A by the Indiana Department of Education for the 2012 ISTEP+ results. Tzouanakis uses the NWEA MAP tests to track student growth in addition to other standardized tests. Tzouanakis faculty provides students with a complete range of services including: P.E., art, music, speech therapy, counseling, media activities, ESL instruction, response to instruction, and special education support.

Blazing Trails at Tzouanakis with the Literacy Framework Tzouanakis Intermediate applied state mandated changes for the instruction of reading that became Indiana law in 2011. Many schools throughout the state continue to struggle to design and put in place professional development to meet these requirements of the state initiative. We are fortunate at TZ because the Literacy Framework that has been in place at Deer Meadow and Ridpath for the past six years meets and exceeds all state criteria for the new Indiana Reading Framework. Please know that TZ students are all very familiar with the Literacy Framework so it isn’t anything new for our intermediate students. According to the Indiana Reading Framework, reading instruction covers a 90 minute (uninterrupted) time frame consisting of a 20 to 30 minute mini-lesson and 60 minutes of literacy stations. During the station time, teachers meet with Guided Reading Groups. These are small groups (3 to 6) of students who read at similar levels and/or need help with similar reading issues. Literacy stations evolve from the teacher’s direct instruction, based on core curriculum and state reading standards. Tzouanakis teachers and staff continue to be trained and coached in the framework curriculum.
