21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Liturgy of the Week August 21, 2016 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time TODAY’S READINGS First Reading -- Brothers and sisters of every race and language will be brought to Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21). Psalm -- Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading -- Be strong and endure your trials as the "discipline" of a loving God, for it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13). Gospel -- People from east and west, north and south, recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30).

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY Sunday, August 28th: Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Ps 68:4-7, 10-11; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a; Lk 14:1, 7-14

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday, August 21st: Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday, August 22nd: The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary Tuesday, August 23rd: St. Rose of Lima Wednesday, August 24th: St. Bartholomew Thursday, August 25th: St. Louis of France; St. Joseph Calasanz Saturday, August 27th: St. Monica

Don't you love it when the underdog wins? When the Cardinals beat the Yankees for the championship or the Blues beat the Redwings, or the Rams beat anyone? Even when I watch a game with no St. Louis teams playing, I still like to root for the underdog. That is what I like about today's Gospel: the last will be first and the first will be last. Some say that Jesus was referring to the Jews, God's chosen people, whom Jesus called first to be his disciples. When they rejected him, the call went out to the Gentiles, who became followers. Or perhaps in Jesus' time, he was talking about the leaders of the Jews, the scribes and Pharisees. These refused to follow Jesus, while ordinary Jews who did not feel threatened by Jesus' teaching became disciples. In a way, you can understand why the leaders rejected Jesus. They made a nice living out of the offerings made by ordinary Jews. As long as they could decide who could enter the temple, they had a nice income flow. They were smart enough to include the poor, by asking them for smaller offerings. And who could argue with them? They worked for God. How dare Jesus say that they would be cast out, while people from the rest of the world would enter the Kingdom of God! And how about us? Remember that the Gospel was not written for non-believers. Are we threatened by Jesus' message? Just as the scribes and Pharisees considered themselves important in God's eyes because of their office, do we consider ourselves "saved" because we call ourselves Christians? Do we respect all people, or just the ones we like? Are we generous to the poor, or just to our friends? Do we give good example to the people we work with? Do we follow our conscience or do we follow the crowd? Entry into the Kingdom of God is not a fashion statement. We don't get there by looking good. We are invited by Jesus to be last on earth so we can be first in the Kingdom. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

All who undertake to teach must be endowed with deep love, the greatest patience, and, most of all, profound humility. The Lord will find them worthy to become fellow workers with him in the cause of truth. --St. Joseph Calasanz

Family Movie Night—-NEXT FRIDAY! Mark your calendar and make plans to enjoy an evening of fun on the Corpus Christi lawn on Friday, August 26. Bring the whole family along with blankets, beach chairs, a picnic dinner, snacks, and anything else to help you have a great time. Lemonade, popcorn and water will be provided at no cost. At 8:00 PM, the big screen will come alive with the Disney/Pixar favorite “Up.”

The Bethlehem Christian Families (The Holy Land) Religious Articles Sales On August 27/28, 2016, the Bethlehem Christian Families will be here to sell their hand carved religious articles made of olive wood before and after all Masses. The sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mission which is to maintain the roots and the existence of the Christian Families who are struggling to remain in Bethlehem. At least Ninety percent of the funds raised through these sales go directly to Christians living in the Bethlehem area. The proceeds will create more work which will help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land since they have no other source of income and are dependent on the olive wood industry. Thank you for your support and generosity.” SOUTH COUNTY OUTREACH FOOD & TOILETRY COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND *Rice · *Peanut Butter · *Jelly · Soup · Canned Beans *Cereal · Juice · Pasta · Pasta Sauce · Top Ramen Macaroni & Cheese · Chili · Ravioli · Tuna · *Canned Fruit Other items needed: Shaving Cream, disposable razors, shampoo, body soap, hair conditioner, feminine supplies, Lotion, baby & toddler food, Dog & Cat food, laundry detergent A cash donation of $20 turns into roughly $200 worth of food through our sources. In turn we are able to purchase what is empty from our shelves and be diligent in our desire to provide more nutritional foods.

Through Food Pantry Assistance, Susan’s family did not go hungry. The program made it possible for her to finish school and achieve a brighter future. Susan is a single mother that has utilized the Food Pantry to help her small family through the last 6 months. Last Thursday, she told her favorite volunteer why it would be her last month visiting the pantry. Susan had attended school full time and after many hard nights of balancing family and school work, she graduated. She will begin her nursing career at a local hospital, next week.

Your food and cash donations make a difference!

The Catholic Bible Institute (CBI) invites you to deepen your relationship with God through the study of the Sacred Scriptures. Applications are now being accepted for the next cohort of CBI, which will run from Fall 2016 to Spring 2019. Sessions take place one Saturday each month, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning with an orientation session on August 20, 2016. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.
