Promoting Student Success and Guided Pathways
Discussion:
Futures Institute gave a presentation to the group with an emphasis on ways to improve graduation rates at ACC. They also distributed a suggestion form to the group. Hays CISD Superintendent, Michael McKie suggested there should be more communication with the school district, community, and ACC regarding future plans. Rachel Ruiz and George Reyes went into detail about the degree map to assist students with planning their goals at ACC. Rachel also emphasized the addition of the EDUC 1300 class to assist students with finding a major and career planning. The group also discussed the different types of students: traditional, transfer, non-traditional and part-time; the different needs of these students and the challenges they face when entering ACC. Michael McKie also asked if ACC can track students based on whether they are taking one class or if they are full-time. It was suggested that an Open House event would be beneficial to those students wanting to learn more about ACC, but are hesitant to actually visit a college campus to ask for information. The application process can be a challenge for many students and it there was a discussion about the need to streamline this process. It was noted that when the process becomes too complicated and challenging for a student, they give up on trying to register at ACC and we lose them. Another, suggestion made about blocking students from accidentally registering for classes at multiple campuses when there is not enough travel time to make the trip to the second campus.
