In 1873, 75 years ago, Shoal Creek Baptist Association met with this (New Hope) church for its 3rd annual meeting. That was 11 years before Barry Co. Ass'n was organized. It was then an Ass'nof33churches with a total membership of 1900. It comprised the same territory that both Ass'ns now comprise. Rev. T. L. Largen in his history of Shoal Creek makes brief reference to the organization of Barry County by saying: "Some of the noble brethern who stood by the work and helped to make it a success are such men as Elders J . C. Sellers, P .H.Hodge, J.K.Northcutt, J.D. Chappell, J .C .Sills, J.A.Swiger, J. T . Bmttin,LeviAllen,C.M.Smith; and, Deacons Kelley Higgs, W.W.Montgomery Dc. R . B. Gladden , Marsh Carlin, and others whose names we cannot recall. We are now assembled for the 65th annual session of Barry County Ass'n, and meeting with this church for the fourth time. With a keen sense of inahility I come to the chair as the a3sociation's sixth moderator. To follow in the train of J. (:. SeJlers, J. A. Swiger, J . T. Brattin, C. M. Smith and Chas. Vanzandt, who have presided so successfully, fiJls me with trembling and fear. I can only look to God for divine guidance, and to the' messenger" and pastors of this body for sympathetic cooperation as we seek to go forward and make progress as these times demand of us. Only as we "seek" and "follow" th e directions of the Holy Spirit can we expect to progress. As yo;}r presiding officer (and you are responsible for placing this duty upon me I I shall try to be fair and impartial. because I consi, ler each member of this body to have equal rights ::nd privileges in the sessions before us. So to the best of my ability and judgement I shall endeavor to preside. I sincerely desire to see our Association make progress the coming year in two things especially: l'irst. Broaden , deepen and strengthen the good fellowship already existing among our pastors, churches and fellow memb~rs To do this let us cherish LOVE for each other. Let us not cease t~ PitA Y 10r cne another. Let us seek U_'lDEl{STANDING before we ma~:e cicci"ivns , Sit ill t:,e other fellow 's place long enoug~ t.o know his attitudes and spirit beiore offering criticism. " Let there be no strife, 1 pray thee, between me anJ t hee, and betwee:l m y herrhmen and your herdsmen, for we bl" brctbern.'" S(>cond. I long to see each 'and every person in the fellowship of our Ass'n have an enlarged vision of, and a deep inner urge to make definite progress in l\lissions and Evangelism. A ___ An enlaraed J)i!iOtrict V1is!iOions J·rollram. By t his I mean a more intensive aI"!n extensive effort to make aU ou , SU I!d:t ~.' :';ch oo ls, Trai nin g U nion~ . W M.U.s and Brot h e r~

hoods do more efficien t service. Added t o this I desire t o see every pa.'lto!" a nd church "making" and U Adopting" a nd "bailding" a flJlanciai program so as t o enable constru ctive progreS:i. Furthe l'more, [ think we need to enlarge our program so as to rear.h more desti t ute and sc hool ho use communitie:-; wi t;h the gospel. We have some men among u s who have announced th ~ ir call to preach, bLlt have no churches to preach to ; can we not help theIl) to go into the~e places by offering a li ttle financial aid? Seems to me this would be a mighty fine way for our Association to extend a "gospel hand" to many unsaved and unchurched people. Really I hope to see our Executive Board, Missionary and Brotherhoods set this in motmn. B __ .. An enlarJ1ed "out of our Association" l\fil'isionl'i pro~rafD. I hope to see EVERY chureh and pastor with love and prayer, keeping "lock step" with the Baptist Gen eral Association of Mo., and the Southern Baptist Convention in the great forw31'd move to give the gospel to the world. That 17 million doUar campaign in the making by Southern Baptistj that 1 million dollar campaign by Mo . Bap:tists is something that We should strive to make 100% success. What a challengp! What an opportunity! WE XEED the presen ce of .Jesus, and our guarantee of His presence is, "Go into all the world and prea ch thp. ~osp e l to every creat ure." 1\0 people in all the worJd h ave a better opportunity than we who are " wol'king together with the great host of Southern BaptL<:its, in Campaigns now open to _ u ~._ " _ As_ _ __ _ _t he rea t M hsion a ry enterpriRes and the great "" .... We, your Exerutive Board, on District Missions, beg to submit the following report : During the past twelve months an Associational Missionary has been employed full time, and we feel that much and lasting goorl has been accomplished in Barry County by our faithful Missionary. In addition to his regular work of conducting revival meetings and study courses throughout the County, attending Workers Councils, attending committee meetings, conducting funerals, supplying for other pastors and doing the many other things that are expecteo of our Associational Missionary; our Mis15ionary this year has promoted and made possible the ftrst Missionary Revival ever conducted in our county. lJuring this five day Missionary Revival, ten churches in our county and ten mission1" aries were cooperating in a great way to bring first. hand information to Barry County about actual missionary work that is being done by our denomination on the various mi~ sion fields. We feel that our missionary, Brother Richardson, is to be commended for his careful planning, great eft"orts and presisten t work in 'making possible this, our first and successful Missionary Revival in our Association. During the coming Associational year we recommend a doser cooperation between the churches and pastors of Barry County in bringing about liberal support of our District Mil>sion work in our Association and we also believe that the great work of our Cooperative Program should be constantly brought before our people, which program makes possible our great world-wide Missionary work. Respectfully submitted, W. C . Chpnoweth A. S. Carlin .T. D. Blalack Executive Board.

Report on Temperance read by P. W. Bryan. THE REPORT \Ve find that the liquor business is still thriving in our countf'y despite the fact that we have temperance reports and adopt resoll1tions every year on this business which is carried on by the Devil's agents. According to J. Edgar Hoover, the cost of crime to our nation is 15 Billion Dollars per year, and figures released by Mr. Kolb, hp-ad of the re!;earch department show that nearly 46 per cent of all crime is due to liquor, the appalling sum of which is $13,675.000.000.00 ALCOHOL ['ILLS ORPHANS' HOMES. Superintendent R. F. Hugh. Baptist Orphanage of Virginia, report'> that the institution's records show that 97 per cent of all applications received during the year July 1946 to July 1947 1 had liquor problems . connected with the home. , Surely every Baptist and TRUE CHRISTIAN will vote against and use all the influence possible against this traffic of the Dp-vil which is so injurious to all. We recommend total abstainance as the best weapon again st this awful curse for when there are no dram drinkers there will be no new drunkards added to the li;t of potential criminals. Respectfully submitted, P. W. Bryan

Report on Christian Education read by Homer Ivy. Motion and second . to adopt the Report. The basic aim of Christian Colleges is to provide for the N>ntmuous development of well-rounded Christian personalities who are to become leaders in the cause of Christ. This aim is in harmony with the example of Jesus. Jesus devoted much of His time to the training of the twelve disciples for Christian leadership. In the Great Commission He stated, "Go ye therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them . . . . and TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS." We suggest the following recommendations: (1) That Baptist young people be encouraged to attend our Baptist schools. (2) That we increase thf' financial support which we give our Baptist schools. (3) That Christian Education Day be observed in June in all our churches in order to better inform our people about the work of our Baptist schools.

Report on Home for Aged Baptists read by R. W. McCoy. THE REPORT We are happy in the fact t.hat we have been able to serve our aged Brothers and Sisters in Christ another year in their helpless old age. During the year we have cared for 82 different individuals averaging 70 each day. We have not been able to care for all who have made application. In fact, wP. always have quite a waiting list . Patien ts are received on church application only. Churches should not make application for anyone who is not dependent upon the church or on charity for support. There are no restrictions as to the patient's physical condition, ' but none under sixty years of age. About one-thi rd of Our patient.'i are helpless bed and wheel chair patients. Many have to be feed and cared for just like helpl ess babies. There are no charges for their keep in the home; bu t there must he a fund supplied by the church or otherwise for the burial expense. Everyone t:;oming to the home must turn over to the home any property which they may possess. The churches throughout the state have been very thoughtful and kind to send in canned fruit and vegetables. \,,' e received 128 harrel~ during the year which means about. 9000 quarts of fruit and vegetablf"s. We humbly thank God for His wonderful goodness and blp.ssings on the work during the past year. We covet continued interest in your prayers.
