OU R CHURCH COVENANT

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive t he Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptised in t he name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Ghost . we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly 2nd joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one bod y in Christ. We engage therefore, by the aid of t he Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love ; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality ; to sustain its worship. ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contrlbu! e cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry .the pxpell8es of the Church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Go'pel through all nations. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children: to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances: to walk circumspectly in the world: to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment: to avoid all tattling, backbiting and excessive anger: to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drink as a beverage, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Saviour. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love, to remember each other in prayer, to aid each other in sickness and dis' tress, to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courteey in speech, to be slow to take offense but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of nur Saviour, to secure it without delay. We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church of like faith, where we can ""rry out the snirit of this covenant and the principles of God'sWord .

Report on Christian Education

We believe that Christian E ducation is t he only complete education. The broadest educati on is the education that relates one to his environment. Only Christian Educati on can do this. We are grateful for our Christian colleges in Missouri and for the fine contribution t hey are making to the life of our nat ion. Repor ts from our two junior colle6es,Hannibal-LaGrange and Southwest Baptist College, and from the Senior college, William Jewell, are very encouraging. The total enrollment of Southwest Baptist College for 1952-3 was 706 students. There were 137 graduates and two academy graduates for the year. There were 124 ministerial students and 88 others who were preparing for full-time Christian service. The new Library and Science building is completed and fully equipped and will be used for the first time this fall. Hannibal-LaGrange enrolled a total of 260 students for the year ending July 17, 1953. A total of 51 received diplomas during the year. There were 44 ministerial students and 17 Mission volunteers. We now have Chairs of Bible wi th capable teachers doing a good work in the following cities: Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Springfield and Warrensburg. We solicit the hearty response and active participation of all Southern Baptists in t his effort to achieve a new level of personal interest in Baptist young people everywhere. These boys and girls of today, men and women of tomorrow, constitute the richest vein of precious ore in Gcd's great kingdom. Let us turn to t hem with deeper interest, greater understanding, more helpful counsel, and unselfish devotion . J. E. Presley, Chairman Committee of Christian Education R"port on Sunday Schools

Report ,of Associational Missions Report given by C. F. Siler Motion carried to adopt the report. Report Adopted. To properly evaluate progre~s one must not take a fragmentary look, but look at the work as a whole. Looking at the progress made covering a period of twenty years one sees marvelous changes that speak for progress in our Association. We believe that our District Mission Program has been a great factor in this accomplishment. Evaluation r('vealing progress ought to be an incentive to a larger and lTlore thorough liistrict 1\lission Program.

Tn this year when our great Denomination is putting forth such strenuous effort to reach and enroll a million people in our Sunday Schools; when the cry from ail our boards is for enlargement and advance, surely we will want to do greater things for Our Lord. We have our proportion of lost and unchurched right at our doors. The terribleneed of los.; and indifferent people should pull at our hearts.·and challenge us to greater undertakings. . Therefore, we ought to heartily adopt the Financial Budget adopted by the Ex· ecutive Board and then every pastor and church go back home to lay on the hearts of ALL our members to come to the help of the Lord as He ~eeks to ~ave people from their sins. Recommendations: 1. Wp recommend the election of an Evangelistic Chairman and an Organizer who will be responsible for planning another SimultaneousEvangejisticCampaign next year and encourage Evangelism in all the churches. 2. We also recommend that ALL pastors and churches lend every encouragement and help possible to ALL associationalleaders, such as Sunday School, Training Union, Brotherhood and W. M. U. Associational officers and leaders. 3. We further recommend that prayerful, sympathetic cooperative support be given to our Missionary and wife, as they pray, plan and seek to lead us on to even grea t~1' progress and achievements. . Finally, let us be mindful of each other in daily prayers, seeking for symt:athetic understandings, loving cooperation in all the things that our Lord has commis. . Report on Religious Literature

Report read by A. H . Bennett Talked on by A. H. Bennett, Fred McPhail, Report Adopted Chas. Vanzandt and Loren Henson. Missouri Baptists have been publishing t he Word and Way as their own state religious journal since January 1, 1946. In the last 7! years the circulation of the paper has b~en increased from 17,000 to the present 39,774. The urgent need now is for the furt her extension of the circulaton of the paper. The 22 state Baptist papers in the Southern Baptist Convention are presently engaged in an effort to raise the total circulation from the present l,OOO,OUO to 1,200,000 by the time the Southern Baptist Convention meets in St. Louis next year. This is an increase of approximately 20% over the present figures. For the Word and Way that means an increase of8,000, bringing the total circulation up to 48,000. More of our Baptist churches are urged to use the Church Budget Plan---or some means to provide more of our Baptist People wit h religious literature. In Missouri more than 500 churches are using t he BudgetPlan which means there are more than 1200 churches not helping themselves with the use of the state paper. A. H. Bennett Temperance Report

Given by W. P. Richardson. Discussed by W. P. Richardson, O. V. Dodson, Chas. Vanzandt and Loren Henson. Report Adopted. If there are influences in our communities that tend to corrupt our youth or those who are morally weak. we must work together through our churches to improve those conditions. Also, as individuals, we sHould desire to seize every opportunity to bear ' a positive Christian testimony. No Christian shoul.d be timid abou t expressing himself on great social and moral issues. Rather, he should let his influence be felt in every way : through his business, his home, the clubs to which he belongs, and among his personal friends. We believe it is true people drink because things are all wrong inside. A society which pursues nothing but pleasure and never find s it is a sick society. When people become slaves to pleasure, drink and other passions, they are sick. Our cherches need to mini ster to this sickness. Happy people do not drink, commit crimes or seek thrill s in moral wrong. Your committee would suggest: that each church in Missouri plan a week of study concerning alcoholism, ' marriage and family life, industrial and racial relations, narcotics or some related subject. It would be well worth the time and money to invite a competent person either minister or layman, to come and conduct this week of study on the same basis as an evangelist is invited to conduct a revival meeting. In addition,we would go on record as commending the efforts of law enforcement officers in trying to stamp out hot rod and drunken driving and in promoting general safety on the highways. Harry Moore.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE Scripture: Rev. 2: 1-5. Subject: Indictment of the Church Speaker: Fred McPhail, Pastor First Church, Aurora, Mo. The church does not stand before God indicted today, but is just as powerful and just as pure as it was when Christ instituted the church. It is the members of the church that are indicted and stand before God not only indicted but guilty. Another jolt. to our complacency. Congregation standing, song, "Oh, How I Love Jesus." Baptist Foundation

Time was given for Fred McPhail to speak on this vital subject. Motion carried to adopt the Report read by Fred McPhail and that it be included in the minutes of the meeting. The Missouri Baptist Foundation, incorporated August 15, 1946. is the official organization of the Missouri Baptist General Association for securing and handling endorsements, annuities, wills and gifts for any Baptist institution, agency or cause under the .upervision of or supported by the Missouri Baptist General As~ociation. The Foundation is a service organization and exists not for itself, but to help Baptists strengthen our institutions, agencies and causes to the end that the Gospel of Jesus may be effectively spread to the ends of the earth. Your Foundation has more than doubled its assets during the past two years. We are justly proud of the nine consecrated Baptist business mP.n that make up the Board of Trustees. The members of this Board are nominated and elected by the Missouri Baptist General Association with three members being elected each year. These men after serious consideration and competent investment council carefully invest the funds which you have provided that Missouri Baptists can be strong. A complete audit of the books of the Foundation is to be found in the Minutes of the Missouri BaptistGeneral Association each year. The possibilities of the Missouri Baptist.Foundation are far greater than many of our people realize. Our preachers should preach on the responsibility of our people relative to their wealth, not only while they live but after they are gone. It is a glorious Christian privilege to put a portion of that money in the Foundation while living to work in Baptist education, in the ministry of healing, in homes for children and the aged, in missions or otherwise and to remember these causes in one's will when life is over. Report on Brotherhood Work

Report given by A. W. Keeling

Report adopted

Only two states in the Southern Baptist Convention have more Brotherhoods than Missouri We now have844 Brotherhoods and 79 associational organizations. The main function of the Brotherhood is to help in the overall church program. The four major emphasis for this year are: Evangelism; Stewardship;Cooperative Program and Boys Work. During the yf'ar thp,re have been 64 Laymen-sponsored Revivals, 14 boys reached through the "Man and Boy Movement," 4 associational Brotherhood Clinics, 13 new church Brotherhoods in Missouri. In Barry County there are 29 Missionary Baptist Churches. Eleven of'"these have Brotherhood organizations. On ivIonday night, June 8th, W. H. Allison, State Brotherhood Secretary, delivered an inspirational message to a county-wide Brotherhood meeting in the Cassville church. In view of the challenge of enlisting more of the great host of unenlistedBaptist men and because of the important place the Brotherhood is filling in Baptist activities, we recommend the following: '" 1. A full corps of Brotherhood officers in EVERY church and in EVERY association. 2. Renewed emphasis on the "Man and Boy Movement." 3. Definite, well-planned church activitiEs. 4. Brotherhood sponsorship of new mission stations. 5. A Stewardship Committee in every church. 6. Brotherhood sponsorship of Stewardship Revivals on both church and associational levels. 7. A School of Stewardship in every ch urch, October 18-25, 1953. 8. An increase for the Cooperative Program of at least five per cent (6%) of the' total budget. 9. For the associational organization: a. A Brotherhood in every church. b. A Brotherhood and Stewardship Clinic dudng the year. c. A Stewardship Committee in each association. d. A Stewardship Rally in September. A. W: Kee]jri~.

The Lord has again blessed the great work of our Childrens' Home. The Home was established more than 67 years ago and has continued to grow. The purchase of a 40-ac!"e farm near the Home was made. Freosh fruits and vcgetableR also some meat and eggs from the farm help with the food budget. The farm home is large enough for five boys along with the farmer and his wif~. The new nUfsery home, for 24 pre-school age children and 4 teen-age girls in now in operation. During the past year 20 inCants and 10 older children were placed in adoptive homes. 'fhe Home is now able to care for 145 children. Also there are 125 children in foster homes under supervision of the Home. Total number under care of the Horne June 30,1953 was 255. lhe number helped during the year,322. The capacity of the Home has almost doubled the past nine years, but this is not true oC the annua) income. Offerings have increased but not as fast as the family ha:; grown. The past year the Home has just been able to meet t.he bills. At the present time it appears we will have to have larger gift~ if we accept new · children. ' Let us pray for our Childrens' Home and remember the need of funds for operating through the coming year. Respectfully submitted, Mrs. Raymond Hurst.

HOIUe for Aged Baptists Report read by Lawrence Henry. Report adopted.

We have cared (or some eighty-four individuals during the year with an average of sixty-seven per day. As usual about 30 to 35 of this number are wheel chair and bed patients , some so helpless they have to be fed and cared (er the same as helple::;s babieli. They are quite a care, but it is a Christian respon sibility and a grea t privilege that Missouri Baptists have in ministering to them in the sunset hour of life. The Death Angel called for 19 of our number during the year, which

is not so bad considering the physical condition and age of our Home Family. Rev. Lawrence Henry

Report of Missouri Baptist Hospital Report given by Tim Larkin In the first 11 mon ths of the past year 13,446 people have receiv~d hospital care. Our free service amounted to more than $110,000.00, exclusive of any fees for IJhysicans. Baptists of the state have contributed $32,548.76 through the Cooperative Pro· gram and we are gra tE: ful for t his support of our ministry of healing. To operate the hospital for just one day requires $5,549.76. Forty·eightyoungwomen were graduated from our school of nursing last spring. During the year two new building projects were begun. A new lobby has been completed and is now in use Last fall a 91-bed addition to the hospital was started and should be completP.d about the first of the year, and will be one of the most modern in the city. These addition s are being financed on a payas·you.go basis, and so far we have been able to do this We, your committee, feel that our hospitals are serving the Lord in a great way and we urge your continued support through t he Coopera.tive Program, Respectfully submitted, Tim Larkin, Chairman

Report on State Missions Report read by W. E. Cowan Report adopted Our total Mission Program this year includes some 46 associational and Divisional Missionaries, 19 Missionary Pastors, assistance to 26 churches in erecting church buildings, 4 Pioneer Missionaries, one Rural Field Secretary, two State Evangelists, and six scholarships for young negro preachers and workers in Western Seminary in KansasCity. We are contributing to the support of the Mexican work in St. Joseph . We also employ a . full-time religioUs worker at the Mt. Vernon Tuberculosis Sanatorium. As a denomination and very largely through the Cooperative Program, we provide for the support of the Children's Home a t Pattonville, the Missouri Baptist Hospital at St. Louis and the Home for Aged Baptists at Ironton. They will receive through the state office during 1953 aside from designations as follows: The Children's Home $42,OOO.CO, Home for Aged Raptist. $42,000 and The Missouri Baptist Hospital $32,500.00 We should be fully aware that our great state and southwide program is utterly dependent for their support on the Cooperative Program. Every church should set up a budget and in that budget should provide as large a per cent as possible forthewinning of the lost to Christ. With our enlarging program for 1954, we should step up, by two or three per cent, or more, our Cooperative Program giving in all our churches throughout the state_ W. E. Cowan

BARRY COUNTY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION Report on Ho:me Missions

Report read by Fred Oliver. In 1952 the Home Mission Board had more than 1200 mlsslon aries, 362 of those were students dOing ten weeks of summer work. This wa s a gain in personnel of 104. The chief aim of Home Missions is soul winning. In the armed forces mOre than 30,000 were led to Christ by the ministry of 425 cbaplains. 6,625 were converted as a result of the labor of the evangelistic staff. The Department of EvangE'lism assumed responsibility for transfer oC:membership week in September. During the period of 1952 more than 400,000 were added to the membership of Baptist churches. Royal Ambassadors are very helpful to Home Missions. They build racks for the display of literatur~, also distribute tracts and literature. Thi s is a very worthy cause that helps many to learn of Christ and His New Testament plan of salvation. The Convention agencies cooperate with the Home Mission Board to enlarge the B.S.U for negros. This is a worthy cause that helps to educate thp. colored folk that they might be more capable of telling the Gospel to others of their race. In 1952 approval was given that the Home Missi on Board might borrow! million dollars at a rate of interest that would justify lending the money to needy churches. Annuities are being written and other available money is being placed in the loan fund with the idea of raising ten million dollars for thE' fund within the next five years. May we all give, work and pray that this goal might be reached, that by so doing the cause of Christ would be magnified. Respectfully submitted, Fred Oliver.

Foreign Missions Report Report given by Loren Henson Report adopted The purpose of the Foreign Mission Board is to produce missionaries capab le of winning lost people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and bring them together in churches for worship and service. These missionaries are of different professions- Ministerial, medical, educational, religious education, publication, social welfare and others. Southern Baptists have 911 missionaries distributed in 32 countries: Argentina 44, Brazil 180, Chile 32, China 48, Colombia 30, Costa Rica 4, Equacior 6, Formosa 26, Gold Coast 6, Guatemala 10, Hawaii 47, Honduras 4, Indonesia 16, Israp-I 13, Italy 10, Japan 98, Jordon 5, Korea 13, Lebanon 6, Malaya 9, :Mexico 30, Nigeria 159, Paraguay 16, Peru 4, PhiJ1ipines 25, Southern Rodesia 12, Spain 6, Switzerland (Seminary) 9, Thailand 15, Uruguay 13, Venezuela 8, Spanish Publishing House 8. . Lottie Moon offering, and s~ecial designated gifts$7,785 699.64 (Seven miUion, seven hundred eighty·five thousand, six hundred ninty-nine dollars and sixty-four cents). About 29% of these missionaries are ordained ministers, serving as pastors and field missionaries. These churches baptised 18,154 new converts. About 10% of the missionaries are doctors, nurses, dentists, techicians. They work in 8 hospitals, 7 clinics and 11 dispensaries maintained abroad by Southern BaptistI'. About 48% of the missionaries arc engaged in some kind of educationa l work. Southern Baptists maintain 460 schools including 17 seminaries and 6 women's train ing schools. Total enro llment 61,705j al;;o five orphanages and nine Good Will Centers, A foreign missionary, then, is someone that uses his earthly profession for Jesus' sake in a country not his own. Foreign missionaries arc living witnesses of the love of Christ in land s where witnesses are fewer than in their own. Respectfully Submitted, Loren Henson

RESOLUTIONS Report given by Chas. Vanzandt·

Report adopted.

As we are E.ntering into a new associational year and evil forces on every side, we, as Missionary Baptists, lo se not our missionary spirit, that God's cause may not fail. That through the cooperative program His Word may go throughout the whole world, as He commanded his church. That we may fulfill all missions thro ugh the cooperative program. And urge all our churches to be loyal to the cooperative program in their offerings through the church . Resolved, that we as an association express our thanks and appreciation to the Purdy Church (or their splendid hospitality and kind service, which they have rendered to us during the sessions of this body. Resolved, that we reaffirm our belief in the fundemental doctrines of our Baptist faith, and that we fully recognize the churches as the only authority in the earring out of the program, submitted by Christ. Resolved, that since we can see the growing evils of intemperance and the destructive effects of the liquor traffic, that we as parents, churches, preachers and tc>achers, give more interest in presenting to our yOIJng people th~ danger and bad resu lts from its use. Also, we would urge the churches to exercise church discipline as laid out in the scriptures. ehas Vanzandt, Jess Higgs. Vernie Cantrell, Committee

Report on American Bible Society THE WORLD MUST HAVE THE BIBLE. It is the one primary source of the knowledge of Christ. . Giving the Bible to the people of the world in their language is a mis-siona1' task. Someone must translate it, publish it, send it to the people wherever they ~!"~ live and make it available at a price they can afford to pay (far .below cost in mostof t~e countrit>s) or without charge in cases of spe('ial need. . . The American Bible Society SErves as that "someone." It aids in Bible translation, publishes the Scriptures without note or comment and distributes them, without profit and usually below cost, for mission work around the world. For the Blind \t supplies Scriptures in raised- letter systems and on Talking Book records. .: The American Bible Society is an active partner of Southern Bapti!o'ts in their world wide mission work. It serves every form of missions at home and abroad. ' Southern Baptists CAN LEAD in providing ENOUGH Bibles for world needs! In 1952 Southern Baptist churches gave $102,8'; 2 to the American Bible Society. Gifts from churches of all denominations totaled $750.147. Southern Bapt ist gifts stood in second place, exceeded only by Methodist gifts of $125,552.
