Given by Tom Flippin. Adopted moderator appointed. Tom Flippin as representative for the Word and Way. The next few years promise to be "seam-splitting" years for Southern Baptist work. Missouri Baptists want to be part

of this glorious effort, and they want to hear about its progress from week to week. They need this information. Informed Baptists are better Baptists. It is only natural for people to respond to cause's they understand. They will cooperate more . enthusistically, work more intelligent ly and give more sacrificially when they are aware of the needs and opportunities for service. You can inform the unenlisted, but you cannot enlist the uninformed. It was in realization of this fact that the Missouri Baptist General Association purchased the WORD AND WAY from the S. M. Brown family and began to operate it as their official journal on January 1, 1946. Although many of the departments had their own bulletins, there was a distinct need for one paper pUl'porting to cover the whole story of the Missouri Baptist enterprise at home and throughout the world. The WORD AND WAY offers three subscription plans. Individuals can purchase subscriptions by sending 2.00 and their name and address . Club subscriptions are groups of five or more s ubscriptions sent in together and cost 1.75 each. The best.'p lan by every standard is the Church Family Plan, which costs 12c a month or 1.44 per year. Missouri Baptist churches purchase 45,000 of the WORD AND WAY's 53,000 circulation under this plan: If the church desires, they may take advantage of the Free Trial Plan. The WORD AND WAY will be sent for two months without cost or obligation to ..the list submitted by the church. The only request is that the church consider adopting the Church Family Plan sometime during that period. The 650 churches already using this plan have found that it aids the pastor, boosts stewardship, stimulates mission interest and educates doctrinally. They are convinced that the WORD AND WAY does not cost, but pays. MISSOURI BAPTIST FOUNDATION Read by Marvin Bennett adopted without discussion. We eXlpres$ our gratitude to God for his many bl essings as we bring the report of Missouri Baptist Foundation. Prat Secretary of Evangelism in Missouri Notable progress has been made. Forty-two associations have scheduled revival cru sades for this year. Special emphasis in 1958 will be put on personal Soul-winning-two revivals per year and caring for the new converts. The 1958 Evangelistio conference is scheduled for January 20-22 at the Calvary Baptist church in Kansas City. A great Nation-wide crusade is scheduled for 1959-March 15-2~ for churches sout h on the Missouri river. Barry county has simultaneous revivals scheduled for October 13-27. We have faced difficulties in planning for the revivals. Two Chairmen of Evangelism have been elected and left the association; however the revivals will be held as planned, at present seven of our churches are making definite plans to be in the revivals. We recommend that we make definite plans to cooperate in the nation-wide crusade in Mar'ch 1959. And that churches make own plans for two revivals in 1958. W. P. In 1956, Southern Baptist churches, with 8% million members, gave $120,732 to the American Bible Society. Methodists, with 9%, million members, gave $174,447. They not only led in the total amount of their gifts; they even gave more per member! In the words of James 3 :10, "Brethren, these things ough t not so to be." Sometime was given here, for the Southwest Baptist College folks. Each speaking 5 minutes on the merits of missions and our Baptist colleges. Missouri Baptists are Bible people. Last a ssociational year we had an enrollment gain of n early 9,000. Our Sunday ::lchool enrollment t hen was :;32,800. However in state, 70% of our white population are not enlisted in any systematic Bible Study. In our Association we have a Sunday School Organization in 26 of the 27 reporting churches. The total reported enrollment is 2479, the average a ttendance, 1,615. Three churches reported training CDurses. Fourt een churches observed January Bible Study Week. In addition to our Sunday teaching program, our churches enrolled 901 in 14 Vacation Bible Schools, with 708 average attendance. We held three Executive Committee Meetings and three General S. S. Meetings. We conducted one VBS Clinic and provided teachers for church requesting help in the January Bible Study.

Because the Bible Society ser ves mission work-and because Southern Baptist missionaries depend on the Society for Scriptures they need for distribution to t heir peopleSouthern Baptist churches give to the American Bible Society. Remembering Hebrews 10:24, "Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works" -consider these facts and figures:

Our aims for next year include: 1. Preparation Week in every ch urch. (The book-"The Sunday School and Missions" by Howse. 2. Bible Study Week in January. (Hosea is suggested). 3. Vacation Bible Schools for all Baptist boys and girls and all others who can be enli sted.

REPORT OF CHURCH MUSIC DEPARTMENT Mrs. Jack Swearingen, Director Report given by Mrs. Mildred Swearingen, Association Music director. Motion and second to adopt the report. Discussed by Mildred Swearingen, adopted. We have had three hymn sings this year with 16 churches participating and an average attendance of 99. The first one was held in November at the Exeter Church, theme, Praise, Prayer and Dedication. The second one at Corinth Church, th eme, The Cross. And the third at Arnhart Church, theme, Consecration and Service. This one was an all youth sing with the young people of our association presenting the program. The Cassville church music derpartment has reported monthly. They report five graded choirs with 81 enrolled and a church music study course conducted. Our recommendations for the coming year are. 1. The goal for our church music ministry be to reach all the people. The music program being such that the Sunday School, Training Union, W.M.U., and Brotherhood all be served through it. 2. All churches and Pastors co-operate in an all out effort to discover potential leaders and provide training through an associational church music school. 3. Continue to take advantage of all literature and helps provided by our state church music department under the direction of Mr. Dale Brubaker. 4. Every church study the neW book by Dr. W. Hines Sims, "The Church Music Manual," Which will meet a great need of promoting understanding of the church music ministry. It will rprovide help for every church-large or small, rural or city. tin Brock, and report adopted. First, we want to pause long enough to lift our hearts to God in thanksgiving for His manifold blessings upon us and our work this past year. He has been so good to us. We are also very appreciative of all the fine cooperation we have had from the brethren out over the state. The fellowship in labor has been very sweet.

adopted. Without doubt the Southern Baptist Protective Plan (formerly the Minister's Retirement Plan), is a means of grace to Sou thern Baptist Ministers and their wives, if, they meet conditions for it's benefits. It's a provision for disability, and for security after age forces them from active pastoral work. It gives to the active and mcriticing pastor a "feeling of s ecurity" which is a boon to his spirit, especially when he thinks of the time when the churches will not use his service on account of his age. Personally, I could wish that every pastor in Barry County Association and his wife could have membership in the Southern Baptist Protective Plan since I myself have experienced the blessings that have come to me, and my wife from the Minister's Retirement Plan. I suggest that every pastor take time and effort to know and understand just what the Plan really is. Any pastor who will do this may get information by writing R. C. Miller, Field Re'presentative of the Relief and Annuity Board, Box 901, Miama. Okla. The S. B. P. Plan might be to a Southern Baptist Pastor in our day and time, what the Church at Philippi was to Paul when he was in the Roman Prison. From the prison he wrote to the Church say ing, "I have received your payment in full, and more too. I am amply supplied after getting the things you sent by Epaphroditus; they are like sweet incense, the kind of sacrifice that God accepts and approves." (Williams.)

STATE CONVENTION Our State Brotherhood Convention met at the Swope Park Baptist Church in Kansas City, May 2-3, 1957. Approximately 600 persons registered for the convention. Kansas City Baptist men really did a marvelous job taking care of the convention. We feel that the things accomplished at this meeting will have far reaching effect upon our future work. One of the most important items of business was the adopting of the "Guide for· Missouri Baptist Brotherhood Convention." While it is not strictly a constitution, it does furnish us with an orderly precise statement of the purposes, organization and plans of operation for our convention. This is something we have needed for a long time. It was adopted enthusiastically by the men. Another important forward step was the election of an Advisory Council made up of eight pastors and associational superintendents of missions from all parts of the state. This step in organization corresponds to the associational Advisory Council of Pastors. Last year there was considerable confusion and misunderstanding about how and where to report Royal Ambassadors in the local church letter to the General Association. As a result of that we did not get a true count of our men a nd boys enrolled in Brotherhood and Royal Ambassador chapter,.

And more than ever need the prayers and support of Missouri baptists. We plan to relocate. Build a 500 bed general hospital. A School of nursing for 200 students. A kitchen, Dining room, Office space, Parking facilities, Power plant, an X-ray department, Clinical laboratories, Physical therapy department and all other ancillary services ade- 23-

quate for the completed Missouri Baptist Hospital: but to build as many actual hospital beds as we are financially able to undertake with a reasonable sized debt. One of the outstanding accomplishments of the year is the free service $169,916.55 . To help meet the expense of free service Missouri ba;ptists gave through the cooperative program $32,348.58. During the past year 11,887 were received in the hospital for treatment. Last August forty-four young women completed their training in our school of nursing; and in March sixty-six completed their pre-clinical training. At the present time there are 190 enrolled in our school. The ministry of our hospital Chaplain is very effective and a blessing to many. We recommend that Barry County Baptists be much in prayer and give to the end that all the services rendered by our hospital may be rendered in a distinctly Christian Spirit, that God's plan and purpose for the future of the hospital will be unfolded 'and that Missouri Baptists may have the courage to do the ' thing God's leadership directs. er needs the services of the Home or when another plan can be made'that more nearly meets the needs of that individual child. Beginning this year the Home provides the means by which eligible young people under care may attend the first two years of college. An arrangement has been worked out with two junior colleges so that our high school graduates may go on to college tuition free. Their room and board is provided by the Children's Home. Six of our fine young ·people are entering our Missouri Baptist Colleges under this plan this fall. Other advances include: (1) The employment of a school teacher at the Home on a full-time basis who gives instruction to children who need help. This schooling in no way replaces but supplements their work in Pattonville Public Schools. (2) The bringing of a Director of Cottage Life on to the staff. This person co-ordinates the work and home life in all of the cottag€s on the campus. (3) The possession of a second 40-acre farm . This land is in the Missouri River Bottoms and in addition to having a modernized farm home caring for six teenage boys, it has a full 40 acres in corn. This farm is operated in conjunction with our other farm where the livestock is raised. The monthly pUblication, the "Messenger," is reaching out to more and more folks each year. All of our church leaders and Baptist families should be on the mailing list. We want our Baptist people and friends informed about the Home and our total program of Child-Care. We recommend that Barry County association continue to support our children's Home as usual and that we support t he Linn Haven Home over and above by writing an amount in our church Budget or by special offerings. Respectfullty submitted. Mrs. W. E . Cowan.

CHILDRENS HOME Report also read by W. P. Richardson. Motion and second to adopt the report. Your Children's Home ended the year 1956-57 with record num bers of children served in every phase of its program. The record shows that we as Missouri Baptists were serving 269 children on June 30, 1957. It also shows that 392 children were served during the year for a gain of 39 over the previous year. All of these figures show Child-Care Advance among Missouri Baptists. This care is made possible through three main channels: The Co-operative Program, the Thanksgiving Offering, and the Birthday Offering. Amounts received during the past year were as follows: Co-operative Program-$43,458.83 , Thanksgiving Offering-$64,375.00, Birthday Offering-$25,475 .00. The budget t or operating the Hom , has naturally increased as the program has grown. The total budget for last year was $218,800.00. It is the policy of the Home to admit children on the basis of their need. Children of any age are eligible for admission providing this agency is equipped to meet their needs. Children are discharged from the Home when they reach the age of twenty-one or at any time prior to that when the child no long-

The past year has presented its difficulties and trials; but the Lord has been mindful of us, and through all of our eJO]}eriences He has proven Himself to be a God of Love. When we have asked we have received, and our Father knows how to give good things to them that ask him. To Him be all the praise and all the glory. Since the disastrous nursing home fire at Warrenton, and the tightening of fire safety standards in Missouri, we have had a number of inspections. Althouh these inspectors have openly praised the beauty of the Home, its cleanliness, its

The Office of Work with Negroes implementing mutual assistance for better trained leadership in our sister churches. The Department of Student Work enlisting more than 8,000 students in local church work. The development of true stewardship and maximum service on the part of every member of every church. The creation of a healthful, vigorous atmosphere for Christian work. The execution of the Lord's command for a preaching, teaching, healing ministry in Missouri as the base for promoting the same redemptive program around the world. Statewide survey now in progress to locate every community needing a preaching station, mission, or new church. 27 associations in Simultaneous Schools of Missions during 1957. Now have 6 mission stations and churches in Iowa. Need 300 Southern Baptist churches and missions in that state NOW. Glenn Lauderdale, Chairman HOME MISSIONS Report read by Fred Oliver. Motion and second to adopt the report. The 1957 report of home missions must of necessity deal with the 1956 figures. At the beginning of 1957 the Home Mission Board reported 1,180 missionaries, an increase of 81 over the previous year. Professions of faith reported by the missionaries numbered 39,458, an increase of 1,983 over the previous year. The Home Mission Board's income for 1956 was: from the - 27-

Cooperative Program $2,027,369.87; Annie Armstrong Offering, $1,574,890.61; and from designated gifts, $127,761.01: total, $3,730,027.49. Among major emphases during 1957 the Board will continue its effort to enlist every church in an evangelistic ministry and every member to participate in soul-winning. Conservation of results will be pursued. All work of the Board is in full co-operation with all other agencies of the denomination. The "30,000 Program," with its challenge to constitute 10,000 new churches and establish 20,000 additional mission sta tions in seven years, will receive major emphasis not only throughout the year but for the duration of the Third Jubilee of Bwptists. Increased loan funds are greatly needed. Minority groups: Indians, Negroes, and language groups will receive major attention. The Board has set a goal of 1,050 missionaries serving minority groups by 1964. The Chaplains Commission reported 421 chaplains on active duty and 11,074 professions of faith recorded in their ministry. Home missionaries were instrumental in starting 729 new missions and constituting 296 new churches. The greatest need of the Board is expressed in the single statement: We need your prayers and personal interest, a larger proportion of the church budget dollar, a wider interest in tithing, missionary volunteers committed to home missions, and a share in every Southern Baptists' consecration.

RECOMMENDATIONS: .Therefore, aware of the value of the Forward Program and conscious of the eternal good that would result from reaching the Baptist Jubilee goal in cooperative program giving, your committee recommends: (1) That our association plan a ten hour Forward Program clinic to train our pastors and other leaders in its techniques. (2) That our churches proceed to use the Forward Program to subscribe their annual budget as soon as leadership can be trained. (3) That each church, beginning with its 1958 budget, seek to increase its gifts to missions through the Cooperative Program by at least 2% of its total budget per year through at least 1964. Respectfully submitted by Loren Easley

COOPERATIVE PROGRAM Report read by Loren Easley. Mo tion and Second to adopt the report. Your committee is happy to report. that mISSIOn gifts through the Cooperative Program increased nearly $13 million in 1956 over 1955 throughout the c·onvention. Gifts for 1955 were $135.7 million and 1956 gifts were $37 million. More and more churches are finding that the best way to increase Cooperative Program giving is on a percentage of the ch urch's total budget per year between now and the Jubilee Year, 1964. If each church meets this goal, Cooperative Program giving is estimated to climb from $43 million in 1957 to $189 million in 1964. The Foreward Program of Church Finance is destined to play a vital role in helping increase church income for all causes. - 28-

FOREIGN MISSIONS Report read by Chas Vanzandt. Motion and second to adopt the report. The Foreign Mission report gives the following. Appointments during 1956 and from January to May, 1957, were 1154. The Board expects to reach its Advance Program goal of 1750 Missionaries by 1964. Southern Baptists entered three additional countries during the past year, and eleven additional 'missions stations brought the number to 211 the number of centers in which the missionaries of the Foreign Mission Board live. The Missionaries served during 1956 in 38 areas of the world. The Foreign Mission Board received $12,733,681 from all sources during 1956. Contributions for FOreign Missions accounted for $12,474,638 of that amount. Funds from the Lotties Moon Christmas offering for the fiscal year (May 1, 1956 to May 1, 1957 amounted to $5,240,745.39. Contributions for world relief totaled $67,122, during 1956. Quite a number of our men and women feel the call to go to the Foreign Fields, but are unable to go, because there are not enough funds for the Board to send them. The resposibility rests upon the churches to give more funds, that more Who are called, may go. Committee, Chas VanZandt.
