F RO M T H E PA S TO R Last weekend Jesus cautioned us against greed. “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (LK 12:13) This weekend Jesus tells us to pursue the treasures of heaven, rather than the things of this world. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. (LK 12: 33) The thing about greed is that it’s about more than money. When you compare it with the other deadly sins, greed, along with lust, are the only two that caution against an interior attitude rather than an action. St. Thomas Aquinas said greed was the worst of the sins because it is like a gateway sin that can lead to other sins. Greed can turn love into lust, leisure into sloth, hunger into gluttony, honor into pride, righteous indignation into anger, and admiration into envy. St. Thomas Aquinas also says that in our greediness for things other than God we often make substitutes. He identified four typical substitutes for God: wealth, pleasure, power, and honor. I recently had my own momentary brush with the pursuit of honor instead of God. My high school classmate and good friend, Major Nick Krajicek, from West Point, NE is the number four slot pilot with the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron. The Thunderbirds were in Omaha recently as the main attraction of the Offutt Air Show. Approximately 100,000 people came out over the weekend to watch them. To say I’m extremely proud of him would be an understatement. To say I’m not a little envious would be a blatant lie. Where did this envy come from? It came from my greed for honor. For some reason (or lack of it), I felt a need to be honored and praised like Nick was being honored and praised. Thankfully, when I’m not being fed by my relationship with Jesus Christ and pursuing other things other than God like honor and pleasure, I find myself feeling quite empty. When this happens, I know that all I have to do is return to the Lord, ask for forgiveness, ask for help, and ask Him to fill me with His life and love, which is eternally satisfying. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” This is Jesus’ gentle reminder that when we do not have peace or serenity in our hearts, we can bet that we are pursuing the wrong treasures.
