AUGUST 2016
STALLION NEWS 2945 Iolani Street, Pukalani, HI 96768 Principal’s Message Dear Pukalani ‘Ohana, Wow! A month has gone by already, and so much learning is already taking place. We had some changes to our Pukalani Elementary School (PES) community this month. Please welcome Kristen Dias and Taylor Hamaguchi to our Kindergarten team. Please welcome Paula CernalTavares as our new cafeteria manager.
OUR MISSION Pukalani Elementary School Is to provide all students with a well-rounded standards-based education so they become caring, capable, and contributing leaders of the 21st century. ———————————— The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2005) 1. Be Proactive 2. Begin With The End In Mind 3. Put First Things First 4. Think Win-Win 5. Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood 6. Synergize 7. Sharpen The Saw
I also want to take a moment to say Aloha to Mrs. Caitlin Follstad and Mr. Kevin Follstad. They are expecting a child and have decided to move to the mainland. They have both been strong positive contributors to our PES community, and while we wish them all the best, they will be missed greatly. This month we have focused on settling in to our new inclusive model of instruction. What this means is that all students remain in their homerooms for their core instruction blocks in language arts and math. Students with additional needs, either ELL or special education, receive that specialized instruction at another time in the day. The response to intervention (RTI) secondary supports will begin during second quarter. Students who require secondary supports will remain in their classroom for this support. This support is in addition to the core instruction block. Our Core instruction language arts blocks are 90 minutes and our math blocks are 60 minutes. Secondary supports are an additional 30 minutes of targeted intervention in each student’s identified area of need. We found that there was too much instructional time lost transitioning between classes. We did a great deal of testing last year. We are going to minimize the amount of STAR testing we do this year to 4 times a year. The two new reading programs we are using, MAX Scholar and Reading +, have assessments that are built into the program. We continue to focus on STREAM instruction and our art and physical education classes have begun. STREAM instruction, which includes science and technology, will be done in the classroom this year. All our teachers were certified to be Project Lead the Way (PLTW) instructors and are excited to be able to start implementing the PLTW lessons. The installation of the mural will begin at the end of September so be on the lookout for a request for volunteers to help with the grouting! Thank you for the great open house turnout! Educating your students is a partnership, and we appreciate all the support you provide to your children’s learning at PES.
