Dear Orienteering Friends, We are pleased to welcome competitors, clubs and guests to the 11th Memorial of the 7th Brigade „PUMA“ – THERMENLAND OPEN 2016. The event will take place in Varaždin and Varaždiske Toplice as the host cities, and will be hosted by the Association of veterans of the 7th Guards Brigade "PUMA" and Orienteering Club Međimurje. We wish to organize a challenging competition with the respect to the idea of orienteering without borders. We are happy to invite competitors from the region to beautiful areas and new maps.

Competition is a part of our “Orienteering Triangle“ event. We wish you good results and are looking forward to seeing you! Organizers

1. Varaždin County Varaždin County is famous for its Baroque splendour, its music and art, and its unspoilt wild-life and unique scenery. In the region between the River Drava and the forested slopes of Ravna Gora, Kalnik and Ivanšćica, the highest Zagorje mountain, lies a wealth of Croatia's historic and cultural heritage. The Varaždin area offers so many tourist spots that it is one of the most attractive destinations in Croatia. The region has been inhabited from time immemorial, testified by the world-famous Vindija cave, which contains the first traces of prehistoric man in Europe. There are countless churches throughout the region, from the small one in Lepoglava's Purga, decorated with Ranger's frescoes, to Varaždin's splendid Baroque cathedral, numerous manors, such as Maruševec, wonderful ornamental parks, like the Opeka Arboretum, and many castles (Batthyany in Ludbreg, and the Old Castle of Varaždin, for instance). One of the most magnificent places to see, medieval Trakošćan, is the pearl of Hrvatsko (Croatian) Zagorje, situated on a hill and surrounded by a forest-park and a lake, where a nature-trail provides peace and relaxation. An exhibition inside the castle documents the history of the area. In the past, people have built many settlements on the friendly edges of the Pannonian Plain where picturesque hills begin to rise. The largest and best-preserved of these, Varaždin, was once the Croatian capital, the seat of the Ban and the Croatian Parliament, and is now the economic and cultural centre of the country. Also famous is Varaždinske Toplice, Croatia's oldest thermal spa, which attracted the cream of European society for centuries and is still a famous watering-place and recreation-centre today. Varaždin itself, 800 years old, has one of the best-preserved medieval town-centres in Europe: a heritage proudly displayed in the city’s many museums and galleries. Even the cemetery is famous for its horticulture! Visitors can enjoy a whole array of events, such as the Splendid Ball; the 'Špancirfest' (Street Walkers' Festival); the festival Evenings of Baroque Music; the New Year's Eve race (starting exactly at midnight on December 31st) and many others.

3. Event Centre and Accommodation During Competition we will provide free (no cost) official accommodation in the sports hall/school (on hard floor) in Varaždinske Toplice, parking place for camper vans and camping place for tents. Competitors should bring their own sleeping bags/mats. Shower and toilets are included. Please clean your place when you leave accommodation. Nobody will take care of your stuff.

4. Rankings:

Stages 1.WRE., 2.WRE – World Ranking Events Results of 1.WRE., 2.WRE and night stages are added together for the overall individual winner of Thermenland 2016. For classes MW10, MW12, MW14 and BEGINNERS we added together only 1.WRE. and 2.WRE stages for the overall individual winner. 1.WRE stage – Croatian Long distance Championships

7. Control punching system The control posts are equipped with SportIdent electronic punching sytem and old types of punchers. Location of controls will also be marked with small pieces of paper. You should put your SI number into the online entry form.

The terrain has a rich road and path network. Medium hilly and hilly area. WARM UP: On the way to start. Warming map will be available at the start for WRE runners. ADDITIONAL ENTRIES: Additional entries possible until 09:00 at finish area/competition center if there are maps available. DISTANCE FROM FINISH TO START: 1500m. Follow the blue and white stripes. EMBARGO: It is forbidden to enter the competition area one month before the race. In case of violation of the prohibition organizer reserves the right of suspension. CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS: Are on the map and in the second start corridor. MAP PROTECTION: Maps will be printed on waterproof paper. START NUMBERS/BIBS: Is obligatory used for all three races. WARM UP: In quarantine ADDITIONAL ENTRIES: Additional entries possible until 21:00 at finish area/competition center if there are maps available.. DISTANCE FROM FINISH TO START: 50m. Follow the blue and white stripes. EMBARGO: It is forbidden to enter the competition area one and half Hour before the race. Competitors must be in Quarantine by 20:30. Quarantine is marked in map. Other restrictions are according to IOF sprint rules. In case of violation of the prohibition organizer reserves the right of suspension. CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS: Are on the map and in the second start corridor. MAP PROTECTION: Maps will be printed on waterproof paper. START NUMBERS/BIBS: Is obligatory used for all three races.
