Oconee County Primary School Little Chiefs’ News April 2014 The mission of Oconee County Primary School is to strive for academic excellence while providing students with safe and positive learning experiences.
OCPS Parents, Each year all Georgia public schools elect school council members to serve a two-year commitment when terms expire. Enclosed with this newsletter is a ballot to nominate one parent representative for the 2014-2015 Oconee County Primary School Council. The purpose of school councils is to advise and make recommendations to the principal on any matter related to school improvement and student achievement. Council meetings occur four times a year at 7:30 a.m. and usually last around an hour. At the meetings, school council members learn about school and system processes from a variety of school and system leaders. If you would be interested in serving on our council, please list your name on the nomination form and return it to your child’s teacher by April 25. This year’s election will take place on May 8 during the Kindergarten Parent Orientation program and ballots will be located in the school foyer until 6:45 p.m. for parents to vote on the nominations. Thanks for your participation in this important process and we look forward to electing a new parent to the school council. Our sincere appreciation goes out to current council members Billy Leopold, Steven Brooks, Melanie Howard, Rebecca Barrett, and Jennifer Miller and to Faith Downey for serving as a parent representative for the past two years. Notes from PTO Mark your calendars for May 5th – 9th Staff Appreciation Week This is a special time to honor your child’s teachers and staff at OCPS who lend their passion and skills to educating and loving our children. We have a plan to acknowledge the teachers in a special way each day and would love for the whole school to join us. The PTO will be purchasing raffle cards to local restaurants that will be raffled off this week. The principals are providing breakfast for the staff one day, and the PTO is providing lunch another day. Also a special gift will be given to each teacher and staff member on Friday from the PTO. If you want to help with putting these gifts together please contact Kelly Brooks at
[email protected]. Please plan to have your child join in the appreciation by doing the following for their teacher: Monday - Perform a random act of kindness Tuesday - Write a sweet note or draw a picture Wednesday - Bring in a flower from your garden to fill your teacher’s vase. (We will have Gerber Daisies for sale on Wednesday morning for $1.00 each if it would be easier for you to send your child with money to buy one or two on their way in to class in the morning.) Thursday - Bring in a special snack. Be creative: sweet, salty, healthy, etc. Friday - Give your teacher and another staff member a big hug today. Thank you for helping us make this a special week for our OCPS staff!!!
Thanks so much to everyone for supporting our spring book fair! We raised $2000 for our library program! This spring fair was the most successful one we have had in several years! Money raised will be used to purchase new books, iPads, online subscriptions, and studio equipment. Our "All for Books" program was also very successful! We collected $500 with our class chain-link contest and lollipop tree! Not only was that money used to help students in our school get books, Scholastic will be donating 500 books in our school name to two charities - the Kids in Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. The class with the most chain links was Ms. Gambrell's class with 54 links and the runner up was Ms. Amy's class with 52 links. Ms. Gambrell's class won posters from the book fair and Ms. Amy's class got all the lollipops from the lollipop tree! April is Poetry Month and April 24 is National Poem in Your Pocket Day! All students will be given a poem for their pocket that day that they can share with each other. To keep up with all the happenings in our librarymedia center, please visit the library website and blog, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
Please join us for RELAY FOR LIFE May 2, 2014, 6:00 p.m. at North Oconee High School.
