GSC Foundational Competencies EDU 713 Content Area Literacy (Advanced) Version 7.31.14
The Granite State College (GSC) School of Education has developed vertically aligned pivotal standards for each strand of coursework offered in General-Special Education; Mathematics; Early Childhood; Reading/Writing Teacher; and Advanced Endorsements. Pivotal standards (PSs) represent capacities that are fundamental to effective educator practice. As such, each teacher candidate must demonstrate proficiency in all pivotal standards within a course before receiving a grade ~ and for all courses in their program in order to receive a degree or certification at the completion of their program of studies. GSC believes PSs are central to the future of effective educational opportunities for youth. The items below articulate the PSs and the academic and observational evidence required for this course. Pivotal Standards Students will be able to: (1) Learning outcome #2: Develop an understanding of the complexities and difficulties of content area reading and various methods to evaluate the readability of texts. Students will identify literacy and critical thinking skills within specific content subjects; (2) Learning outcome #3: Explore strategic thinking and ways to scaffold instruction to meet the needs of struggling and English Language Learning students. Students will evaluate literacy and critical thinking skills in order to scaffold instruction in various content areas. (3) Learning outcome #4: Learn strategies for teaching vocabulary, comprehension, writing and study skills and share these strategies with other professionals Students will provide professional development to teachers and paraprofessionals in best practices regarding content area literacy. Learning outcome #5: Develop lessons/workshops to incorporate strategies before reading, during reading and after reading in content area materials.
