Penn Brook Gazette No. 7
November 2017 Nico: What is the average amount of cans you collect each year? We don’t know yet because this is our first year doing it!
Food Drive
By: Nico Schembri and Garrett Haley
On Wednesday, November 8, we walked to the Georgetown Police Station to interview Officer Matt Carapelluci. We interviewed him because we wanted to know more about the food drive that the police station was running. Below are the questions that we asked him and Officer Carapelluci’s answers.
Garrett: What type of food is acceptable? Grains, powdered milk, cereal, anything on the flyer!
Nico: What is a food drive? The food drive is where we collect food for people who can’t afford canned goods or other food. The police officers are going to come to Penn Brook to collect the food on the 17th. Garrett: Where does the food collected by the food drive go to? It goes to Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury. They donate the food to people who don’t have enough food in general or for Thanksgiving.
Experiential Learning
Nico: Does the food have to be canned? Yes! Or boxed. It cannot be something that needs to stay hot or cold because by the time it gets there, it will be gross.
During the week of November 6th, sixth graders had the opportunity to take part in experiential learning, team building, and volunteering activities! Below are some student accounts of their awesome week. It was an awesome week to be a 6th grader. “On Monday we helped in the cafeteria. We re-stocked food and bread. We helped make lunches for kids. Next, we made fruit cups. Some kids sorted veggies. Everyone had a good time! Also, we worked on the menu for December. Each student got to choose a day and pick all of the food for the day! We learned a lot about food!” ~ Briana Noci
Garrett: What food products do most people need? Milk, grains, protein, pasta, cereal, and freeze dried fruit! Nico: Have you gotten a lot of donations so far? Not yet because there is nowhere to store it! We will collect it all at once. Garrett: Can we bring fruit to the drive? You can bring fruit but only if it is packaged. You can also bring freeze dried fruit. Nico: Why do the police run the food drive? They wanted to do it to help the people who aren’t so fortunate. Garrett: How many years have you been collecting cans? This is the first year doing it! It was started by Officer Morrissey and I help her out with it.

“This week we helped set up for the food drive. First we made posters. We put drawings of food and donuts on the posters. Then we wrote interview questions about the food drive. We decorated food boxes to put in the hallway so people can put canned goods in the boxes. We liked doing these projects because we did a lot of drawing and art.” ~ Olivia Ferrera
get blue raspberry coolattas and of course we got donuts. We did team building activities, like making symbols, charades, and a lot more. I had fun when all the kids were away, I hope it happens again!!” ~ Garrett Haley
“On Wednesday, I went into Mrs. Homan’s classroom to help the little kids with their work. When I walked in they were playing addition top-it . Addition top-it is when two kids get a deck of cards and they each get two cards then add them together. Whoever gets the highest numbers takes all the cards. We played that game for awhile. I liked going into Mrs. Homan’s classroom because she is very kind and fun to be around.” ~ Malia Maglio

Football
The Patriots are starting off at a good start (first place in their division). However, Patriot middle linebacker Donta Hightower suffered a season ending injury (torn pectoral). The Patriots also just traded their back-up QB (Jimmy Garoppolo) to the San Francisco 49ers. The Philadelphia Eagles are in the top seed with 8 wins and 1 loss in their division. The Pats are 7 wins 2 loses On October 17, Brandon Bolden, a Patriot player, came to the Georgetown Middle High School to meet families and sign autographs. This was a fundraiser for the girls volleyball team.
“At MakerSpace this week we did team building activities. One game we played was that we had to balance stuff on a rope without dropping it. We had to work as a team to make sure it didn’t drop. The other game we did was using a pipe cleaner to build the biggest self-standing tower we could in under fifteen minutes. After, we went outside and had to guide ourselves out of a maze while blindfolded. I liked this week because we all got to know each other and work as a team.” ~ Gaby Rego
Hockey The Bruins record is 5 wins, 3 losses, 3 ties. The Lighting is 10 wins, 2 losses, 2 ties. They’re first place in the Atlantic Division, Eastern Division and Western Division.“They are so good this year.” says Kylie Correa. The New York Rangers are not doing so good this year. They are in last place in the Metropolitan Division. “The teams have so many games. They have one like every other day.” quoted Madison Ouellette.
“This week we volunteered at Perley. When we were at Perley we helped the little kids with letters, color matching and we also played outside and played hide and seek. We played in their little kitchen outside and made “meals” (mostly out of mulch and rocks). After we came in, we watched a story video on “The LIttle Red Hen” and we talked about what happened. I liked going to Perley to help the little kids because I learned what they did and how it’s different from our learning.” ~ Adriana Bettinger
Baseball I can't believe that they went in the 7th game but finally someone won - the Astros. “They won World Series” 5-1 and it was very exciting to watch.
“This week at school we went hiking and did lots of outdoor building. On Wednesday, we went hiking in the woods and saw horses and lots of nature and all of us loved the cool breeze. We also went to Dunkin Donuts to

Wonder By: Mia Ciaramitaro
By: Isabelle Gondella and Ava Johnson
Have you ever wondered about Wonder? I read the book and I think it’s wonderful. Wonder is an award winning book. Wonder is a book mainly about a boy named August. August has a mother, a sister, a dad, and a dog. August is about ten years old, when his mother decides to send him to school for the very first time. August does not look like a normal kid, he was born with a disease that made him look different from other kids. This is why August doesn’t want to go to school. I wouldn’t blame him. When August finally gets to school, he gets teased. Although, a girl named Summer and a boy named Jack become his best friends. This is a good book for kids to remind them that you should always “Choose Kind.”I would definitely suggest this book. The movie looks good too. I am so excited for the movie to come out on November 17, 2017. Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay and Izabella Vidovic act in the movie. Julia Roberts is a well known actress, born on October 28,1967, she was born a star. In this film she will be playing Isabel Pullman, August’s mom. Owen Wilson has been in a few films himself, born on November 18,1986. He will be playing Nate Pullman, August’s dad. Jacob Tremblay is a well known Canadian actor, but has come to the United States to act in this film. He is 12 years old, born on October 5, 2006.He is playing the wonderful August Pullman, also known as Auggie. Izabella Vidovic is known for her many children’s films including Mary Poppins, Camp Rock, and Annie. She was born on May 27, 2017. In this film she is playing Via Pullman, Auggie’s sister. In my opinion these actors were born ready for this extravagant performance. I hope you will wanted to read and watch Wonder. This movie is rated PG. It’s great for younger viewers. The film’s genre is drama. If you like drama and a good story, then I would suggest this book. This is why I think Wonder is wonderful.

How to make slime:
5 Second Rule
Do you think that naming 3 things is easy? Well, have you tried naming them in under 5 seconds. This new game that anyone can play, is called the 5 second rule. The point of the game is to name three things based off of one question. For example, if the card you pick reads, Name 3 breeds of dogs, you have 5 seconds to name the three breeds of dogs. If you fail to name 3 breeds of dogs or any 3 things then someone else gets a turn to name them, but they can’t name anything the person or people said before them. The 5 second rule game is a family fun game and is a funnier way of doing trivia. Plus, the questions are easier for kids to answer. It’s a battle to get the most cards between all the players and whoever has the most cards when there are no cards left wins. You can get it at your local target for $13.99. Jake Hiltz - “I like it is fun, active and fast.’’ Cameron Harris -”It has a lot of hard questions.” Emma Carideo - “I like it.” Emily Mcmanus - “I like it.”
1. Put your glue in the bowl. 2. Add your food coloring (optional). 3. Add 1 tablespoon of your activator. 4. Mix thoroughly until the slime starts forming. 5. Add activator as needed. 6. Knead with your hands. Tip: if slime is too hard add lotion to slime. How
to make Borax solution:
Put 1 teaspoon of Borax in 2 cups of warm water, stir until dissolved.

Sam McClure - “Liked it and I like how it is like hedBanz but based on Disney.” Avery Upite - “Liked it and liked how it was based on Disney.” Lexie Sheahan - “It was fun and I liked how it was based on Disney.” Reid Archambault - “It was good.” Joseph Romano - “It was fun.”
