GHS Daily Announcements September 20, 2017 UPCOMING NEWS: Reminder that there is a half day of school this Friday, September 22. Release time will be 10:55 am. The Powder Puff Game has been scheduled for October 26! Permission slips and jersey order forms are now available in the 1st floor office, all participants musts have a completed permission slip turned back in to the office by October 2 to play. Extra yearbooks from last year will not be sold at this time. Very, very few extras were ordered and distribution to those who placed an order needs to be completed. [email protected] to get on the list. To ensure you get a yearbook for this CURRENT school year please order online by going to the Grandville High School homepage. Click on students or parents and scroll down to click on the yearbook link. Order early to get the best price of the year because the cost goes up throughout the school year! Any yearbooks for 2017 grads may be picked up in C-17 near the AV room today, but will be in the main office for pick up starting on Thursday.
Do you dream of seeing the Eiffel Tower, eating a crepe while strolling the streets of Paris, touring a medieval village in the Pyrenees Mountains, or basking in the sun on the beaches of the French Riviera? If so, there will be an informational meeting for anyone interested in going on the France 2018 trip in Mrs. Callendar's room (218) on Tuesday, September 26 at 7pm. Students must complete at least French 1 before attending the France trip. Please see Mrs. Callendar for details. The theme for the varsity football game at East Kentwood this Friday, September 22, has been changed. Instead of neon, the theme will be Orange Out to support Mr. VanderSlice during his ongoing battle with leukemia. Wear orange! Attention Seniors! Homecoming is right around the corner, and it's finally YOUR YEAR!! Before Homecoming Court voting begins, please take a moment to check the list of senior names posted in the new hallway outside of the office. If your name doesn't appear the way you want it to on the ballot, please change it to what you would prefer (for example: changing "Christopher" to "Chris"). Then, next week Monday, look for an email from Mrs. Van Hekken with a link to vote for Homecoming Court along with specific directions. Any questions, see Mrs. Van Hekken in room 166. Want a super fun way to earn volunteer hours? Our very own East Elementary is having a 'Spooktacular' carnival on Friday October 27. Attention Freshman: A reminder that Jostens representatives will be here TODAY during your lunch or from 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm, to help you place your class ring order and size you. Don’t forget that by ordering on this day you can save $20.00 and purchase a discounted Class of 2021 Pride Pack. Any upperclassmen who would like to order a class ring should plan on seeing Jostens at this time as well. Extra order information packets are available in the Main office or you can design your ring at Jostens.com. Mrs. Fischer has planned a trip to see Les Miserables downtown on Tuesday, November 21. Pancake breakfast tickets that are not sold need to be turned in today by 3:00pm..
GUIDANCE OFFICE NEWS: The GRCC Fall Open House will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10am - 1pm at the Wisner-Bottrall Applied Technology Center. One lucky participant will win a $500. GRCC scholarship just for attending. Go to www.grcc.edu/openhouse for more information! Scholarship available in the counseling office: The Credit Union One scholarship is available now and is due April 1, 2018. Details for this scholarship can be found under Scholarship List in the colleges tab. Pick up information in the counseling office. The University of Michigan is starting a program called the Go Blue Guarantee. If you are admitted to the Ann Arbor campus, with a family income of less than $65,000. LIBRARY NEWS: The back to school reading challenge at the Media Center is in full force, with so many students participating we are extending the contest. All forms need to be submitted to the library by October 16th, a drawing will be held at that time for six (6) gift cards. Winners will be announced during announcements. Extra forms are available in the Media Center or from your English teacher.
There still is several students with books out from last year. Please get those books in so others may read them. If you have any questions on a book or fine, please stop down to the Media Center so we can help you and get this taken care of so you will not receive an email every Wednesday. These should be cleared up by this Friday. When is your book due? What is a date due card? If you checked out a book from the media center, look in the inside cover of your book, there should be a DATE DUE card and it will tell you when your library book is due. The first wave of books checked out from the first week of school will be due on September 21st. If you are not finished, no problem, we will gladly renew your book for you. If you would like to renew your book through our library web page, stop down to the Media Center and we can get you set so that you can do this in the future.
CLUBS AND GROUPS: Key Club will be having their second meeting this Wednesday morning at 7:20am. This is a mandatory all club meeting. If you missed the first Key Club meeting you can still join if you come to this one. The meeting will be in project room 280 this time. Again this is at 7:20 Wednesday morning, in project room 280. Women's Varsity Leadership Club is not dead... I repeat, Women's Varsity Leadership Club is not dead. But, it is changing to Women's Athletic Leadership Club to include all female athletes at this school. Any female athletes at GHS get ready! More is coming and it is going to change the way women's athletics is viewed at GHS! Stay tuned to announcements for more information coming soon! UPCOMING FUNDRAISERS: ATHLETICS: Congrats to the JV and Freshman volleyball teams for going 2-0 at their tris yesterday!
Students, the varsity volleyball team is off to a great start this season. Please come out to support and represent the team at their first conference match against West Ottawa this Thursday at 7pm. Let’s cheer on our Lady Dawgs as they take on the Panthers. GO DAWGS!!! The Grandville Girls Varsity Cross Country team raced in a very strong field of runners at the first OK Red Jamboree on Tuesday. Sophomore Madison Malon led the team with a third place finish overall and a time of 18:47. Senior Audrey Royer finished in 24th with a time of 20:32, with Senior Alaina Carpenter close behind in 33rd with a time of 21:10. Junior Grace Hoekema (22:11) finished 44th. Junior Jenna Brewer (22:14) finished 46th, with Senior Isabella Moayer (22:17) right behind in 47th. Senior Amaya Hagler rounded out the top 7 in 57th place with a time of 23:25. Senior Natalie Mateju ran a lifetime PR with a time of 23:36. The girls get a little break from racing before heading to the Otsego Invitational next weekend. The Grandville Girls JV Cross Country team ran hard at the first OK-Red Jamoree on Tuesday. Leading the team was freshman Kaylee Scott with a 14th place finish and a time of 22:52. Junior Grace Kaminski finished in 31st with a time of 23:52. Junior Sawyer Haisma finished in 37th with a lifetime PR of 24:07, with Erin Walski right behind in 39th and a time of 24:17. Senior Sierra Hamil was in 43rd with a time of 24:31, followed by Freshman Halle Oczepek in 55th with a time of 25:00 and Sophomore Alex Webster in 56th also with a time of 25:00. Running season best times were Kiersen Korienek (25:05), Alexis DeMaar (25:54), and Alyssa Perez (28:20). The Men's Varsity Cross Country Team finished in 7th place at the first OK Red Jamboree held at West Ottawa yesterday. Sophomore Zach Theeuwes led the way with a 6th place finish and a time of 16:45. The trio of senior Jack Gumieny, sophomore Isaiah Salguero, and junior Bryce Wright came in 42nd, 44th, and 45th place respectively. Jack ran an 18:27, Isaiah ran an 18:37and Bryce ran an 18:38. The trio of senior Gavin Tucker, freshman Bernardo Saldivar, and junior Zach Shidey came in 59th through 61. Gavin ran a 19:20, Bernardo a 19:22, and Zach ran a 19:24. Next up for the Bulldogs is the Cougar/Falcon Invitational on Saturday. The Men's Junior Varsity Cross Country Team came in 6th place at the 1st OK Red Jamboree yesterday at West Ottawa. Leading the way was junior Jaden Gorsh with a personal best time of 19:30 and a 20th place finish. Sophomore Santiago Saldivar ran his first race of the season and ran a 19:35 and came in 26th place. Junior Brett Schuitema came in 37th place place and ran a 20:02. Junior Seth Warren ran a 20:20 and came in 50th place. Senior Casey Wilfong ran his season best time of 20:32 and came in 60th place. Rounding out the top seven were junior Logan Smith and sophomore Adrian Walker. Logan and Adrian came in 65th and 77th place respectively. Logan ran a 20:48 and Adrian ran a 21:19.
