XTRA MILE FILES (pg. 8)

Andrea Forbing hearts: Merritt: Merritt is SO awesome. She enjoys her job SO much! She literally SMILES at the end of her calls and u can tell that she is enjoying the opportunity to help her guests. Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious! Kurt Richardson: Kurt had a persnickety customer that had THOUSANDS of things to order, but had to be off the phone by 7 pm. I feel VERY sorry that he had to go through all of the stress. He kept his cool and kept profusely apologizing to the guest and also continued to keep her on the phone. GREAT JOB! Way to stay calm under pressure! Aiyana Ward: Aiyana really went the extra mile today for me... Each meal time is a challenge for me, as I have a SOY allergy. To eat the fresh salads at lunch, it’s helpful to use dressing. All the GFS bulk dressings have one thing in common: Their # 1 ingredient is SOYBEAN OIL!! To accommodate me, Aiyana offered me a small tub of vinegar to keep tucked away in the fridge. Now I can enjoy those greens with a little extra flavor. (I was getting REALLY sad eating those greens plain) Thanks for making my salad (and my WEEK!). Joe Luciano: Coffee Co: 62.8 lbs Mail Order: 105.6 lbs Bakehouse: 6.6 lbs Service Network: 97.7 lbs Delicatessen: 143.3 lbs Roadhouse: 147 lbs ^^^^ LOOK AT THIS!!!! It’s a testament to the vibe and personality of the Roadhouse. They and their patrons have given the most of all..... CONGRATS!!! Ashini Harris appreciates: Jackie Evers: Jackie E has kindly kept us stocked up with healthy treats and chocolate in the Service Center throughout the holiday season. She is also always ready to respond to requests or questions, and I’m sure that many off-the-wall things are thrown at her every day. Even with the mountain of major duties that she has to climb, Jackie is very conscientious and considerate of each member of the ZMO crew and demonstrates great service to everyone in the building, both regular and holiday staff. I don’t say it or show it often, but I truly admire and appreciate Jackie E every day of the year, but especially during the holidays. Thank you for being so thoughtful and generous! Field (Routes): Field oversees my training with gusto and provided a very supportive environment for trainees. Emily Carroll: Emily has always been helpful during my training with the straddle stacker. Joe (purchasing): Joe goes out of his way to teach things about Zingerman’s. I am really thankful, and it made me want to know more about the different stations @

2

Zingerman’s, both in Mail Order and other businesses. Toni Morell: Toni, knowing of my donut addiction, brought in my absolute (local) favorite cake donuts from Washtenaw Dairy!!! She even let me have first pick. It totally made my day and made my holiday wish come true! Thank you to Jackie for the opportunity to share this wish at our last allstaff meeting. I know people think it is a bit strange to have such an obsession with these circular dough-clouds from heaven, but words fail to describe my sentimental attachment to this food. Donuts were a huge part of my childhood, and they take me back to watching Saturday morning cartoons in my jammies, piled on my parents’ bed with my siblings and the cat. Many thanks again, Toni and Jackie!!! akb (kristin beckett) is bonkers about: calvin miller: Thanks to Calvin for handling all the booths in the FP room on his own this afternoon due to repeated specific requests for the room when he was the only one on. Todd Christopher: The Todd felt that we needed a little protein boost, and served us some of Zingerman’s amazing Cabot cheddar. He even let me know about the waxy outer coating. Deeeeelicious, and just what I needed to get me through the last hour of this wintry day. Thank you! Catherine Chansard: We’ve had Catherine on her toes all day today, and she’s done nothing but give us awesomeness, help, and smiles all day. I seriously don’t think that we could’ve gotten through this crazy Monday as well as we have without her in charge. She is a superstar! Val Neff-Rasmussen: We noticed that there was a little issue with the new secret codes in some of our catalogs recently sent out, and Val pounced on the issue, ripped it to shreds, and quickly gave us a solution for our hungry guests calling in for new orders. Thank you so much for your help, Val! Ashini: I had to ask a lot (A. LOT.) of questions yesterday with a few order issues, and Ashini helped me out a ton! I love the patience, the knowledge, and how friendly she is in answering all of my questions! I always feel bad asking questions to the busy shift leads, but they never seem like I’m a bother. Thank you so much Catherine! Cole : Cole had a bit of an issue with a guest’s credit card information. He was super patient with the order, and with a little bit of magic, he finally got the order through. Great job, Cole! I know she appreciated all of the effort and service that you gave her, and I appreciate it too! Thank you! karen g, cole, and karen l: Cole and my two Karens did a fantastic job today, giving great service to all of our gift givers and hungry guests. Chris Melcher: Chris bought a bunch of different cheeses from the Booty Bin, and encouraged us, her podmates, to sample them all during our evening meal. Not only was this very generous on her part, it allowed many of us to get our first taste of several varieties of Zingerman’s Creamery cheeses. Thanks so much, Chris! M Fooy: My friend Rob had always been a little skeptical of Ann Arborites’ love of Zingerman’s; he jokingly described it as \”cultlike\”. But after I sent him the 20% off coupon, he decided to try it out, and was really impressed with how nice Merritt and Steve were to him on the phone. She did not hesitate or roll her eyes when I would scribble a new product down and was very patient with me. I really really appreciate it. shanell: I was desperately jonesin’ for a soda. Coke to be exact. I only had one thought in mind during this slow night. I MUST FEED MY ADDICTION. Sadly, I only had $0.85 on me for the machine. I thought coffee would replace this mighty need...I was wrong. Each sip was a cry of agony as I am not a coffee drinker. I was desperate. Then, Shanell came to my rescue with not $0.40, but $0.50!! It was like a ray of hope came beaming from this woman, she heard my cries for help and reached into her beautiful coin purse and presented me with salvation. Thank you, Shanell. Thank you. Lat, Kathy, and Brent: So, I get migraines about twice a month - tops. When I walked into work it started to kick in. I was dealing with it, but happened to mention it while waiting for a chair to open up in Mail Order. Standing with me were Bryant, Lat, and Kathy. With their help, they convinced me to not wait a moment longer to grab my medicine from my car and stop the migraine before it got worse. I was more than willing to wait until a chair opened up, but their quick thinking might have really helped me. So while I’m still waiting for it to kick in, I really appreciate their persistence and care for me. It really made me feel accepted by my coworkers (not that it’s been an issue). Kaile, Todd, Cam, and Mitch: Kaile, Todd, Cam, and Mitch are wonderful people who offered reassurance, laughs, and any help they could to me while my anxiety was kicking in. SMcCoy’s singing praises of: harlowe shannon: Yesterday, in the Eleventh Hour, and deep in the throws of unrelated Code Red Land, Harlowe came to my rescue and sufficiently \\\”PUMPED\\\” >handclap< me up, making a deli call for an obscure Swiss sausage. Harlowe persevered through misspellings and product uncertainty, made a call on my behalf, and even resubmitted a request when the the first try went \\\”a-rye\\\” (day late, sorry Fun Champ). Timo Anderson, ZT - We had an applicant that ended up at ZingTrain because the bus driver told him that Mail Order was over there.  The applicant was only wearing a light coat and it was very cold outside! Timo heard this and offered to drive him over here! Thank you Timo for that Awesome Wonderful External Service! Chris Olsen, BH - One of our Night Drivers, Allan, came back from their route to a dead battery in their car. Chris saw his hood up and jumped right into action! He not only had cables but was more than willing to help Allan get his car started and on the road. Thanks Chris! Caitlin and Carolyn, RH - Today I had a monster delivery that combined partners group as well as a ZingTrain seminar. Partners group alone can be a big stressor for me simply because

there’s so much to do at ZingTrain, once I’m able to get in, to have it set up and ready to go by 7:30. Doubling it up with a ZingTrain morning seminar had me brainstorming in overdrive as to how I could get 2 buffets set-up and looking beautifully delicious in under an hour. Caitlin immediately relieved me of all my stresses by volunteering to do the pack-up, delivery and set-up with me. And then I got a double bonus when she told me that Carolyn would meet us at ZingTrain to led an extra set of hands. It was by far one of the smoothest set-ups I’ve ever had due to their help. We were all done way ahead of schedule and it ended up being the least stressful delivery ever instead of the most stressful! I couldn’t not have done it without Caitlin and Carolyn jumping in and helping out Jackie Evers, ZMO - Jackie walked in like the godess Diana with her many spoils. Bring not only candy which I’m told is good for the soul but fruit of many assortments. This made not only my day but the day of everyone around. We so appreciate this and we love that Jackie cares and takes care of us.

ROCKIN’ THE HUNGRY Results for Food Gatherers

THE BIG NEWS: Food Gatherers met their ambitious ONE MILLION meal goal, making this year’s campaign the most successful Rockin’ for the Hungry ever!! Not only was it the most successful Rockin’, it was the most successful fundraising event in FG history.

Hey y’all, Sorry for the long delay, but here are the numbers of pounds that you collected for Food Gatherers’ Rockin’ for the Hungry in November and early December in your businesses:

Coffee Co:

62.8 lbs

Mail Order:

105.6 lbs

Why do this during the winter time, and call it “freezin’ for a reason”?

Bakehouse:

6.6 lbs

So others don’t have to. 56% of the families Food Gatherers serves had to decide between paying for food and heat in the last year. We Michiganders know just how rough winter can be. We want our neighbors to have warm homes and full pantries.

Service Network:

97.7 lbs

Delicatessen:

143.3 lbs

Roadhouse:

147 lbs

Appreciatively, Robby + Your Volunteering Workgroup

GRAND TOTAL:

563 lbs of food & supplies! WOW! That’s nine pounds more than last year’s gangbusters number!!!Thank you to all the ZCoBbers who made this possible and contributed with your food, time, and spirit.

THE ZINGPATH PROGRAM Zingerman’s has partnered with Pathways to Success Academy to create a “school-to-work” internship program we are calling ZingPath! This is an exciting program in its first year. We have about a dozen students in the program and they are finishing up orientation in January. They will be ready to go to work in February - look out for these amazing folks joining your teams soon!

What is Pathways to Success Academy? • Pathways is an alternative high school located in Ann Arbor. • There are about 180 students that attend this school. • The school provides more flexible and personalized education, class schedules and support for the students. • Many of these students were on a “path” filled with extra challenges and obstacles, but are now on a different “path” where many are now dual enrolled at WCC and will soon graduate!

INTERNAL SERVICE STAR Tiffany Bon, Roadhouse Nominated by: Joe Luciano

Tiffany, where do I begin.  Each book written is only so long and I too only have so much space to write this code green.  WOW GIRL, DAMN!!!!!!  YOU ROCKIN\’ IT.  You’re incredible. I know scheduling a group of hooligans like us who work at the roadhouse is no small task week in and week out.  Needless to say the scheduling around holiday request must be as if you’re climbing Everest (all 29,029 feet of it).  And I am so happy to see you scale this multiple time with a constant smile on your face and a little skip in each step. What blows me away even more is that you constantly are giving off an infectious energy of 10! Mark it down Ari, yes a 10!!!!  You make my day, no, you\’re the best part of my day.  Thank you Tiffany for all that you do.

EXTERNAL SERVICE STAR

James Christie

Nominated by: Caitlyn Doyle

As a bride, one stresses over all the things that could go wrong at the wedding.  Spilling cabernet on her dress during cocktail hour.  Stumbling while walking down the isle.  Will the guests like the food?  Will the florist finish set up on time?  All of these little concerns and worries add up to building the most perfect day for her, the groom and their 100+ guests coming from across the country. On December 5th, 2015, a Zingerman’s employee and talented soul was what every bride-to-be could hope for in a wedding crisis. It was about an hour and a half before the ceremony was to start and the guests were about to arrive on shuttles within the hour.  Everything so far had been going well, the rehearsal, the set up, hair, makeup, you name it, it was going smooth.  The mother of the groom comes up to me and says “We have a problem”.  It turned out while the pastor was coming to the Farm he got in a small fender bender and was a bit shook up.  He was ok but he would not be able to come back to perform the wedding.  She had asked me if there was a way for me to print out the

wedding ceremony notes because they were trying to find another officiate and needed some hard copies.  I said of course. I walked over to the bride and was listening to a few conversations happening around her.  Everybody was pretty calm and collected even with this potential disaster brewing.  I hear several folks suggest officiates and start making calls. I chime in and say that I was going to start calling my favorite officiates as well to have on stand by. The first person that came to my mind was James Christie. I knew he usually works Saturday evening but thought it was worth a shot.  He answered his phone immediately and listened to my blabbering of the situation.  He replied “Yes, I can do it”.  With a weight lifted, I sent him the ceremony to read over before he headed over. I went back to the bride and family and told them I had a confirmed officiate on his way right now. They had hit dead end after dead end with their search so they were over the moon relived. About 45 minutes later I see James’ blue Honda roll up the main driveway.  His tall slender features pop out of the drivers seat.  He was dressed in a full suit with an ocean blue collared shirt for just a bit of color.  He looked incredible. I introduced him to the bride, groom and family.  With his large smile and twinkling eyes all the family was thrilled he was there but still a bit apprehensive to see the outcome. It was getting close to the start time and we were lining up the wedding party.  James and the groomsman were in the staging room to walk into the wedding.  With an assuring face James said “Let’s do this” and they all walked in together.  I stood in that staging room and didn’t want to leave until I absolutely had to.  James’ voice filled the room with warmth, confidence and love.  He followed the scripted planned ceremony the couple wrote to the T. He married them in front of all of their friends and family just like they had wanted and planned.  No one would have guessed that he wasn’t the original pastor than and help write and plan the ceremony. After the ceremony I went to talk to the Father of the Bride.  I was a bit nervous because he was a very religious man and was excited for their original pastor.  I asked him how the ceremony went. He began to tear up

and said “It was better than I could have ever imagined.  James was incredible.” He paused looking at me and said “His voice….mmm….His voice…It just filled the room.   How does that happen?” At that point I knew that James did not just save the wedding but he created an even better experience and memory than what the guests were planning, expecting and even dreamed of.  If that is not the definition of an extra mile or creating an evergreen I do not know what it.  I will never forget the day when James Christie stepped in to save the wedding day.  Even I a stranger to these guests have a warm heart witnessing these turn of events.  Thank you James.  You are one special soul that I am very lucky to know.

EVERGREEN AWARD

Carly Petrovich, Bakehouse Nominated by: Patrick Adie

Sent to bhweb email:  “I just wanted to send a special thank you note to Carly in at the Bakehouse and to recognize her for the outstanding service in handling my lost iPad recently over the weekend. She engaged in a nice conversation with us at the Bakehouse counter as we discussed our first purchase of your famous Langosh.Carly remembered that we were going to take it down to the coffeehouse. I didn’t even know that I left it on the counter when I paid for the items. She followed us to the Coffeehouse and looked to see if the lost iPad was ours. She approached my husband fist who was seated but he didn’t even recognize the iPad since it’s mine and he didn’t even know I had it on me... Carly didn’t give up and walked up to me at the coffee counter and asked me as well. Of course I acknowledged it was mine!.....I was so surprised to see her bring my iPad as I didn’t even notice it missing. The sense of relief and appreciation that I experienced at that moment cannot be expressed in words.  I am very grateful for Carly’s effort to find me and her persistence to never give up! It’s such a wonderful feeling when I walk into a Zingerman’s facility knowing that your employees go over and beyond, exceeding our expectations as customers!  Thanks for your continuous service and for investing in your employees. This truly makes our shopping experience worth it!”
