“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Sir Richard Steele TCHS Summer Reading Requirements 2017 Dear TCHS parents and students: In order to promote both reading skills and pleasure in reading, the Timothy Christian Schools Summer Reading Program requires each student to read at least two books during the summer. Requirements concerning these books vary from class to class and grade to grade, so read the information below that pertains to the grade and class the student will be entering to learn that level’s requirements. Students must turn in a parental or guardian signature form to receive credit for reading each free choice book. After July 1, study helps and information related to the required books will be posted on the website. We believe that reading is an important life skill that supports the overall mission of Timothy Christian Schools to graduate “academically prepared Christian disciples.” We want our students to read well and to be well-read. The more students read, the better able they will be to choose and enjoy literature throughout their lives. Summer Reading Guidelines 1. English 9 and 9Honors - ALL incoming freshmen and freshmen honors must read two books: The Call of the Wild, by Jack London (ISBN: 9781507814987) and a book of their choice. A description of the book from amazon.com: The Call of the Wild, considered by many London's greatest novel, is a gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man’s world and returning to nature. Adventure and dog-story enthusiasts as well as students and devotees of American literature will find this classic work a thrilling, memorable reading experience.
The book of choice must be of an appropriate age and reading level for the student; the book should not have been read before. 2. But his contentment is disturbed when Bilbo reluctantly joins a quest to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug, the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. “A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.” – New York Times Book Review

Verification forms will not be accepted after Friday, August 18st.
