School crossing guards urgently needed in Georgetown and Acton Permanent and Standby opportunities available HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town of Halton Hills is looking for community-minded people to work as crossing guards in locations in Georgetown and Acton. “Crossing guards play an important role in ensuring the safety of children everyday through our Town, but unfortunately we have a shortage at this time and are having difficulty attracting people to the role,” said Dick Spear, Superintendent of Public Works. Crossing guards are required to escort school children across a roadway safely at designated school crossing locations in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Town of Halton Hills guidelines. Responsibilities include: • Obey all established traffic safety regulations to ensure pedestrians (going to and from school) are assisted in crossing roadways at designated locations • Wear safety equipment (e.g. safety vest and reflective armbands) supplied by the Corporation of the Town of Halton Hills at all times while on duty • Report and document any incidents or accidents involving traffic and/or pedestrians to the supervisor and appropriate police or school officials The position requires the following qualifications: • Community minded citizen of good character who is fit/alert, dependable and understands kids • An acceptable Security Clearance Request certificate from Halton Police Services at applicant's expense • Good communication skills, including verbal and listening with the ability to follow directions and procedures • Must be alert, able to maintain high degree of mental concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a safe distance (approx.300 feet) • Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections, reacting safely and quickly to traffic • Must be able to perform duties outside in all diverse weather conditions

Permanent positions are required for two one-hour shifts per day, M-F, with a pay rate of $16.98 per hour/shift. Standby positions are required on an as-needed basis (on-call) with a pay rate of $16.98 per hour/shift. Mr. Spear said the role is ideal for retirees or others with flexible schedules and will be required to work in diverse weather conditions.
