The latter cater for our specific needs, say, for food, shelter, clothing and ornament. Builders, weavers and jewellers are therefore of obvious value to society. But the making, contemplation and appreciation of works of art relate to our attitudes, states of being and cognitive/affective capacities. By creating a work of art the artiste gets the deep, inner delight of effective self-expression which he cannot possibly equate with any other gain. As for the rasikas, they too can benefit richly from contemplation of works of art. It is an admitted fact that aesthetic experience relieves tensions and checks destructive impulses, refines perception and develops imagination and along with it the ability to put oneself in the place of others, which is so essential even for the maintenance of good inter-personal relations in daily life.
