Food for Thought... Turkey Meat: “Dark vs. White”

Turkey is a great source of protein. White turkey meat has less calories than dark turkey meat and is considered lean. The dark turkey meat gets its color from myoglobin (my‐o‐glo‐bin) which carries and stores oxygen in muscles. The muscles that are more ac ve (which are legs for turkey) need more oxygen and will be darker in color compared to the rest of the turkey meat that appears white. While dark meat may have more calories, it is higher in nutrients like iron, zinc, and folate. So how much turkey should you eat? A serving size is about 3 ounces which is equal to the size of a deck of cards. The daily recommenda on for protein varies by age and ac vity level.
