It is already the end of the first quarter and time for Parent-Teacher conferences. Please actively participate in your children’s Parent-Teacher conferences and share any questions or suggestions that you may have with your child’s teachers. This is very helpful in developing school-parent partnerships and for providing a high-quality education for all of our students.

During the 2016-2017 school year, Orient-Macksburg Community Schools began to implement the state-mandated Teacher Leadership initiative. The following goals were identified for O-M’s Teacher Leadership program: Aligning instruction with the Common Core Curriculum Differentiating instruction to better meet students’ needs Incorporating 21st Century Skills, including technology, to develop productive citizens Fostering interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and resiliency To address these goals, the following five leadership positions were established: 1) Social emotional leader, 2) Reading strategist, 3) Technology integrationist, 4) Instructional strategist/Classroom management, and 5) Mentor teacher. These leadership roles are held this year respectively by: Shelley Bakerink, Belinda Lindley, Katie Geidel, Samantha Thompson, and Laura Stearns. This school year, Teacher Leadership personnel are paired up with teachers and they will work collaboratively to set a goal, or goals, in an area in which the teacher would like to focus. TLC leaders will have two half-days per month, with a substitute teacher provided, to observe in classrooms, provide feedback, model in classrooms, conference with teachers, provide resources, and monitor teachers’ progress toward their goals. Twice during the school year, teachers will have the opportunity to evaluate the impact of the TLC program and provide suggestions. In addition, assessment data from Iowa Assessments, MAP, and AimsWeb will be used to monitor the TLC program’s impact on student learning. The ultimate goal of the TLC program is to help teachers improve the quality of their instruction and to raise the levels of student proficiency. For additional information, please visit: https://sites.google.com/o-mschools.org/tlc I would like to wish all of the Orient-Macksburg Community School’s students, parents, and community members a blessed Thanksgiving!
