LOVING THE TAXMAN

Pastor David Beatty | Sunday, April 23, 2017 Luke 19:1-10 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. 4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. 6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. 8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

INTRODUCTION _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Publicans: Jews who made their living by contracting with the Roman government to collect taxes on their own people. They were considered traitors who became wealthy by collaborating with Roman authorities at the expense of their own people.

I SHOULD DUTIFULLY PAY ____________________ Even if it is unfair, even if you could spend it better, even if it is spent on activities that violate my conscience. 1. Because government is established by God 1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Rom 13:1

2. Because I represent a higher power 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. Rom 13:5 14 … Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? 15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? …bring me a penny, that I may see it. 16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's. 17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. Mark 12

3. Because I live under their rule 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ I SHOULD BE AROUND PEOPLE WHO ________________ I am commanded to think like Jesus (Phil 2:5), feel like Jesus (Col 3:15), and I act like Jesus (Col 3:17). We’re not hermits, we’re ambassadors. 1. Because I am prone to stereotypes 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice

in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: Luke 18:10-14

2. Because I need to understand uncommon love For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Matt 5:46-47

3. Because I can make a big difference 31 …The publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. Matt 21:31-32

4. Because they need hope and healing 10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Matthew 9:10-11

_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ I SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN ______________________ 8 …Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. Luke 19:8 Randian Capitalist – Acquisition of wealth and power that is motivated by greed, self-interest and pride regardless of the outcome.

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth Luke 12:15 Moral Capitalist – Understands that money is not an end to itself, but is to be acquired morally and used to benefit others. Christian Capitalist - Constantly look for ways to transfer their wealth from temporal returns to eternal rewards. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: Mat 6:19

Commitments of a Christian Capitalist 17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 1. I will never be arrogant with my money 2. I will not put my faith in my investments but in God 3. I will pursue good works to exemplify Christ 4. I will always be ready to thoughtlessly give to others 5. I will look for ways to partner with others for eternity
