CULTIVATING CONTENTMENT in a Consumerist Culture Pastor David Beatty | Sunday, July 30, 2017 1 Timothy 6:6-10 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

INTRODUCTION _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ THREE MONEY MYTHS Myth #1: ______________________ is my divine right How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of his hands. Job 34:19

Myth #2: It’s my _____________________ ! Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above… James 1:17

Myth #3: Money is ______________________ For the love of money is the root of all evil: 1 Timothy 6:10 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

1. I MUST ____________________ CONTENTMENT But godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6

Covetousness: _______________________________________ Contentment: ________________________________________ - Living below your means The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7

- Provide for basic necessities For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 1 Timothy 6:7-8

_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 2. I MUST TEACH THE ________________OF HARD WORK The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. Proverbs 13:4

- Work is more valuable than a handout For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

- Work is a gift to be enjoyed not endured And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Genesis 2:15 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings: he shall not stand before mean men. Proverbs 2:29

3. I MUST INSTILL GOOD MONEY ____________________ Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Cor 4:2

Four bad spending habits: 1. Impulsive – “I don’t need to make a decision on this right now.” 2. Compulsive – “I don’t need to spend money every time I’m out.” 3. Special interest – “I don’t need the newest and latest.” 4. Status seeking – “I don’t need to gain status in others’ eyes through the things I own.”

- Teach ____________________ I have shewed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35 Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: Proverbs 3:9

- Teach ____________________ Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. Proverbs 27:23 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Proverbs 24:3-4

- Teach ____________________ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. Proverbs 21:20

- Teach ____________________ And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. Luke 15:13-14
