Course Rationale: It is the California state mandated policy that every high school student takes two years of Physical Education. The Sweetwater Union High School District follows this requirement and lessons are revolved around state standards. Prerequisites: ● Did not pass at least 5 out of 6 components of the Spring 2014 FITNESSGRAM Course Description: This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn through a comprehensive sequentially planned Physical Education program in accordance with the California Model Content Standards for Physical Education. Students will be empowered to make choices that enable them to meet challenges and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness and movement activity for a lifetime. In Fitness for Life, emphasis is placed on students developing a personalized fitness program for a healthy lifestyle. Units of instruction include: personal fitness concepts and techniques, cardiorespiratory, endurance training, strength training, strength and flexibility conditioning, nutrition, combatives, gymnastics/tumbling, and team activities. The effects of physical activity on dynamic health and the mechanics of the body movement are integrated throughout the school year. Students are to be prepared to dress out and participate on Monday, July 25, 2016. Preparation includes: ● ● ● ● ●

O.H.S. Physical Education Dress Code is: Either Olympian grey T- shirt and black shorts (available at the A.S.B) OR traditional scoop neck plain grey T-shirt, plain black shorts/ sweatpants and athletic shoes. (On cold days, students may wear sweatshirts in plain school colors only). Athletic wear should not be altered or see through. This includes no tank tops and muscle shirts. Quality combination lock 1 inch binder, dividers, pen, pencil, laptop. Personal hygiene items: anti-perspirant, deodorant, towel, etc.

College Preparation ~ “Habits of Mind” and “College Readiness Skills” In addition to the Physical Education content of this course, an emphasis will be placed on developing college readiness. This will be accomplished by promoting the following “Habits of Mind” for success in college-level course work: 1) building intellectual perseverance, the persistent pursuit of knowledge, by promoting the value of a strong work ethic and cultivating sustained effort through repeated practice, 2) developing metacognition by encouraging thinking about the quality of one’s own and others’ thought processes, practicing intellectual humility, and becoming comfortable with the discomfort of ambiguity, and 3) creating intellectual curiosity and rigorous engagement by fostering a desire to know and requiring inquiry and investigation. In order to be successful in college and post-secondary work, students must attain certain literacy skills. The “College Readiness Literacy Skills” that will be emphasized during this course will be: 1) describing using discipline-specific academic language, 2) summarizing by distinguishing the main idea from supporting detail, 3) relating/applying the appropriate tools/processes to new

Olympian High School Fitness For Life situations, 4) analyzing in order to understand the nature of complex material, 5) synthesizing in order to develop new insights, and 6) evaluating according to a set of standards or criteria. Student Expectations (Participation): ● Attend all classes on time. Students are to be sitting in roll call order before the teacher comes out to class. ● Students are expected to be actively engaged in every class period while following directions in a safe, productive and ●

responsible manner. ALL students will be responsible for completing assignments/tasks, participating in make-up sessions, and retaking any assessments missed in order to maintain good standing in class. Also, students must keep track of their grade on infinite.sweetwaterschools.org and address any concerns immediately. Citizenship- Failure to not meet behavior expectations can result in a lowered citizenship grade. Examples of behavior expectations are, but not limited: Doing what the teacher asks you to do, not talking while the teacher is talking, not causing a panic among student, and not being defiant to anyone in class or in the locker room.

Absences: Students who miss class are responsible for the material missed and need to get the assignment before or the 1st day upon return from their absence. Students have one week from the day they return back to class to turn in or make up the assignment missed. Your teacher cannot grade you if you are not in class, and therefore it is crucial that you make up your daily points. Please be responsible for your grade. Homework Policy: Physical Education class will periodically have homework. There will be long term projects and a 6 week fitness plan the students will be working on. The 6 week fitness plan will be an analysis of a client’s physical fitness levels. This will include the importance of cardiovascular fitness, analysis of upper body strength, flexibility, and trunk extension strength. It will also include a current fitness level, goals to improve overall health, and activities to promote lifelong fitness. All writing assignments will be in MLA format. Assessments: ● Formative Assessment - are to provide time, practice, and opportunities for learning, along with feedback or checkpoints regarding your progress in the learning process. Examples will include student demonstrations, peer teaching and evaluation, direct questioning, and active recall. ● Summative Assessments - determine your personal achievements. These assessments demonstrate what you have learned at the end of a period and are used to establish grades. Examples will include assessments like tests, formal writing activities, projects, team teaching, and cooperative skills. ● Projects or other activities that assist the student’s understanding of the concepts being studied. (Note: Parents should ask to see student’s daily work and homework.)

Grading Policy: To keep the lines of communication open between parents, students and teachers, grades will be posted on line through infinite.sweetwaterschools.org. Further instructions will soon follow and you should be able to see grades within 2-3 weeks, if not before.

Olympian High School Fitness For Life Student’s grades will be a reflection of their level of achievement in the state standards. A (90 – 100%) - Advanced ~ works beyond the standards, B (80 – 89%) - Proficient ~ meets the standards, C (70 – 79%) - Basic ~ below, but progressing toward meeting the standards, D (60 – 69%) - Below Basic ~ well below the standards. F (59% and below) – Far Below Basic ~ displays minimal to no progress toward the standards A student’s scholarship grade will be determined by the following categorical breakdown: Participation/Daily points = 20% Aerobics = 20% Flexibility/Muscular Endurance = 20% Unit Summative Assessments= 20% Writing Assignments/Projects = 10 % Final/EOC = 10 % TOTAL = 100% Participation/Daily Points: Each Physical Education period, a student can earn up to 5 points on a period day and 10 points on a block day. Points are based on dressing out appropriately (including shoes), participation in class activities (including fitness videos, team sports and daily fitness tasks), team work, warm- ups & stretching, and safety. Disruptive, unsafe behavior will result in a 2 day class suspension. Students will lose points accordingly if they do not complete any of the above. -4 points = non suit (The ONLY time a student would be excused from not dressing out would be as a result of a doctor’s orders). -3 points = partial non suit -2 to 4 points = lack of participation -2 to 4 points = lack of team work -2 points = not participating in the warm up or stretching incorrectly -5 or 10 points (depending on if it is a period or block day) = student puts others in harm’s way -5 or 10 points (depending on if it’s a period or block day) = ABSENCES Sequential Consequences to not dressing out: 1st = warning 2nd = phone call home and/ or referral to the counseling office 3rd = phone call home and referral to the assistant principal

Locker Room Policy All students are expected to use the locker room to store their school supplies and valuables as well as their school clothes. If a student is not dressing out, does not have a lock, or is a behavior nuisance, they will be suspended from all locker room privileges and not be allowed entrance until the issue is resolved through the assistant principal. If students are caught taking pictures of themselves or others in the locker room or teachers are told by students that they are taking pictures of themselves or others in the locker room, will result of the phone taken away and an immediate referral to the office.

Olympian High School Fitness For Life

Tardy to class Students have a 7 minute passing period to walk to their Physical Education class. ***Students must be on their roll call number to not be considered tardy. If the student is not, their teacher will mark them tardy. 2 tardies will result in no higher than a “C” as their citizenship grade 3 tardies will result in no higher than an “F” as their citizenship grade Tardies can be made up in ATP, early school or Saturday school. It is up to each student to communicate their make up plans with their teacher. Medical Policy Students are expected to participate in all activities. If providing a note from parent or doctor, please indicate what activities the student is capable of participating in. Parent note is good for 1day and must go through the nurse. Any assignments missed due to the note, must be made up. -

-

Students must give ALL doctors notes to the nurse prior to their Physical Education class. The nurse will then give the student a note to which they are to give the teacher. The teacher will not accept any notes directly from the doctor. It must go through the nurse first. Chronic medical will be handled on a case by case basis. Students must let the teacher know if they have any allergies, asthma, or any other condition that would affect their participation in PE. These must be communicated by the end of the first week of school or upon knowledge of such conditions.

Mastery Model: At Olympian High School, it is our belief that: ➢ All students can achieve at high levels ➢ Not all students learn at the same rate ➢ ➢

All learning targets are clear and transparent All assessments meet district standards

➢ ➢

Deep understanding or higher levels of proficiency are achieved only as a result of trial, practice and adjustments based on feedback and more practice Students learn more when their school/teacher offers timely, directive and systematic interventions that guarantee them

additional time and support when they experience difficulty Re-teaching and re-assessment opportunities provide student access to mastery (and teach perseverance)

Therefore, the Mastery Model requires that if a student receives less than 70% on any summative performance, or drops below 70% on their participation grade, they will attend the Academic Tutorial Period make-up sessions until they have improved their performance to the level of college readiness. In P.E., all students are given the opportunity to have one make up per test.
