Steamboat Springs is located in the Rocky Mountains, 157 miles northwest of Denver. At an altitude of 6700 ft., Steamboat is a recreation-oriented community with ranching and coal mining contributing to its economy. Students are influenced by a highly educated and economically diverse community, a growing community college and a population that stresses physical activity and outdoor awareness. 19% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch, 17% of the student population represent minority ethnicities, 29% of district households have children, 97% of adult population are high school graduates, and 61% of adult population have college degrees.
The School:
Current enrollment in the high school is 773 students in grades 9 through 12. With a teaching staff of 57, class size varies from 8 to 33 students. The high school has a rotating block schedule. Students attend classes 1-4 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 58 Tuesdays and Thursdays, and all classes on Fridays. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors take 7 classes each semester. 51 Certified faculty work with SSHS each day. Of those, 63% have a master’s degree, and 1 holds doctorate degrees.
Graduation Requirements:
To receive a Steamboat Springs High School diploma in 2016, graduates must earn a minimum of 25 credits. These requirements are as follows: Required Language Arts 4 credits Speech .5 credits Science 3 credits Mathematics 2 credits* Social Studies 3 credits Physical Education 1.5 credits Fine Arts 1 credit Business/Car. & Tech 2 credits Financial Literacy .5 credits World Language 1 credit Electives 6.5 electives Total Credits 25 credits *Students must also demonstrate math proficiency with a C or above to earn credit and pass a math proficiency exam.
Class of 2016 College Attendance
77% of the class of 2016 attended college: of that group, 70% attended a four-year college, and 6.8% attended a two-year college, 15% are participating in a gap year program. 53% of the class of 2015 attended a Colorado college or Univ., and 47% went to an out-of-state institution.
The Curriculum:
Advanced Placement courses are offered in English Literature, English Composition, American History, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics 1 and 2, French, Spanish, Computer Science and Art during the 2016-2017 school year. These classes are open to all students, but due to scheduling are most accessible to juniors and seniors. SSHS was awarded AP Honor Roll award in 2016. # of AP courses students took in 2015-2016 9th grade- 0 11th grade-116 th 10 grade- 23 12th grade- 217 2016 AP Results: 139 students took 258 exams with a 70% receiving a 3 or higher 2015 AP Results: 144 students took 238 tests with a 68% receiving a 3 or higher Advanced Classes: Advanced classes are offer in 9th grade Language Arts, 10th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. Classes are not weighted and open to all students. Weighted Courses graded on a 5-point scale, are identified on student transcripts with an asterisk (*). These courses are more academically rigorous than the regular courses. College Courses: Through a partnership with Colorado Mountain College, students can take college courses as a part of their high school schedule. Only the college courses that meet the concurrent enrollment agreement are placed on the high school transcripts. Diploma with Emphasis: Students may earn a Diploma with Emphasis in business, computer technology, engineer technology, fine arts, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and world language. For this achievement, students must: take a rigorous series of classes, maintain a certain GPA in the discipline and meet other specific requirements.

Important to note that the ACT scores are only reflective of the COACT and not all ACT tests taken by SSHS students in 2015-2016. The COACT is taken by every junior. It is the same ACT test as the ACT that is open to all students on Saturday administrations throughout the year.
