Romans—Part 17
November 5/6, 2016 Romans 3:20-25
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Can a mere human have a right relationship with a God who is perfectly holy (Job 9:2)? 2) 3:21 We want to earn; God will only give. God’s way of providing righteousness has nothing to do with human performance. 3) 3:21 God holds before man the standards of His righteousness, demonstrating the impossibility of keeping it. Because of that inability, “the Law brings about wrath” (Romans 4:15). 4) 3:22 The righteousness of God is not only apart from works, but is available only one way…faith. 5) 3:22 Saving faith involves the exercise of will and the emotions (Romans 6:17).
11) 3:24 Only the sinless Savior could pay the price to redeem sinful men. 12) 3:25 Christ on the cross is the sacrifice that satisfies the righteous nature of God. God brings a just sentence of death upon all, for all have sinned. He then provides a sinless sacrifice, to atone for the unrighteousness of the wayward human race whom He dearly loves. From God’s standpoint forgiveness is freely offered. All that remains is for people to accept that forgiveness. The obligation is to believe, to trust in the redemptive work of Christ. GREEK WORDS Hustereō—fall short; the basic meaning of being last or inferior Dikaioō—justified; to declare the rightness of something or someone Apolutrōsis—redemption; idea of delivering, especially by means of paying a price
6) 3:22 In His life Jesus demonstrated God’s righteousness by living a sinless life. In His death He demonstrated God’s righteousness by paying for the unrighteousness of every human. In His resurrection He proved God’s righteousness by coming forth from the grave with power. 7) 3:23 By choosing something other than God, Adam and Eve sacrificed relationship with God and therefore determined the essential nature of everyone born into the human race (Genesis 3). 8) 3:23 Just as no one is good enough to be saved, no one is so evil that he cannot be saved. Just as everyone apart from Christ is equally sinful, everyone who is in Christ is equally righteous. 9) 3:24 Justification is God’s declaration that all the demands are fulfilled for the believer through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. 10) 3:24 One of humanity’s most difficult tasks is to accept righteousness as a gift.
