Vendor Approval Update Not all virtual courses are created the same. With virtual providers proliferating and rigorous national and State-Board approved standards, the array of options can be overwhelming and, for some schools, difficult to navigate. Like the textbook adoption process, the approval process is intended to ensure access to a variety of high-quality, standardsbased courses from vendors and providers all over the country, while lowering costs by eliminating the need for each school or LEA to separately evaluate virtual course products. Vendors include any 3rd-party organization who desires to offer content for purchase for NC school districts to make available for students. The goal of the vendor course approval process is not to limit choices, but to consolidate as many high-quality courses as possible into a menu of options for schools and LEAs. NCVPS invites LEAs and schools to identify virtual learning courses necessary to meet the needs of their students. Through partnership with LEAs and schools, NCVPS can better serve the needs of all students and the state may achieve some benefit through cost consolidation and state-level agreements. The Review Process: The process only applies to first time, teacher-led courses. By teacher-led, we mean that the Vendor provides the teacher to deliver the instruction for the course. To be eligible for approval, a course must meet criteria in the following areas as determined by standards from International Association for K-12 Online Learning and the Southern Regional Educational Board: 1. Course Quality (5 Standards, 52 total Review Items) 2. Teacher Quality (10 Standards, 62 total Review Items) The review occurs in two phases: Phase 1 evaluates the course based upon alignment to NC state standards (Course Quality—8 total review items) and whether teacher is highly qualified and NC state certified (Teacher Quality-5 total review items). When a vendor meets approval at Phase 1, the course moves to Phase 2, where the course undergoes a full review (which includes the 4 remaining Course Quality Standards, and 9 remaining Teacher Quality Standards) Vendor Course Approval Data
