Evangelical Lutheran Church in America God’s work. Our hands.

March 2015 Dear friends, Here are a few things on my heart and mind these days: 1). When Winston Churchill planned his funeral he included a bugler positioned high in the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral in England. After the benediction the bugler played “Taps” signaling that the service was over. But Churchill included a surprise at the end of the service. In another location, high in the dome, was a second bugler. When the first bugler had finished playing “Taps,” the second played “Reveille.” It was time to get up and get going. Winston Churchill’s testimony was that history would not end with “Taps,” but with “Reveille.” No matter how great the past has been there’s always something that can take its place. Normally we want to hold on to the “good old days.” But it’s only in letting go that something new and maybe even better can take its place. That’s what resurrection is all about. Before Jesus could be resurrected, he had to die. There could be no new life, eternal life, without the end of the old life. Jesus could not be fully known in the future without the experience of the cross. He died rejected and defeated, but rose in glory and victory. Just as Winston Churchill surprised the people of his time with “Reveille,” Jesus surprised people with the resurrection. There’s a new beginning. Death did not have the last word. The resurrection applies to all of life. For me, going to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota (an ELCA church college) for my junior and senior years was a faith-awakening time. It literally changed the course of my life. To change colleges, to end old habits, to let go of things we’re used to shakes us up. It’s rarely easy. Changes in careers, changes in relationships often come with a struggle. That’s where our faith in God enables us to survive. That’s because resurrection is possible for all of us at any time in our lives. When we “die” or “let go” and make new choices anything is possible. But hear this - there will be some rocky moments. Because no matter how hard we try we’ll make mistakes (us and others). After all, we’re human. We’re simply not in control of all the factors that influence us. The resurrection of Jesus reminds us of God’s forgiveness. That God always gives us another chance. That God is a forgiving God, wanting us to continue our life’s journey with hope and newness. God reassures us that throughout this process, God is present. To be sure, we are never alone. I’d like to encourage you to take a few moments now and read a very familiar passage from the Bible Psalm 23. Read it through the lens of what I’ve mentioned in this article about how God accompanies us through all of life. See how the wisdom of this psalm relates with what I’ve been saying in the article. Do this short Bible study by yourself, with your family, or other friends. You might want to underline those portions Page 1

that pertain closely; put a question mark next to a verse or verses that you’re not sure about; write some thoughts down in the margin. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff – they comfort me. You prepare a table me before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.” (Psalm 23 – NSRV) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2). “Footloose” - Little did I know when I became your pastor 10 ½ years ago that we’d have a flourishing musical ministry here at St. Timothy! You should know that at 2 recent East-Central Synod of Wisconsin meetings our musical ministry has been mentioned as an innovative outreach ministry. The Appleton Conference has once again given our theatrical ministry a grant of money because they want to support this important ministry. Please consider joining us for an upcoming performance. By attending, you’ll do the following: + Support your church and many of our members who are part of the cast. + Help St. Timothy continue (70 years and counting) our long tradition of reaching out to our community with the love of Jesus. + See a great performance and enjoy fellowship. So mark your calendars to be here at St. Timothy for at least 1 performance of “Footloose”: + Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. + Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m. + Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. + Saturday, March 21 at 7 p.m. + Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. + Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m. Free-will donations will be gladly received and refreshments will be available for a cost. One more thing – INVITATIONS! INVITE someone to join you for a performance of “Footloose.” And there’s ample reason to do this INVITING! Jesus himself says that we’re called to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). An important step in that is to INVITE others to come to church with us. INVITING someone to worship or a Bible study may be a little scary; INVITING them to a musical performance of “Footloose” is not as much. So here’s your chance: INVITE someone to “Footloose.” Just think, if we had everyone from St. Timothy INVITE just one person, we’d have 600 guests at “Footloose.” Think of what a great time that would be and how we as a church would be fulfilling our mission. Think of the importance that faith and church is to you and your family; don’t we want that for our friends, family, co-workers as well? It’s a big deal! See you in church! Pastor David Skarsten P.S. If you have a St. Timothy t-shirt, wear it to a “Footloose” performance. And if you see someone at “Footloose” you don’t know, welcome them and introduce yourself. We’re all hosts at St. Timothy!

Dear Sunday School Parents, It’s hard to believe but we are more than half way through another successful year of Spirit Sparks Sunday School. Thank you to all of you for sharing your children with us and letting us help guide their spiritual growth. Our confirmation students have been attending Crossways Confirmation Camp for many years. This year our Sunday School offerings, from 3 year old through grade 8, are supporting Confirmation Camp. Our goal is $350, and so far we have collected $82.79 from our student offerings as well as the Birthday Penny Jar. It is our hope to meet or even exceed our goal. We would like to give back to this wonderful organization that has been serving and guiding our children down the path of our Lord. Students in grades Pre-K through 1st grade (and any willing 2nd-5th graders) are scheduled to sing in church the 3rd Sunday of each month. Please mark your calendars so your children will be in church to sing with us. Again, thank you for bringing your children each week to Sunday School and the generous offerings given toward our mission each year. We enjoy and look forward to having your children in class each week. This semester your children are learning all about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Parents who are interested in seeing what we're learning and doing, please feel free to join the class for a week. God Bless! Spirit Sparks Sunday School Teachers

St Timothy Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes: Tuesday, January 20, 2015 Present: Steve Bergner, Jeff Montour, Stephanie Jacobs, Arnie Jones, Sherry Kutchenriter, Mary Rabideau, Ann Powell, Kris Stahl, and Pastor Skarsten Absent: Bob Pawelkiewicz, Jayne Oberstadt, and Len Dessart Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Steve Bergner. A devotion was shared by Mary Rabideau. Last Month's Minutes: M/S/C Sherry Kutchenriter/Mary Rabideau approve the minutes for December 18, 2014. All voting aye. Treasurer's Report: Jeff Montour reviewed the December 2014 Treasurer's budget report which reflects budgeted line items only as noted. M/S/C Stephanie Jacobs/Ann Powell make a motion to approve the Treasurer's report. All voting aye. Finance:  Scrip sales are up $36 from last year (2013) which is good because we also used a lot in 2013 for the kitchen remodel.  We still have not received payments from the impact online shopping. Sherry will follow up.  The mobile app is still not ready, even though it had been promised to be ready in August. Sherry will follow up yet again on this.  Giving statements are available in the Narthex. Please pick them up.  Only $5 was received in December for heating expenses. The Council may want to consider another designation for December 2015 since has been a regular item for December for many years. Giving Tree Designation: February – Crossways Camp; March – office copier paper; April – ELCA synod youth gathering in Detroit Committee Reports Youth: Jeff Montour reported they are still working on looking for someone to fill the young adult volunteer position. Worship  The MacDowell Men’s Choir sang on Sunday, January 18. It was praised by all!  Lenten services are also coming up and preparation has started. Education  Stephanie Jacobs reported we have four youths going to the ELCA gathering. She reported that Bobby Kraus will be the male chaperone for the trip.  A dunk tank will be used as a fundraiser for the trip.  A rummage sale would also be used as a fundraiser for the trip.  One confirmation student has recently been added to that class .  There was discussion around the Sunday school offering and how it is given to the counters. It was noticed that the teachers can find it difficult to gather the offering and ensure it gets to the counters. It was suggested to make an older Sunday school student responsible for that week (to collect the money from each class and deliver to the counters). This takes the concern off the teachers and gives more responsibility to the students.  A Sunday school meeting will be held on Monday, January 26. In this meeting the following should be discussed: o How is the Sparks Sunday school program working? o Rotation of teachers (the original idea behind the program). Hospitality: No new report.

Service: No new report.

Evangelism: No report. Page 8

Property: We are focusing on the installation of the electric water heater. Stewardship:  Since Ann Powell will no longer be a part of the Council starting in 2015, she will become the chairperson for this committee. Until now there was no one fulfilling that role.  We hope to change the way we think of Stewardship at St. Tim’s by meeting more regularly throughout the whole year instead of just around the Time, Talent, and Budget time.  Ann will get in contact with the members to discuss a cadence to meet. Human Development:  Meeting was held on January 12th  Action plans that came up out of this meeting: o Funds were discussed/provided by the Finance committee o Memorial Committee to share information with the Council o Establish resources for those wishing to give but that do not have the means to o Clean up for the Building fund detail o Gather the group together again with a Thrivent representative for discussion of the funds  The key is to get more committees working together with Human Development.  Next meeting is February 22nd Personnel/Mutual Ministry: Goal reviews for 2015 are coming up. Theatrical Ministry: Rehearsals for Footloose are underway! There are 40 individuals involved in the musical this year. Changes to the stage are currently underway as well. Pastor's Report:  A volunteer fair will be held on Sunday, February 8 after the 9am Sunday service. He encouraged each Council member to contact their committees to see if they wanted to be part of this. The theme will be chocolate again as it was in February 2014.  Pastor reviewed the nominating committee for new Council members.  Pastor included a calendar of events for the coming months through May. Old Business:  Blinds for the Lounge, Council room and Nursery will be installed the last week in January 2015.  Arnie is in contact with the printing company that prints our friendship pads. The Council would like to add email address to that as it can be easier for members or perspective members to be contacted that way. New Business: No new Wish List items were added to the list at this time. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at 6 pm with the new Council members. M/S/C Stephanie Jacobs/Sherry Kutchenriter approved to adjourn the meeting at 8:05 p.m. The Lord's Prayer ended the meeting. Respectfully submitted, Ann Powell

Theatrical Ministry: Nothing new outside of the annual report. 2015 Church Budget: Questions: 1. Page 20 – Why is the 2015 budget for medical reimbursement zero? This was Pastor’s request and was a shift in dollars. 2. Comment from Jeff Montour from the Finance Committee: The funds in the Memorial, Building, Organ and Human Development need to be better defined how to best use those. Human Development funds have recently changed since the printing of the annual report. 3. Page 21 – the budget for Office Supplies has increased by $500 for 2015 because of the copier paper. We needed to increase budget because we will no longer be given the copier paper to us as a donation. 4. Comment on Mortgage refinancing – For future budgets we should include Operating Costs vs Capital Improvement and how the dove tail into mortgage. 5. Suggestion made for the future Annual Report is to list capital expenditures for improvements – list 3 and 5 years for a dollar amount for physical improvements and put on notice and not treated as expense in current budget. Note: Council cannot approve anything over $5,000 which has to be brought to the congregation. 6. Suggestion made for future Annual Report is to put in statistics of age in church membership and participation. A previous comment made about the passing of a few members that were regular givers has decreased the estimates of giving sparked this idea to share this type of information with the congregation in the Annual Report. M/S/C Peter Mariahazy/Jim Reinke made a motion to carry the budget for 2015 forward as proposed. All voting aye. M/S/C Ed Borski/Bob Fahrbach made a motion to move forward with the replacing of the School Court door once all money is received. This motion was needed due to the quote being over $5,000. New Business  Chimney replacement – this involves the removal of the mortar, clean face of chimney, seal, put a new cap on, and replace the mortar. Estimates are at least $10,000. This work to be done no later than end of 2016. We can only vent through the chimney due to the size of the boilers. No other options. More information will be shared with the congregation when received.  On February 8th, each committee will represent themselves and a chocolate treat will be available to educate members on each committee’s purpose and needs.  Plan of Giving (Peter Mariahazy presented) – Page 17 equity funds listed there. M/S/C Bob Fahrbach/Jim Reinke approved to adjourn the meeting at 12:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Ann Powell Note: Next Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb.17 at 6pm.
