Trees for Veterans Halton Hills, ON – On June 6 a gathering of dignitaries, partners and sponsors met at
Dominion Gardens Park to honour local veterans through the launch of the Community Covenant. This initiative was developed for the purpose of recognizing the Town of Halton Hills as a community that respects and cherishes its’ veterans through a series of initiatives designed to educate, celebrate and enhance knowledge. “It is important that we never forget”, said Mayor Bonnette. “The contributions that we in our country of democracy enjoy due to the sacrifices of those who served Canada in times of war should never be diminished nor forgotten.” In attendance were members from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 – Acton, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 – Georgetown, The Lorne Scots Cadets including the Acton Navy Rose Cadets and representatives from the Dutch Canadian Remembrance Committee. The event featured the ‘trees for veterans’ project whereby 260 new trees in 40 parks were equipped with special tags that recognized the contributions of veterans, celebrated Canada’s 150 birthday and acknowledged the support from the program sponsors -- CN and partners. The tree planting is part of the Town’s initiative to replace trees damaged by the 2013 ice storm and was made possible through a $25,000 grant from the CN Ecoconnections program. Funding for the tree planting project was also provided by the Government of Canada through Trees Canada, the Tree to Our Nature, Canada 150 Legacy program.
