MEDIA RELEASE July 22, 2016
Town acquires lands adjacent to Gellert Community Centre & Park HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town’s land holdings at Gellert Community Centre and Park have grown thanks to the recent purchase of 2.82 hectares (seven acres) of parkland located just north of the new Danby Road Extension, east of Eighth Line and south of Gellert Community Centre and Park in Georgetown. The Town secured an option to purchase the lands from Fernbrook Homes in 2010, and the purchase was completed on July 21. “We’re very pleased to have acquired ownership of these lands beside Gellert Community Centre and Park” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “Acquiring these lands ensures that the Town can continue to provide high quality parks and other recreation facilities for use by existing and future residents of the Town. We are pleased that Fernbrook Homes extended the option to purchase to the Town”. The Town will manage the newly acquired lands as an extension of the Gellert Community Centre and Park. The existing site is currently home to the Gellert Community Centre (pool, community hall and meeting room), a playground, splash pad, ball diamonds, sports fields, and tennis courts. The Town will be working to finalize the design for the lands, in conjunction with preliminary plans for a future expansion of the Gellert Community Centre.
