MEDIA RELEASE April 1, 2014

Town receives two prestigious conservation awards HALTON HILLS, ON – The Town of Halton Hills received two awards at the recent 2013 Friends of the Credit Conservation Awards in Mississauga. The first award is for the recently completed Community Sustainability Strategy titled “Imagine Halton Hills”. The second award recognizes a unique and sustainable approach to storm water planning and practices implemented into the new subdivision – the Meadows in the Glen. Mayor Rick Bonnette accepted the innovative awards on behalf of the Town. “I am so pleased to see the Town being recognized for the initiative work in our community. Credit Valley Conservation and the Town have a common goal to improve the environmental health which ultimately improves the quality of life for our residents”. The Community Sustainability Strategy is a long-term strategy that focuses on the environmental, economic, cultural, and social well-being of the community until the year 2060. The award recognizes the environmental focus of the strategy which consists of numerous goals to improve the natural environment. In particular, it cites the goals which relate to our natural heritage, water conservation and quality, land use planning and biodiversity. John Linhardt, the Town’s Director of Planning, Development & Sustainability noted, “I am proud of the Community Sustainability Strategy. The strategy’s vision and goals align with and support the Town’s commitment to good land-use planning which will materialize in complete, vibrant and thriving communities.” The second award recognizes the sustainable features of low impact development of the Meadows in the Glen subdivision, the first of its kind in the Credit Valley watershed. These features exceed the minimum standard practices and include sustainable storm water planning, such as narrower roads, porous pavements, street swales, rain gardens, bio-retention soak away pits and preservation of forests. Chris Mills, the Town’s Director of Infrastructure Services added, “the ability to utilize low impact development techniques for storm water management allowed us to preserve the environmental integrity of the area to the benefit of the community. We are looking forward to applying many of the same techniques on future developments within the Town. I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of everyone involved in making this low impact subdivision a reality.”
