Paper-II

Read the passage and answer the questions 46-50 : The scientific treatment and preservation of objects is an important function of museums. The National Research Laboratory for conservation of cultural property has recently been established by the Government of India at Lucknow to conduct researches on various mediums of art, their preservation aspects and to train-up museum personnel in conservation in India and South-East Asia. The Conservation Laboratory of the National Museum, New Delhi, is provided with modern equipments. Besides the skilled and experienced staff to conserve the vast variety of materials found in India, it includes specialists to take care of the oil paintings of Western origin also. Several other big institutions like the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad, Indian Museum, Calcutta, Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay, the Govt. Museum, Madras, the State Museum, Lucknow and many others have their own conservation laboratories to preserve valuable objects of art and culture. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains an archaeological laboratory at Dehradun in Uttar Pradesh to look after the conservation work of monuments and excavated material. Yet, the smaller institutions still suffer from the lack of proper conservation facilities. In the report submitted by Plenderleith and Paul Coremans in 1965, a strong recommendation was made to establish the zonal conservation laboratories to preserve the material. The action has yet to be taken. 46.
