Tiana Storey lost, and not mourn, but instead, they celebrate that person’s memory and focus on being happy. I think that it is a good way to assist in dealing with the loss of someone close, and that this whole aspect should be recognized by more than just the Mexican culture, as a different approach to dealing with death, in an easier way.” Pictured: Decorated skulls for Day of the Dead

Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday, celebrated during the days of October 31st through November 2nd. It is celebrated in the country of Mexico, more specifically, the south and central regions. This holiday honors the family meme era and friends that have since passed away. Loved ones gather together to construct altars that celebrate life and the memories of those who have passed. This event is seen as a time of commemoration and joy, rather than a time for sadness and mourning. Many gifts and items of remembrance are used to decorate the altars to establish personal significance for the families and friends. Some of the

things used to decorate the altars include flowers, candles, painted ceramic, or sugar skulls, as well as pictures of loved ones. These items are often used to convey the favorite things from the relative or friend’s lifetime. During these days, the spirits of those who passed are welcomed back to Earth to be a unification factor of the living and dead in one joyous event. The vitality of life is the main focus of which this holiday is built upon. Damaira Jones, a Bay City Central High alum gave her opinion on this holiday saying, “I think that Day of the Dead is a very special and unique holiday. I like that they take days to remember everyone those they have

World’s Oldest Tsunami Victim In 1929, a skull was found near the Papua New Guinea town of Aitape, and is now likely to be one of the world’s oldest tsunami victims. Scientists had at first linked the skull to be one of modern human’s ancestors, the Homo erectus from the Pleistocene age, but now say that it probably belonged to someone who died in a tsunami during the Holocene age. There have been calls for reassessments on the environment where the skull was discovered, for it could hold more clues and information about the victim. The research team who came to this conclusion drew from many factors. One such factor is that the Panari Creek area, where the skull had been found, had experienced tsunamis for

Hannah Sullivan marck tectonic plates and tsunamis being frequent natural disasters. One of the authors of the research paper, Professor James Goff of the University of New South Wales, said, “We conclude that this person who died there so long ago is probably the oldest-known tsunami victim in the world.”

thousands of years. Sediments taken from the area proved this fact. Another is that the person may have been from a coastal tribe, since around 6,000-7,000 years ago sea levels stabilized and flat lands and lagoons began to form. The area, while having favorable human habitats, is considered to have been active, with earthquakes at the nearby converging Australian and North Bis-

Second Round of ESPN Layoffs After over 100 firings of staff members last April, ESPN is looking at another set of cuts near the end of November/start of December, that will be within the 40 to 60 person range. "This time, it won't matter if you're 'liked' or not. It's not going to be pretty," said an ESPN Executive about the upcoming cuts. Ever since 2012, the subscribers to ESPN have been dropping, most shows were also following in that path. In 2017, the only things that have had rising viewer totals was Monday Night Football and First Take with Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman. Other than that, everything else has been in decline. Sooner or later, the amount that ESPN pays out to all the leagues that they cover to cover them will come back to bite them. These cuts are apart of the biting process. Despite these cuts, ESPN is still bringing in talent

from other places such as Yahoo Sports, where they acquired Katie Nolan and Adrian Wojnarowski. The crucial part of the decline of ESPN is the how much the ratings of their main show SportsCenter has gone down. It used to be the main reason ESPN had major success, and now with the ratings of that show going down, they need to do what they can to recover what they lost in ratings.

Senior Advice

There are eight months until seniors graduate from Central High School. That’s less than a year. I remember as a freshman sitting in the auditorium and listening to Mr. Marciniak telling us it’s going to go by fast. When he said that, my friends and I were talking and saying, “Not fast enough.” But dang he was right, I’m now a senior. Thinking back, I wish that I didn't have a poor attitude about school, and would have enjoyed it more. In high school, you have the best of both worlds. You’re a young adult, so if you make a mistake, people will understand and say that you are learning about the adult world. They understand you’re still a kid, but they don’t treat you like one. As a high schooler, you shouldn’t wish for it to go by fast, because in the

end, you will wish you had more time. Currently, I’m filling things out for college, and it’s becoming a reality that this is coming to an end. I’m an athlete here at BCC, I play volleyball and basketball. Tomorrow is my very last volleyball game. After tomorrow, I know I’m going to want just one more game, or think what could I have to been a better athlete, how could I been a better teammate, or what I could have done to change the last game. So tomorrow, I’m going to put it all out there. I’m going to put my best effort in, and I’m going to end my last game as my best game. One of my coaches once said, “Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard.” My advice to underclassmen is: work hard, make sure at the

JFK Files Released

It would be a fight to the end to try to keep classified Kennedy assassination files within the government's hands. Intelligence officials were doing everything to void the release of the files. Trump, the only single man who could stop the release, butted heads with the CIA over it. 2,800 files surround JFK’s 1963 assassination were released after a 25 year mandated congressional release deadline. Trump refused to sign several documents given to the White House lawyers to have a reduction in the number of files re-

Seth Chislea leased. Trump has continued to have poor relationships with the agency. He has used his power to exert control over the agencies after they spyed over his campaign. Trump denied several redactions on the document files. Trump wrote he had “no choice” to keep thousands of other documents secret had they related to national security. Trump was irritated about redactions, he stated he wanted minimal redactions done to the files earlier. "The president and White House have been very clear with all agencies for weeks: They must be transparent and disclose all information possible," White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah stated Friday. Trump received a briefing in the oval office with the Chief of Staff, White House Counsel, and the National Security Council le-

Suspensions Given to Professional Athletes Professional sports in the United States are very important to people, and if someone’s team doesn’t do good, they usually have an excuse to say things such as, “Our best player was out of the game.” Things like this happen, and most of the time, it’s not on accident why somebody’s not playing. If somebody’s not playing, that usually means they are hurt or they are suspended for something they did. Suspensions can really hurt, just not the player, but also the team, if that player contributes a ton to the team. There are many different ways players from all sports can get suspended, but it usually comes down to something dirty that they did. A popular suspension storyline

that has been going on for a while right now, is about the Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot. Elliot was supposed to get suspended because of a claim of domestic violence made against him, but his suspension hasn’t been given to him yet because of a ton of legal issues. Some other ways that players will get suspended is if they try to fight at all, say or do some really bad things, and then the obvious

Jacob Murawski which is take some type of drugs. Another suspension given out recently was to Houston Astros player, Yuli Gurriel for mocking another player. The commissioner of the MLB gave him a five game suspension for next year since he’s in the World Series right now and said “There is no question that it is a difficult decision as to when the right timing was.” Picture caption: Punching in the MLB Picture credit: Source

Manus Island Refugees Papua New Guinea is the place where hundreds of refugees were being held on the Manus Island, in a detention center, protected by security, and were given supplies, such as food, plumbing, and water. This operation was led by the Australian government. However, this has caused concern with local protesters in the nearby area. Due to local uproar, the Australian government decided the island it was unconstitutional for refugees staying there, so they decided to move the refugees to new places. On Tuesday October 31st, the center was intended to shut down all supplies to the island, making it hard to live on the island as a

refugee, if they did not want to leave. It turns out that many of the refugees didn’t want to move out, most of them feared for their safety while being moved to a different place, because of local resistance. What the Australian government didn’t know, was that the refugees had been stockpiling dry biscuits and water for the last two weeks, making their intentions clear that they were staying behind. NFL Grievance Many people know of the infamous Colin Kaepernick, who has been released from the NFL. He is the one who started protests across the NFL during the National Anthem. Kaepernick thinks that he deserves a spot in the NFL, and that the owners of NFL teams are working together to make sure he doesn’t get placed on any roster. This case happened soon after he was done visiting with the Baltimore Ravens. He was almost signed, but then they never completed the deal. Kaepernick believes that the NFL owners don’t want to sign him because of his protests. So, in response to this he, filed a collusion grievance against the NFL. The NFLPA has been in contact with Kaepernick, and have agreed to follow the direction of Kaepernick's advisors. Kaepernick was a starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, and led them to a Super Bowl victory against the Balti-

He claims he has explored every possible option with every team, and that is why he has filed this grievance. Gurriel’s Suspension

Yuli Gurriel, a pivotal role in the Houston Astros organization, was suspended in game three of the World Series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gurriel is suspended for five games after television cameras caught him making racial gestures and mouthing words during the game. Since he isn’t appealing this, his suspension will start in the regular season in 2018, missing the first five games. However, he will continue to play out the World Series. After Gurriel hit a home run of Yu Darvish on Friday for game three, Gurriel returned to the Astros dugout and put his fingers to the side of his face and lifted the corners of his eyes to make the “slanted eyes” gesture, which is regarded as offensive to Asians. He also used the word “chinito,”

Spanish slang for Chinese boy. Darvish grew up in Japan playing baseball before coming to the Major League Baseball in 2012. He was born in Japan to an Iranian father and a Japanese mother. Gurriel said in a statement that the Astros released, “I sincerely apologize to everyone that I offended with my actions. I deeply regret it.” Gurriel won’t get paid for the five games he has to miss next year due to this incident so the Astros said they would donate the salary Gurriel would have earned to charities. One charity in particular they’re donating to is directly supporting diversity efforts.

Staff Member of the Week Allison Sobczak is a teacher currently working at Bay City Central. She once was a student at BCC, and was part of the graduating class of 2008. At BCC, she was involved in volleyball, basketball, soccer, Nation Honor Society, and Student Council. After high school, Sobczak started her college career at Oakland Community College, because it gave her a chance to play volleyball. Then, she attended Ferris State for one semester. After that semester, she decided to become a teacher, so she transferred to Central Michigan University. She attended CMU for four and a half years. Sobczak has a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education, and is currently working on getting her Masters. “I like understanding why, and I think science gives that to us. Biology, especially, and how living things work.” This is her fourth year working

as a teacher. She taught at Western High School for three years, and this is her first year at BCC. “I started working with kids right out of high school with coaching, and I knew that I made a connection. Then I found my passion for science in college, and knew that teaching was what I should be doing.” Outside of being a teacher Sobczak is also a volleyball coach at BCC. She has been coaching for eight years. Three years at Merrill High School, and five years of being the varsity coach at BCC. Also, she is the freshman girls basketball at BCC, this will be her fourth year coaching. “We all

NFL Touchdown Celebrations The NFL used to allow players to do a bunch of different celebrations, but then they put a bunch of restrictions on them. They still could do certain celebrations, but if the refs thought they violated the rules, they would get a flag for it and most likely get fined by the league. Although, this past summer the NFL changed the celebration rules and allowed players to do more celebrations. Now, players can do group celebrations, celebrate on the ground, and celebrate with the football. With this new rule, players in the NFL have been showing off all of their celebration skills. Some of the more popular group celebrations are the Minnesota Vikings playing duck, duck, goose; the Detroit Lions curling and ping pong; and the

Pittsburgh Steelers playing hide and seek. And the popular solo celebrations are when Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs danced, when Devonta Freeman acted like he shot a basketball, and when Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs acted like he fell asleep using the football as a pillow. Many of NFL players enjoy

Teacher of the Week: Mr. McLean Howard McLean is a fantastic art teacher at Bay City Central High School. McLean has been at teacher at BCC for six years, and loves the job of being able to share the experience of art to students the way he does. Sharing art is why McLean wanted to teach art in the first place. McLean worked at a factory for 15 years before attending college, he said, “It was a mistake. The only reason for working there was for the money, it was not my passion at all.“ After the factory closed, McLean attended Saginaw Valley State University to do something he loved and that’s how he ended up being an art teacher. Mural Design and Clay are McLean’s favorite classes to teach at BCC. McLean is the type of teacher to go above and beyond for his students to make sure they learn new things, and

make sure they have fun as well. Every Halloween, McLean decorates his room; it’s his favorite holiday because of all the different makeup ideas, and the costumes. There is one thing he wishes was different and that’s no cell phones. Being a teacher he likes being able to teach different kids, and gets to see all different ideas in art from them. McLean has a pug named Katie that he has had for 10-12 years now, and a son named Howard as well. Outside of school, Howard enjoys creating art, especially airbrush art. BCC Anti-Bullying Club The Anti Bullying Club is a club at BCC for students who want to try to prevent bullying. Jill Moore started the Anti Bullying Club when two students came up to her asking if she could help them start it. The students had been involved in a really bad bullying situation where one was the bully, one was the victim. They wanted to start the Anti Bullying Club so that bullying situations like theirs could be prevented and resolved. The club was started approximately seven years ago. The Anti Bullying Club is to raise awareness about bullying in our community. Bullying happens everyday whether it is towards you, a sister, or even a friend. It's

always good to speak up, if you are afraid to speak up, tell a teacher or someone who can help. The Anti Bullying Club insures that everyone has a voice. Some activities that are done for the club is meetings once a week, presentations and assemblies at local schools. At Bay City

Five Teens Kill Man with Rock A group of five teen boys ages 16-17 are accused of throwing a rock over an overpass near Flint, Michigan, on Oct 18, and killing a 32 year old man Kenneth White. The group of teens were arraigned in Genesee County district courtroom and the judge denied bond for them. White was on his way home from work, riding in the passenger seat when all of a sudden a rock came through the windshield, and was struck in the face, head, and chest. There is a GoFundMe page to help his family out with the funeral expenses. White was also engaged to be married to Amiee Cagle and has a 5 year old son. Officials believe Kyle Anger, 17, threw the rock that killed White, but all the boys are being charged the same and can get the most of life in prison for their actions. Other guys involved beside Anger were, Alexzander Miller, Mark Sekelsky, Mikadyn Payne, and Trevor Gray.

The five teenagers are being charged as adults, and one count of second-degree murder each. Being also charged with conspiracy to commit murder, and six felony counts, each of malicious destruction of property. The boys will have a preliminary hearing scheduled on November 2. The story of the five guys has made all the top new stories, and talk shows, around the world.

Cell phones have become a distraction for teens in the classroom all around the world. This generation of teens believes that if they don’t have their phone, there is nothing to do, so they use them as a distraction. Cell phones can be used for good in the classroom, such as when they are being used for educational purposes. You can use cell phones if you have a project you might need to look information up for, or checking your grades, or even using it for the calculator. Cell phones are also good to have on you in

case there’s ever a family emergency and someone needs to get ahold of you in a timely manner. In certain situations, they are good to keep with you at all times, however, you don’t necessarily need to be on them at all times. When cell phones are used in classroom to scroll through Facebook or text back and forth while you should be doing your classwork is when the problem comes in. Teachers have found that the more students that involve themselves in texting and tweeting during class time the lower the grades seem to be. In Bay City Central High School, we have a pretty lenient cell phone policy. You should not be on your phones in class or while in the hallways during class time. Most teachers will allow you to

If it is between classes you are more than welcome to check out your Facebook. “I believe that if you want to be on your phone during class you should be able to, but if you fail the class, it’s your own fault for being on the phone,” said BCC senior Sierra Rangel.
