popular thing for people to do for entertainment. New movies come out all the time and some of them make a ton of money off of people especially if it’s part of a series. They make more money every year a huge movie comes out. And these movies also break box office records a lot of the time. Many of the box office records held by movies are without inflation taken into account. The box office records with inflation and without inflation are different. The top records held without inflation are Gone With the Wind at

number one, Star Wars at number two, and The Sound of Music at number three. These movies all made over 1.25 billion dollars and they all came out a long time ago. There’s no movies in the top 10 that have come out in the 21st century. And there’s only three movies in the top 24 that have come out in the

Players Arrested in China A game being is held in China between the UCLA Bruins and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. However, this is not the main headline of this game. Three UCLA players: Jalen Hill, Cody Riley, and LiAngelo Ball were caught shoplifting sunglasses from Louis Vuitton, which was a store near the hotel they were staying at. “I would say they could be in quite a bit of trouble if they have solid proof that they shoplifted,” said William Nee, who knows a thing or two about the Chinese court system. There is a possibility that they could be held in prison from

three to ten years. The three players will not be able to leave their hotel until the legal process is dealt with. Ball’s father, Lavar Ball, had declined to comment on the situation, despite him being in China with his family. Some Georgia Tech players were being questioned as to being also involved in the shoplifting investigation, but were later on declared “not involved in the activi-

These top movies include Avatar at number one, Titanic at number two, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at number three. A journalist was impressed with Avatar and said “Sets a good example for how cool a military SciFi film could look”. In order, these movies made around 2.78 billion, 2.21 billion, and 2.06 billion dollars.

Colorado Walmart Shooting

The evening of Wednesday, November 1, in Thornton, Colorado at a Walmart shopping supercenter, 47 year old Scott Ostrem, calmly walked into the business and began firing several shots into the crowd of individuals shopping and checking out. The motive of this attack has been labeled unclear, leaving this shooting categorized as random. It is believed that some of the shoppers pulled their personal concealed weapons as a precaution. Ostrem’s acts led to the

death of two men and one woman, identified as Victor Vasquez age 26, Carlos Moreno age 66, and Pamela Marques age 52. Both Vasquez and Moreno passed away at the scene, and Marques died at the hospital due to the injuries she endured. Ostrem fled the scene of the crime in a red colored Mitsubishi Mirage following the acts he carried out. An overnight manhunt was conducted to apprehend the gunman, where he was stopped at an intersection less than 10 miles from the Walmart store. He was taken into custody on the morning of Thursday, November 2. Following his arrest, police acquired a warrant to search Ostrem’s apartment where investigators obtained a cellular phone, a safe, a camera, and other materials. Investigators discovered a suitcase that contained several

Mass Shooting in Texas A shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas leaves the death toll at 26. The age range of those dead vary from 17 months to 77 years old, and even includes the death of an unborn child. At least ten people who survived the shooting remain in the hospital in critical condition even four days later. This shooting took place on November 5, 2017. A man by the name Devin Patrick Kelly escaped the Peak Behavioral Health Systems in New Mexico in June 2012. He was placed in the mental health facility after abusing his ex-wife and her child. He also smuggled guns onto an Air Force Base and made threats towards the commanders, according to a Police Report. Five years later Kelly returns to Texas and opens fire on the small Texan church. On the day of the shooting, Ostrem left his job at B&M Roofing Company, without saying a word, around nine in the morning, and did not return. Thornton, Ohio’s police spokesman, Victor Avila, gave a statement on this event and said, “This is a very heinous act. We don’t know exactly what the motive of the person was, but it was certainly a terrible act.” Pictured: The Walmart Supercenter subject to the shooting Picture Credit: Source Some of the information in this article was taken from a Fox News report. It is said that the motivation behind the shooting involved arguments between Kelly and his mother-inlaw. It was also said that months prior to the shooting Kelly posted many anti-christ and pro gun things onto his Facebook page. Kelly had previously attended the church in Sutherland Springs. Although he had attended the church, he was not welcomed there. Pastor Frank Pomeroy said he knew Kelly from his attendance at church events, but he did not want him there. Pomeroy said that Kelly “was not a good person to be around.” Kelly was an Air Force veteran that was dismissed from the Air Force based on his mental illness. Kelly should not have been able to purchase the guns legally because of his violent crime con-

viction on his military record. This was failed to be expressed to the FBI background check system due to the Air Force. Pictured: Kelly Picture Credit: Source

Christmas Around the World Christmas, a product of the 1860s, now is probably the most celebrated holiday in the world. Christmas is hundreds of years of secular and religious traditions around the world. Around the world Christmas is celebrated in many different ways. Sweden, Germany, Mexico, France, Australia, Canada, and the U.S all celebrate it in different ways. The celebration of St. Lucia day started in Sweden. Traditionally, the oldest daughter in each family will wake up early and wake up the rest of the family. Wearing a long white gown with red sash, a crown made of twigs, and nine lighted candles, For the rest of the day she will be called “Lussi”. After she awakens them, they will eat breakfast with the nine lightened candles. In Germany it is common seeing decorated evergreen trees. After 1750s Christmas trees began showing up throughout Germany. In 1820s the first German immigrants decorated Christmas trees in Pennsylvania. In 1848 the first American newspaper

carried a picture of a Christmas tree and the custom spread to nearly every home in just a few years. In 1828 Joel R. Poinsett brought a red and green plant from Mexico to America. As the colors seemed perfect for the new holiday, the plants, which were called poinsettias. In 1900s they became an universal symbol of the holiday. Christmas in France is call Noel. Noel means “the good news” and it refers to the gospel. In southern France, people commonly burn a log in their homes from Christmas eve until New year’s day. It came from an ancient tradition, where farmers would use part of the log to ensure good luck for the next year’s harvest. In Australia Christmas comes in the middle of the summer. Some-

Playoff Race “And your national champions are…” The college football playoff is a chance for four teams to have hope for a once in a lifetime chance to win a national title. The top four teams will play one another. Even though it is still early in the season, the season is also coming to an end fast. College football is crazy every week with upsets that happen at the last second or where top ranked teams get blown out. “Who’s in?” If teams like Alabama, Georgia, Wisconsin, Miami (FL), Oklahoma, Clemson and Notre Dame win out four of those teams will be in the playoffs. However it is

Traditional Christmas days include family gatherings, with gift exchanging gifts. The meal consist with ham, turkey, pork, or seafood. Canada’s traditions are similar to the traditions in the U.S. The Eskimos celebrate a winter festival called sinck tuck, which features parties with dancing and gift exchanging. The United States Christmas is celebrated in December 25. The day celebrates Jesus Christ’s birth. Many Americans decorate Christmas trees, their homes, visit family or friends ,and exchange gift. projected that Alabama and Georgia will face each other in the SEC conference title and whoever loses will be eliminated from the playoffs. Notre Dame has a tough game as they face Miami (FL) who is undefeated right now but both have lots to prove to be in the playoffs. Another top ten match-up is number 5 ranked Oklahoma versus number 8 ranked TCU, whoever loses

is most likely out of playoff contention. Teams like TCU, Washington, Auburn, Ohio State need basically a miracle for them to make the playoffs. With Ohio State and Auburn having two losses they would both need to win out and have multiple top 10 teams lose. Teams like TCU and Washington they would need to also win out and have a top 5 team lose. TCU has a chance this week to enter for higher playoff hopes as they look to beat Oklahoma.

Paradise Paper Leaks

On November 5, 13.4 million documents related to offshore investment known as the “Paradise Papers” were released into the public domain to be analyzed by many journalists around the world. The documents contain many names and companies that are all involved in offshore investment and shady actions to cut taxes. In the United States alone, there are about 31,000 citizens related to the documents. Some more notable people involved in the papers include Madonna, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and many donors and members of Donald Trump’s administration. At least 12 members of Trumps cabinet and donors to his campaign were mentioned in the papers.

Another more notable figure listed in the papers is Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom. There is a current investigation into one of her investments while her other investment was unknown by the British dutchy. The main problem with offshore investments that are listed in the Paradise Papers is that with unknown offshore investments, people could get away

Most reforms to tax codes are focused on tax evasion. Since 2006, more than 4,500 tax reforms happened with a large majority of them involving tax avoidance. Void Found Inside of Giza Pyramid Earlier this week, BBC reported about a mysterious void found in one of Egypt’s famous Giza Pyramids. The space is surprisingly large, and has piqued researchers’ attentions. They found the hole using muography, in which a scanner picks up on cosmic particles called muons, which decay as they move through matter. The void was found inside Khufu’s Pyramid, the largest of the three famous Giza Pyramids. Leader of the exhibition and president of Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute, Paris, Mehdi Tayoubi said, “...We were expecting to see the King’s chamber and grand gallery but we were surprised to find a big void and we think what we have here

is very important.” He was also quoted saying the void was the size of the Statue of Liberty, and another news source said it could fit a 200-seater airplane. Most theories, however, think it to be another chamber or gallery. Various research teams hope to talk to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiques so they can find out what’s inside the void. The most discussed way is to drill a oneinch hole up from under the void and let a flyable robot inside. If this works out, there is similar talk of using similar technology on Tutankhamun’s tomb in order to find the secret burial place of Queen Nefertiti, wife of King Akhenaten. Manhattan Terrorized by Radical Motorist On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, a despicable act was carried out against innocent individuals that changed the entire fate of the day. Due to the influence of the Islamic terrorist organization, known most commonly as ISIS, eight civilians lost their lives, and nearly a dozen more sustained injuries resulting in hospitalization. Six people were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were classified as dead later throughout the day. This radical event was carried out by 29 year old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, an Uzbekistan native who has been a resident of New York City, in the United States since 2010. Sometime in the afternoon on Tuesday, Saipov rented a white, Home Depot pickup truck and drove, at top speed, down the occupied Hudson River Park biking lane for approximately a mile, heading

toward the World Trade Center in Manhattan, NYC. All the while, not hesitating to strike as many people as he could along the path.

The motorist rampage was ended when Saipov struck a bus with the rented vehicle, injuring four people, where he then exited the truck, wielding a paintball gun in one hand and a pellet gun in the other. The Boring Company’s First Test Hole A Success Elon Musk’s “Boring Company”, a company made for making tunnels that will be used for fast transport of people and cars, made its first section of tunnel under Los Angeles. The current section, which measures to be about 500 ft long, is only a small fraction of the planned 2 miles. "Should be 2 miles long in three or four months and hopefully stretch the whole 405 [north to south] corridor from [Los Angeles International Airport] to the 101 in a year or so,” Musk said in a tweet about the tunnel. These tunnels will be useful in reducing the traffic in dense urban environments and in hotspot traffic locations, such as airports. Los Angeles and many other municipal governments look forward to working with the boring company in the future to help reduce their traffic congestion by adding these tunnels to their city.

Joseph A Bailey II

These tunnels will use an electric-powered skate to transport people and cars at speeds of up to 150mph on the main artery and will switch to a side tunnel to exit and enter. The main difference between this and a subway would be that you don’t have to stop and wait at other stops you are not getting off at. One feature that could excitedly be added in the future is a vacuum tube, enabling a hyperloop pod, which can travel even faster than the aforementioned 150 mph that the skate of the tunnel could go. Neymar Jr: The Highest Paid Footballer Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, known as Neymar Jr. born on February 5, 1992, in São Paulo, Brazil. Neymar drew attention for his impressive soccer abilities at an early age. He emerged as a star for Santos FC as a teenager, winning four straight Player of the Year awards while becoming one of Brazil's most popular public figures. He’s a Brazilian soccer player, considered one of the greatest in history. He acts as a left-wing. Currently defends Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian National Team. Neymar is only 25 years old, and receives a salary of € 36.8 million. He’s known to have a very big heart and be really humble. “I was never motivated by money. I think above all else

about the happiness of my family, regardless of money,” he said. In 2017, he became the most expensive transfer in the history of world football (soccer), with himself millionaire sale to Paris Saint-Germain by € 222 million. That same year, he was, for the second time in his career, one of the three finalists of the FIFA award of best soccer player of the world, currently named as

iOS 11.1

iOS 11.1 has just recently been released. The question is, do you want to download it and risk issues on your phone? Well, here are the positives and the negatives of the new update for Apple products. The positives of the update are pretty good compared to the negatives. The biggest and most hyped feature of the update was the 70 new emojis that have been added to the emoji keyboard. Another thing that has been improved is the wifi and bluetooth stability. There also has been a patch for KRACK wireless network attacks. This addition

Page 7

Josh Hoerner alone makes the update almost a must download. There also includes a feature where you touch on the left hand side of the menu and it brings up a multitasking menu. There also are a few bug fixes included within the update to help make the new iOS run smoothly. There always are a few negatives to every update on Apple devices. The new update does make older devices feel very old and run slowly. Since this is unpatched at the time there is concern for downloading it on old devices, as it will make the device run very slow until a patch comes out for the issue. Another issue is that some people are having reports of not being able to type the letter “i”. But Apple has said that a fix is on the way and should be released shortly. Overall, the update is good if you have an iPhone 7 or newer. If you do not have a newer phone

wait a little bit for the patch to make the devices run smoothly. “The update is cool and I haven’t had an issue,” Jacob Morse said. He recommends the update and so do I. Picture: New emojis being featured in the update. Picture by: Source

Nigerian Migrants

Since the start of the 2017 year, 2,839 migrants have died on the central Mediterranean route, according to the International Organization for Migration. However, 150,982 migrants have reached European shores at 74% arrival. Italian authorities are investigating the cause of death of 26 teenage girls that were found in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, November 5th. Nigerian migrant girls ranging from ages of 14-18 years old took a ship en route to Europe from Libya over this past weekend. Lorena Ciccotti, Salerno’s head of police said, “Their bodies were found close to a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunk when rescuers arrived.” Aid workers de-

scribed survivors hanging onto the remains of the vessels as remainders of girls were floating within reach. Libya is a familiar jumpingpoint for migrants seeking refuge on European shores. Many migrants are escaping war and persecution, along with searching for better economic opportunities. However, mostly girls are running from human traffickers. On Mon-

Cannabis Combats Cancer There are many misconceptions when the subject of marijuana is brought up. Marijuana is the name for the cannabis plant. This plant has three species: cannabis indica, cannabis sativa, and cannabis ruderalis. Each species of cannabis is used differently and causes a variety of effects. Scientist have found very many biologically active compounds in cannabis, these are known as cannabinoids. The two major cannabinoids are delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and Cannabidiol (CBD). THC is known for the “high” effects it has on cannabis users, and CBD is actually not psychoactive. Like anything, each person will also experience a different effect. Scientist have made advances in the study of medical cannabis and cancer patients over the last couple years. THC helps to reduce pain and nausea in users, and is a helpful anti-inflammatory, actually acting

The North American country is well known for human traffickers, whose operations go unseen to Libya’s central governance. as an antioxidant. CBD has been linked to helping seizure patients, by reducing the amount and intensity of seizures. It also helps to reduce anxiety and paranoia. Not only does cannabis help to reduce pain, nausea, and anxiety. It helps patients to better keep down food and, actually find food appealing. Not only in cancer patients, but HIV patients as well. Cannabis allows for the release of ghrelin, the primary hunger hormone, as well as boosting a user's pleasure response. One of the greatest and most important effects cannabis was for a cancer patients, these properties actually help kill cancer

and tumor cells. It is currently a major investigation for biopharmaceutical companies, as well as laboratories. THC and CBD in cannabis has been found to halt proliferation (the rapid increase of cancer cells), as well as killing existing cancer cells. In tumors, cannabis ultimately starves the tumor from growing by cutting off blood vessel formation within the tumor. “I think cannabis is helpful for people suffering with cancer. I just don't believe in it's recreational use,” Senior Savannah McCarty comments on the subject. Scientist still have much to learn about the cannabinoids within cannabis, but have high aspirations for the future advances that can be made. Caption: Cannabis combats Cancer Picture Credit: Source

Teacher of the Week: Mr. Garcia At Bay City Central, there are many amazing teachers, but one teacher in particular stands out above the rest, Gib Garcia. Garcia is the physical education teacher at BCC. He teaches a few types of physical education classes, such as basic physical education, team sports and modern fitness. Garcia received his Bachelor's Degree in Education and his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University. The reason he picked this profession out of them all is because of his interest in athletics, coaching, and working with children. When interviewed and asked to describe his teaching career in one to two words, he responded with “Rewarding.” His job is rewarding, he said, because of the progress students make throughout the trimester,

and through their high school career. Garcia stated that the feeling of affecting someone's life in a positive way is the greatest feeling in the world. Even if it is a small impact, like making a student smile. He sees tons of changes in students from their freshman year to their senior year. Whether it's the maturity of a student, or the shyness and communication. When in class he makes the effort to make sure students are on task and being responsible. His all around goal for his students, is to be prepared for the real world. Garcia said that there has been many memorable moments in his teaching career, but one stands out. The most memorable moment was way back when Bay City Central had their pool. There were about five to ten students that were afraid to swim.

World Series MVP This year's World Series has come to a wrap. The part that can change the life of a player is being named MVP of the World Series. This year, the winner of the 2017 World Series MVP was George Springer. He is the leadoff hitter of the Houston Astros, and did exactly what any leadoff hitter hopes they can do in a series. Springer is a 28 year old man, who is 6 foot 3 inches tall, and has been making his teammates feel like family. He said that he loves his team almost as much as his family. Springer is a very talented man on the diamond. He started very slow at 0-4 in the first game of the series, but he quickly recovered, as he had 17 hard hit balls out of his next 25 at bats. Hard hit balls are classified as hits with an exit velocity above 95 MPH. At the plate, he batted 11-

Finally, he set another record for total bases, and that was just the end of his historic World Series. His dad says, “He was really reflecting on the experience people had with Harvey and, most importantly, the resilience, dusting themselves off and starting over.” This year's World Series was also his-

Overuse of Antibiotics

Each year, two million Americans are infected with serious viruses that are resistant to one or more types of antibiotics. 23.000 die as a result of these drug-resistant infections (Antibiotic Resistance Threats 2013 CDC). However, there are many more who die from other conditions linked to antibiotic resistance in the body. While antibiotics are the correct approach to attacking these illnesses, turning to them for something as simple as a cold may not always be the good way to handle an illness. Clostridium Difficile (C. difficile) is a bacterial infection, that is not

Morgan Louchart-Inches

quite resistant to drugs but is in direct relation to antibiotic use. Meaning, 250,000 people a year are infected with C. difficile because of overuse of antibiotics, and of that 250,000 14,000 die. Each time you take an antibiotic, you kill the strain of a virus that is susceptible to the antibiotic, meaning it can be harmed. However, this leaves the strains of the virus that have certain mutations that are resistant to the antibiotic. Now, this strain of virus is able to adapt to the medication and reproduce drug resistant strains. For viruses like HIV, this is a very dangerous thing to think about. Scientists are developing new methods of combat drug resistance, but each method is riskier for the host than the last. You can stop taking medication all together, and allow the drug susceptible strains to repopulate. Then, hitting the virus with a combination of antibiotics in hopes to also wipe out the less susceptible strains. One of the major reasons re-

It’s a box that you insert capsules into in order to create smells of many kinds. “With Moodo, you can make 400,000 different smells,” says Future HD. You can even control how strong one scent is using the mobile app. Moodo is a simple and easy device to use. The capsules and box are affordable to the average middle class. Moodo is expected to be a big hit throughout house-

sistance is such an epidemic in the United States is because that it not only passed from one patient to another in a facility such as a hospital, or by not receiving treatment and spreading through the community. Antibiotics are given to animals, such as chickens to enlarge their breasts up to 3x what they should be. Same for cows, and pigs. Now, these animals are becoming resistant like us. When we consume this food, we consume the drug resistant bacteria. That, or the feces we use from these drug resistant animals as fertilizer is used on farmers crops, and the same cycle of consumption through humans takes place. It is our job as a country to take any prevention steps to hopefully combat this antibiotic resistance the best we can. Caption: Examples of How Antibiotic Resistance Spreads Picture Credit: Source

Youtube bring you movies for lower monthly prices. Moodo, however, could be installed in movie theaters and used to make you feel more into the movie by bringing you smells from the movie into the real world. Moodo could be the next hit and revive the dying movie theaters. Or it could become just another everyday household appliance. Even possibly both. Papa John's vs. the NFL Papa John’s blames the NFL for taking profits from their business. Papa John’s is the NFL’s official pizza, and believes its loss in sales is due to bad publicity created over the NFL’s anthem protests. The CEO of Papa John’s, John Schnatter, blames the problem on the NFL’s “poor leadership” and he said, “The NFL has hurt us.” Schnatter pulled all ads associated with the NFL for the time being. Schnatter lost $70 million after his company stocks took a downturn in the last week. Schnatter believes the problem lies with the NFL’s inability to stop the current debate. On the flip side, the NFL itself has lost fans, hurt advertising, and drawn major media. Schnatter has received several opposing arguments from sites such as The Root, who blame the sale losses on Papa John’s. Jemele Hill, a host for Sportscenter, bashed the compa-

Seth Chislea ny saying, “Sorry racial injustice couldn’t be ended as easily as adding an extra topping and a side of ranch.” Pizza Hut has also joined the argument, stating its sales have not changed from the debacle. Papa John’s stated Pizza Hut’s report was irrelevant as perception of the NFL is associated with Papa John’s as the official pizza. “Negative perceptions with the league give a negative perception for Papa John’s directly,“ Papa John’s executives states.

The Wolves’ Howl Volume VI, Issue IX Face to Face Communication Face to face interaction means social interaction without any technology. Children today spend approximately 4-5 hours in front of a screen, whether it be a computer, tablet, television, or phone. About 97% of students bring their phones, tablets, or computers with them wherever they go. People have been communicating more frequently through text or calling rather than communicating face to face. Sending a text can be a lot easier than confrontation ,especially for those of us who are shy, there is nowhere to

hide when you have to talk to someone face to face. Not only that, but people also rely on their phones for texts, updates and online shopping. We are constantly distracted by what is on our phones instead of realizing what is happening in real life. Face to face communication can

How a Subzero Winter Killed Dinosaurs For years, scientists have questioned just how the dinosaurs died. Just recently new discoveries have helped to prove just how our reptilian friends were wiped from the face of existence. The information comes from Professor Joanna Morgan, from Imperial London College, and her team, who was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in 2016 for sediment samples. When the asteroid hit Earth 66 million years ago, the 12 kilometer-wide asteroid vaporized billions of rock when it hit, leaving a large impact crater. The outsides of the crater collapsed a few times, leaving a 200 kilometerwide ring, at about 30 kilometers deep. It’s covered in 600 meters of sediment on the Gulf’s floor now, but some sinkholes in Mexico line the crater’s edge. Even though the asteroid left a giant dent in the earth, it wasn’t the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. It was the subzero winter that came after the asteroid hit. As the rock was vaporized, about 325 gigatonnes of sulfur, and maybe 425 gigatonnes of CO2, were ejected into the atmos-

phere. In the long term, the elements would provide a long-term warming effect, but with the amount immediately put into the atmosphere, alongside soot and dust, it provided a severe cooling effect. About three-fourths of earth’s living population would die out due to the subzero winter. This would include most plant life, and the dinosaurs. Morgan Steele commented about the winter, saying, “We always thought there was a global winter but with these new, tighter constraints, we can be much more sure about what happened.”

The people who use face to face communication could also feel ignored or pushed away when their friends or family are always on their electronic device. The Wolves’ Howl Volume VI, Issue IX Farewell Fraser Bay City Central High School will have some major changes in the coming years. Morley Fraser retires as Central's varsity football coach. He ran the post for 32 years. Prior to this season, Fraser retired as Central's athletic director, after running the position dating back to the 1998 school year. As a varsity football coach at Central, Fraser had a record of 167 - 140. Fraser also won two Saginaw Valley League games, 11 playoff appearances, and was a state runner up in 1994. Fraser knew it was his time when he submitted his letter of resignation to Central's new Athletic Director, Jennifer Thunberg, and principal Tim Marciniak. “Since I was a ball boy in the ‘60s

with my dad, it’s always been football for me,” Fraser said. “So to step away, of course I had some second thoughts. But as the year went on, and not being in the hallways every day, I knew it was the right decision. It was the only decision.” Fraser was a pivotal piece in securing Bay City Central's 500th varsity football win in 2016. Prior

2017 World Series Recap

For the first time in their franchise history, the Houston Astros have won the World Series. In a World Series classic, the Astros prevailed over the Dodgers in seven games, taking game seven in by the score of 5-1. The MVP of the World Series was Astros center fielder George Springer, who went 11 for 29 at the plate, hitting five home runs, plating seven RBI’s runs batted in, and broke two records during the World Series. Those being four straight games with a home run, as well as setting the record for most extra base hits in a series with eight. Springer had to say this after winning the award, "But it's about the Houston Astros tonight, our city, our fans. That patch on our chests really does mean something. We're coming home champions." This was really a great series, it had many dramatic moments, including game five, which may have been the best game in

World Series existence. Starting with game one where the Dodgers came out firing on home turf, claiming a 3-1 victory on the back of seven strong innings from Clayton Kershaw. Game two was one of the better games of the series, where the Houston Astros won it in 11 innings, 7-6. With LA up 3-2 going into the ninth, Marwin Gonzalez went deep to tie of the game off LA closer Kenley Jansen. MVP George Springer hit a two run home run in the 11th, to put the nail in the coffin for Houston. The series shifted back to Houston for the next three games. Houston hitters exploded in game three off of Yu Darvish, and never looked back as they held on to win 5-3. Game four was a pitching duel between Charlie Morton and Alex Wood, and the game went to the ninth, tied 1-1, where the Astros brought in Ken Giles. He got hammered, causing LA to win by

Page 14

Kendrick Brissette the final of 6-2. We move onto game five where Houston had come back from multiple four run deficit to win in ten innings, 1312, on an Alex Bregman single, to bring in the winning run. With Houston holding a 3-2 series lead, the series shifted back to LA, where they came out strong with 3-1 victory behind a strong performance from their bullpen. With the series tied up at three apiece, game seven was winner take all for each team. Houston came out of the gates flying and never looked back, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, behind another two run home run from Springer. A combination of Lance McCullers, Brad Peacock, Francisco Liriano, and Chris Devenski pitched the first five innings of scoreless baseball for Houston. Meanwhile, Charlie Morton shut it down the rest of way allowing only one run in four innings, giving Houston their first title. Olivia Walker is a graduate from the class of 2017. She’s 18 years old and currently works at the Doubletree Hotel’s restaurant called the Riverfront Grille. Walker attended Immanuel Lutheran from preschool to eighth grade. When she was younger, she played soccer and basketball. In her junior year of high school, Walker participated in the robotics team. She enjoys painting and anything that involves art. In elementary, she wanted to become a doctor, later she changed that to being an interior designer, and now pursues her new dream of becoming a marine biologist. “My plan is to discover the secrets of deep sea jellies all around the ocean,” says Walker. She is really proud of

what she grew up to be. “I grew up in a household with very close minded and judgmental people so it was hard to be myself and do what I wanted to do because it was so frowned upon. I’m so happy that I have stopped caring about what they wanted and am now doing what I want to do,” explained Walker. She is not only figuring out her future, but also who she is as a person. Walker has some advice for the future graduates. She says,”Do what you want to do and do it with passion. Don't listen to the tons of people who are going to push you down or say that it’s a bad choice or won't work out because truth is, if you have a plan, and truly go for it, it is possible.”
