Educational Services Newsletter District Wide LCAP Meetings It has been a short, but busy week. Two LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) Stakeholder Engagement meetings were held at Frank Ledesma School on February 21 and Gabilan School on February 22. Turnout at both events was robust. Families arrived at 5:30 to enjoy pizza and time together. Principals Richard Radtke (Frank Ledesma School) and Abbie Madsen (Gabilan School) began the meeting with a presentation on the LCAP specific to their schools. Then parents rotated through three groups, providing input on the District’s six LCAP Goals. School Site and District employees facilitated the goal groups in English and Spanish and . parents provided input on the things the District is doing well on and things the District could improve on. The input was scribed on chart paper and will be transcribed for use as the District works on its LCAP update. FRANK LEDESMA SCHOOL

This week our data team, along with some Attendance clerks, attended a CASBO workshop for Pupil Attendance Accounting Strategies. We learned a lot, and were especially reminded of the importance of getting our students to school every day as our funding depends greatly on it. Also there is so much work that our Attendance clerks have to do to keep accurate records of all tardies and absences so that everything is in order for the Auditors. Much kudos to our attendance staff!

Special Education Department Universal Design for Learning

Principle I: Provide Multiple Means of Representation (the “what” of learning) Learners differ in the ways that they perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them. For example, those with sensory disabilities (e.g., blindness or deafness); learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia); language or cultural differences, and so forth may all require different ways of approaching content. Others may simply grasp information quicker or more efficiently through visual or auditory means rather than printed text. Also learning, and transfer of learning, occurs when multiple representations are used, because it allows students to make connections within, as well as between, concepts. In short, there is not one means of representation that will be optimal for all learners; providing options for representation is essential.

NEW TEACHER SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

New Teacher Support & Development Coordinator Julia Turner

Kester Bantin New Teacher Support TOSA

Opportunities to Grow “Do you absolutely believe that every single student who enters your door can learn to the highest levels possible?” poses the seminar speaker. “Which students are the most afraid of taking risks?” She answers that research attests that students who have been told all their lives that they are smart. Hmm! Last week during the three days CISC Conference in Monterey, I was immersed in new opportunities for students learning via digital interaction with and about content, such as through using padlets, Seesaw, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Photo Math (Uh-oh, if you want to be surprised, take a look at Photo Math, free app.) and through discussions about brain synapses, growth mindset vs. fixed mindset, “sticky learning,” seeing patterns in text, differentiating learning, lions and tigers and bears! Oh my! Additionally, while I was in Monterey, seventeen new teachers spent the weekend at the CTA New Teacher Weekend 2018 in Burlingame. SUSD CTA funded six to attend; EEG funded eleven to attend. I imagine our new teachers’ returning with rekindled fire in their bones! Watch-out principals! Regarding new teachers, Kester Bantin joined the HR recruit team attending the Teacher Fair at CSUMB. According to Principal Abbie Madsen, my elbow partner during a Thursday-morning CISC session, shared excitedly that the recruit team interviewed insightful young to-be teachers. Finally and tangentially, because of EEG funds during this and last year, we have enjoyed opportunities to learn in myriad venues within and without SUSD. Certainly, we will miss the funds when they are gone! What a wonder to have opportunities to learn from others! Unlocking the Future Today! LCAP #5: SUSD will attract, recruit, support, and retain a highly effective and diverse workforce. LCAP #2: Proficiency for all: SUSD will provide a high quality and comprehensive instructional program.
