Sam Gilliam has developed major innovations in the field of painterly abstraction. Since the beginning of his practice in the 1960s, the artist has addressed the conceptual and aesthetic issues raised by color field painting and Abstract Expressionism, while successfully engaging with monumentality by creating environments with his paintings. His works are developed through a careful combination of planning and improvisation, something the artist borrows from his interest in jazz. The draped paintings presented at the Marrakech Biennale are exemplary of this approach. In this series, the canvases come off the stretchers to become spatial constructions of color. By expanding the space of painting into the third dimension, the artist transforms this traditionally two-dimensional technique into sculptural and architectural work that reacts to the space in which it is presented and physically engages with the viewer. Through his theatrical and protean work, Gilliams has been defying stereotypes of painting, abstraction, and African American art for over forty years.
Sam Gilliam a développé des innovations majeures dans le domaine de l’abstraction picturale. Depuis le début de sa pratique dans les années 1960, l’artiste a abordé les questions conceptuelles et esthétiques soulevées par le Color Field painting et par l’expressionnisme abstrait, avec un engagement réussi pour la monumentalité par la création d’environnements pour ses peintures. Son travail combine planification et improvisation, en lien avec son intérêt prononcé pour le jazz. Les peintures drapées présentées à la Biennale de Marrakech sont caractéristiques de cette approche. Dans cette série, les toiles de détachent de leur châssis afin de devenir des constructions spatiales de couleurs. En étendant l’espace du tableau vers la troisième dimension, l’artiste transforme cette technique traditionnellement deuxdimensionnelle en oeuvres sculpturales et architecturales qui répondent à l’espace dans lesquelles elles sont présentées et qui engagent physiquement le spectateur. A travers son œuvre théâtrale et protéiforme, Gilliams défie les stéréotypes de la peinture, de l’abstraction et de l’art afro-américain depuis plus de quarante ans.
