Ahmed Mater is a medical doctor, co-founder of Edge of Arabia, and artist, whose practice incorporates multiple mediums from photography to video and installation. Mater is interested in the social and aesthetic manifestations of Islamic and traditional culture in today’s increasingly globalized and modernized world, a theme that he often revisits. For the Marrakech Biennale, Mater presents work from an ongoing project thqt critically examines the current transformations and urban development of Mecca, where pilgrimage and tourism are growing at an astonishing rate. In the context of the Palais El Badii, Songs of Cyanosis takes shape as an installation displaying fragments of historical Islamic ornaments and decorations from the Islamic holy city. These pieces were retrieved from the city, where urban development and increasing privatization, in conformity with the Wahhabi precept against the praising of material objects, has led to the discarding of local artifacts. Songs of Cyanosis, beckons the question on the veneration of objects or their disposal.
Ahmed Mater est médecin, co-fondateur de Edge of Arabia et artiste, dont la pratique inclut de multiples médiums dont la photographie, la vidéo et les installations. Mater s’intéresse aux manifestations sociales et esthétiques de la culture islamique et traditionnelle dans un monde de plus en plus globalisé et modernisé. Un thème qu’il revisite régulièrement. Pour la Biennale de Marrakech, Mater présente une œuvre d’un projet en cours, Songs of Cyanosis, qui examine de manière critique les transformations et développements urbains actuels à La Mecque, où le pèlerinage et le tourisme se développent à un rythme surprenant. Dans le contexte du Palais El Badii, Songs of Cyanosis prend la forme d’une installation qui présente des fragments d’ornements et de décorations islamiques historiques provenant de la ville sainte de l’Islam. Ces pièces furent récupérées dans la ville, où les développements urbains et la privatisation accrue, en conformité avec le précepte wahhabi contre l’éloge des objets matériels, a mené au rebut d’artefacts locaux. Songs of Cyanosis, pose la question de la vénération d’objets ou de leur élimination.
