The Otolith Group is the duo of filmmakers and writers Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, whose practice questions histories of colonialism and utopia through a documentary and archival approach. Their filmic explorations develop new perspectives on the history of the 20th century and reimagine the postcolonial future while triggering the viewer’s awareness of the present. In the Year of the Quiet Sun (2013) investigates macro-politics through a detail of public life historically imbued with governmental propaganda: stamps. It explores the stamps produced by the Ghana Philatelic Agency between 1964–65 in honor of the first international expedition to investigate the sun’s surface launched in a year of minimum solar temperature, a phenomenon that occurs every 11 years. Stamps and other historical documents emerge as emblematic of the tenuous postcolonial imagery, political contradictions, and Pan-Africanism of forming nations during the Cold War. The lower political heat of those years, along with their celebratory rhetoric, would soon be disrupted by the numerous coups and uprisings that spread across Africa. The stamps are now housed in a New York collection.
The Otolith Group est un duo de cinéastes et d’écrivains – Anjalika Sagar et Kodwo Eshun – dont la pratique interroge les histoires du colonialisme et l’utopie à travers le documentaire et l’archive. Leurs explorations filmiques développent de nouvelles perspectives de l’histoire du 20e siècle et réimaginent le futur post-colonial en faisant appel à la conscience du spectateur au présent. In the Year of the Quiet Sun (2013) questionne la macro-politique à travers un détail de la vie publique historiquement imbue de propagande gouvernementale : les timbres. Ils étudient les timbres produits par l’Agence Philatélique du Ghana entre 1964–65 en l’honneur de la première expédition internationale destinée à sonder la surface du soleil, et lancée une année de température solaire moindre, un phénomène qui a lieu tous les 11 ans. Les timbres et autres documents historiques apparaissent comme emblématiques de l’imagerie ténue post-coloniale, des contradictions politiques et du panafricanisme qui forgent les nations durant la Guerre froide. L’ardeur politique moindre de ces années et leur rhétorique festive seraient bientôt interrompues par les nombreux coups et soulèvements qui se propagèrent à travers l’Afrique. Les timbres se trouvent maintenant dans une collection à New York.
