CEPT UNIVERSITY CEPT University focuses on understanding, designing, planning, constructing and managing human habitats. Its teaching programs build thoughtful professionals and its research programs deepen understanding of human settlements. CEPT University also undertakes advisory projects to further the goal of making habitats more livable. The University comprises five faculties. The Faculty of Architecture was established as the ‘School of Architecture’ in 1962. It focuses on design in the private realm. The Faculty of Planning, focused on planning in the public realm, was established in 1972 as the ‘School of Planning’. The Faculty of Technology, which concentrates on engineering and construction, was established in 1982 as the ‘School of Building Science and Technology’. The Faculty of Design was established in 1992 as the ‘School of Interior Design’. It deals with habitat related interiors, crafts, systems, and products. Faculty of Management is a newly established faculty from the Faculty of Technology Management and it focuses on Habitat and Project Management. CEPT University takes its name from the ‘Center for Environmental Planning and Technology’ (CEPT). CEPT and the various schools that it comprised were established by the Ahmedabad Education Society with the support of the Government of Gujarat and the Government of India. The Government of Gujarat incorporated CEPT as a university in 2005. The University Grants Commission recognized CEPT University under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 in 2007. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of the Government of India recognizes the University as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO).

It is my pleasure to introduce the CEPT University Graduating batch of 2017. These graduates have undergone an extensive training in the fields of Architecture, Design, Planning, Management and Technology and are best trained to work in any challenging work environment across the world. CEPT University has completed 54 years, this year. During this long journey, it has emerged as a premier university in the field of human habitat, focused on understanding, designing, planning, constructing and managing human habitats. The University offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs through the faculties of Architecture, Design, Management, Planning and Technology. The teaching programs at CEPT University focus on building professional capacities and therefore they are centered on ‘studios’ or ‘labs’. Here, students engage with well-designed life-like problems under the guidance of practicing professionals and academics. Besides, all UG students at CEPT intern in professional offices for one full semester which helps widen their exposure and understanding of the profession. As a result, CEPT graduates are industry-ready and can hit the ground running. CEPT is a truly diverse campus with students, teachers and researchers from across the world. CEPT students benefit a great deal from this diversity on the campus. Learning with students from a variety backgrounds encourages collaboration and fosters innovation and multi-cultural perspective on the challenges our country faces today particularly in the area of human habitat and settlement. I am confident that the CEPT graduates will add significant value to the organizations that they join. FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE Originally established in 1962 as the School of Architecture, the Faculty of Architecture at CEPT University is one of the vital centers of thought and education in the field of Architecture in India. It continues to aim for excellence in its teaching and research programs in the field of Architecture. The Faculty enjoys an excellent reputation both nationally as well as internationally. Architecture is situated in physical contexts, both natural and manmade. It is shaped by and helps to shape the form of settlements. It has to be responsive to cultural contexts of deep historical and ideological significance. It significantly affects the flows of resources and energy. Education at the Faculty is therefore based on the premise that an Architect is one of the responsible agents of societal change. Education must give the student a breadth of cultural exposure that shapes a reflective and critical outlook based on social and environmental awareness and responsiveness. This must be combined with the rigorous learning of the skills and disciplines necessary in the profession of Architecture. This twofold orientation and a well-developed pedagogical method have helped the school to become an outstanding center of Architectural thought, research and learning.

Bachelor of Architecture This five-year long program leads up to the award of the B. Arch. degree. It equips students with the competencies necessary for being effective professional architects and exposes them to the aesthetic, technical, social, political and ethical dimensions of the built environment. The program is centered on ‘studios’ where students are expected to resolve life-like design problems on their own. Courses, seminars, and workshops, which run parallel to studios, expose students to technology, history, architectural theory and various other dimensions of architecture.

Master of Architecture The two-year-long Masters Program in Architecture leads to award of the M. Arch degree. It enhances the skills of students holding a professional bachelors degree in architecture and provides them additional exposure to the aesthetic, technical, social, political and ethical dimensions of the built environment. The program also offers the possibility of, but does not require specializing in and obtaining a Major and/or a Minor in any of the following: 1. Architectural Design 2. History, Theory and Criticism 3. Urban Design 4. Conservation

Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Master of Landscape Architecture program provides professional education for development of landscape architecture in dense built environments and master plans through intense design education supported with strong engineering foundation. Students will acquire skills to practice landscape professionally through design and technical development aiding the construction of design.

Master of Landscape Design (MLD) Master of Landscape Design program provides professional education for development of regional landscape planning, geographical information systems, natural resources analysis and interpretation towards land development for various natural and human infrastructures. Students will acquire skills that enable them to analyze regions for carrying capacity, land use suitability, land capability as well as design of landscapes towards development and conservation of natural sustainable ecosystems. Besides, design explorations of small scale landscapes are integrated well within the studio exercises.

Ph.D in Architecture The doctoral program was started in the academic year 2014-15. The normal duration of the doctoral program is of 4 years with two admission cycles in an academic year. The doctoral program prepares the student for careers in teaching and research and focuses on developing breadth of knowledge of the whole field and depth of knowledge in an area of research interest.

FACULTY OF DESIGN Established in 1991 as the School of Interior Design at CEPT, the Faculty of Design at CEPT University has been the pioneer in formalizing the education of Interior Design in the country. Ever since its inception, the Faculty of Design has striven towards excellence in teaching and building theoretical grounds for the Interior Design profession. The Faculty of Design sees design as a cultural system that deals with all aspects of human evolution, the production of culture as well as unfolding of human imagination. Design is thus seen as an integrating force bringing together several streams of knowledge.

Bachelor of Interior Design CEPT University, through the Faculty of Design, offers a full-time five-year professional program in Interior Design, leading to the award of Bachelor of Interior Design (B.Id). The program is structured to allow students to understand human habitation by exposure to different contexts through various means like in-class lifelike experiences, field trips, living with craftsmen and case studies encountered at various phases in the student life. These engagements enable the students to be both reflective and responsive designers.

Master of Interior Architecture and Design Interior Architecture defines the immediate physical environment of a human being, encompassing spiritual, philosophical, mental and emotional relationships that connect man and space. As a profession, it provides for the changing needs of an individual and the world since it forms an intrinsic part of human endeavour towards the act of creating, adapting and expressing. Master of Design - Furniture Design The Faculty of Design at CEPT University has a new post graduate program in Furniture Design. The Master of Design – Furniture Design program is a two-year full-time, skill-based professional program which will prepare students as designers and innovators for the rapidly developing Indian furniture industry. The M. Design – Furniture Design program is a pragmatic response to the growing needs of the furniture industry and of the retail market to-day. The exponential rate of growth across all metros is leading to a huge demand for quality affordable furniture in all sectors.

FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT Master Of Habitat Management The Faculty of Management at CEPT University provides education and training in the area of Habitat Management. Habitat Management is the study and practice of the issues, challenges and solutions involved in the operation of our living spaces; human habitats. This covers both the public and private realm, ranging from settlements of various scales, townships or even institutions to managing the services and operations for the same. A two year Postgraduate Program in Habitat Management is offered by the Faculty of Management. This program is one of the first in Asia and the only one of its kind in India. It fills a long standing lacuna in management education about infrastructure service delivery - its maintenance and operations. The students are exposed to both the study of management as well as the study of the other related skills necessary to engage with human habitats. This ensures to create holistic professional who have an understanding of HR, Marketing, Information Technology, and Finance and also infrastructure and can better handle the challenge/ human habitats. It is a multi-disciplinary program with studio based learning methodology, which combined with the University’s open electives allow the students to forge their own path and learn through hands -on or live exercises.

FACULTY OF PLANNING Cities are the future of India, and other developing countries. Urban transformations, with emphasis on liveability, equity and sustainability, will be the key driver of India’s future in the coming half century, much like the East Asian and Latin American countries in the last 30 years. Urban planners anchor such urban transformations. The Faculty of Planning at CEPT University prepares intense and thinking professionals to meet this challenge. The Faculty of Planning was established in 1972 as School of Planning. The Faculty has full time, adjunct and visiting faculty members who bring on board wide ranging professional and research experiences. Some of them are sound theorists, some sound technocrats and some sound professionals, all with national and global exposure and linkages. Some of them are pioneers in their disciplines and have contributed to unique ideas about urban development. Some of them have widely published in books and national and international journals. Above all, the faculty members bring immense dedication and passion to work. The Faculty of Planning offers the following four programmes: 1. Bachelor of Planning 2. Bachelor of Urban Design (new programme launched in 2016-2017) 3. Master of Urban and Regional Planning 4. Ph.D in Planning

Bachelor of Planning Bachelor of Planning is a four-year undergraduate programme of Faculty of Planning which was started in 2011. This course is about providing the overall knowledge on many thematic areas that constitute the field of planning. The course is structured as a studio based learning in which the students have done hands on exercises in different areas of the city. The scale of these studios have ascended, from studying urban space and its surroundings till a regional level analysis and planning. The programme has offered core courses that has helped students in developing a keen mind about urbanisation processes, planning approaches, land use planning, economics,sociology and environmental issues. Furthermore, the students have been exposed to different aspects and dynamics of planning, such as transit-oriented development, slum improvement schemes, etc. In addition to this, the students are adept in teamwork, research and documentation along with software such as Arc GIS. The programme has been structured so as to allow students to undertake professional summer internship of 8-10 weeks and take up an independent research thesis.

Bachelor of Urban Design This five-year program gives students a professional training that equips them to work as designers in the public realm, and to analyze the urban environment, its systems, and its multiple scales. They are taught to use design skills and specific analytical tools, along with knowledge of the legal frameworks required for work in the public sphere. This is a new approach to design education that is tailored specifically for the urban realm, and brings together the study of the city and design in ways that encourage innovative, cross-disciplinary thinking and solutions to the problems we face in urban India.

Master of Urban and Regional Planning The two-year Master’s Degree Program in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) prepares young professionals for a career in one or many of these: (i) preparing plans and projects for the cities and their regions, (ii) undertaking research on policies and processes of urbanization and urban development, (iii) advising on governance of cities and their regions, and (iv) preparing projects and overseeing their execution in the areas of housing, transport, environment, infrastructure and urban design in India as well as other developing countries. The program offers the possibility of, but does not require, specializing in and obtaining a Major in any of the following: • Land use Planning • Housing • Environmental Planning • Infrastructure Planning • Transportation Planning

Doctoral Studies in Planning The doctoral program at the Faculty of Planning is designed to prepare the student to take up a lifelong pursuit of knowledge through research in diverse areas of habitat development. Students at the Faculty get opportunities to broaden their horizon in different areas of habitat while pursuing doctoral work in a specialised area. Like with the other programs at the University, the new doctoral program encourages students to take multidisciplinary approach in researching on issues of the contemporary society. They prepare themselves with academic and professional inputs from renowned in-house faculties and visiting fellows, to take up careers in teaching,research and advisory and consultancy services in the domain of urban planning and its allied sectors.

FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY In recent times, the construction industry has experienced a very high growth rate due to rapid expansion of industrialization and urbanization as a result of adoption of globalization and liberalization policies by Govt. of India. In order to meet the expectations of all stakeholders, a massive input of resources is required to strengthen, improve and enlarge the urban and industrial infrastructure. This calls for development of innovative technologies and judicious use of existing technologies including appropriate technologies. Competent technocrats to plan, design, construct and maintain the constructions will also be required. With a view to meet the challenges and requirement of this area, CEPT established the School of Building Science and Technology (SBST) in 1982 which is now called “Faculty of Technology” that focuses on the issues concerning planning, design, construction & management of Human Habitat. The mission of Faculty of Tachnology is to prepare the technocrats who can be the leaders in their profession with vision, zeal, passion, confidence and with excellent technical & leadership skills to succeed in the task of Nation building-in terms of helping India to achieve higher economic growth which is inclusive and sustainable, helping to improve the quality of life of people.

FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY All teaching programs at Faculty of Technology focus on building professional capacities and therefore, they are centred on studio based pedagogy, which is inclusive of simulation of real life projects (buildings, infrastructure etc.). Coursework, seminars and research assignments, aim at developing conceptual and analytical abilities of students, and skill-enhancing workshops support learning in studios and labs. Faculty of Technology (FT) offers a five–year undergraduate (UG) program in Construction Technology leading to degree of B.Tech (Hons) in Civil Construction. The program equips students with competencies necessary for being effective professional engineers and exposes them to technical, managerial and social dimensions of the built environment. FT also offers following five fulltime, two-year postgraduate (PG) programs leading to degree of Master of Technology (M. Tech): 1. Master of Technology in Construction Engineering & Management 2. Master of Technology in Structural Engineering Design 3. Master of Technology in Infrastructure Engineering Design 4. Master of Technology in Geomatics 5. Master of Technology in Building Energy Performance

B.Tech (Hons) in Civil Construction This five year undergraduate program in Construction Technology equips students with competencies necessary for being effective professional engineers and exposes them to technical, managerial and social dimensions of the built environment.

M.Tech in Construction Engineering & Management

This program aims to train engineers and architects to become competent professionals in the field of construction engineering, project management, contracts management, construction quality, safety, manpower and equipment management, supply chain management of construction projects, modern construction materials and technologies and computer applications in construction.

M.Tech in Structural Engineering Design The program is designed to enhance skills & knowledge of structural analysis & design of high-rise buildings, bridges, industrial structures, water retaining structures, etc., improving understanding about structural materials, sustainable construction practices and role and responsibilities of structural engineers.

M.Tech in Infrastructure Engineering Design In a developing country like India, infrastructure development has become an integral part of our growth story creating a strong need for professionals in the infrastructure sector. The program aims to combine infrastructure engineering and design enabling students to add complementary aspects such as infrastructure planning, design, financing, and management.

M.Tech in Geomatics Masters in Geomatics is designed “discipline neutral” for interdisciplinary graduate students and professionals. The course gives clear understanding of data acquisition system, GIS, information technology, resources application and analysis to the inter-disciplinary graduates and professionals. Geomatics extends into more contemporary methods including Global Positioning System, Digital Photogrammetry, LiDAR Technology, qualitative and quantitative analysis of satellite and aerial imagery specific to earth sciences and environmental applications.

M.Tech in Building Energy Performance Within the M.Tech. program in Building Energy Performance students learn to use state of the art tools to conduct simulations & assess building energy performance and contribute to the design of energy-efficient buildings, while considering the architecture and environment, occupants’ behaviour, their health and comfort.
