reflection

announcement

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee!” These are the words of Archangel Gabriel to our Blessed Virgin Mary at the moment of the Annunciation. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows might make us wonder how a Lady full of God’s grace and who is blessed with the Lord Himself becomes a Lady of sorrows! As we deeply ponder upon the life of our Blessed Mother, we will certainly discover that she is more intimately united with the Lord Jesus than any other human person in history. From the moment of Annunciation until today, she is very close to Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, in fulfilling God’s plan of salvation. In a unique manner she participates in both the sorrows and glories of our Lord Jesus Christ because of her full collaboration and total involvement in the divine plan of God. That is why we celebrate that closeness in every liturgical year.

As we continue our walk of Mercy, we are reminded money must serve, not rule! The Pope asks us all to help, respect, and promote mercy: “Not to share one’s wealth with others is to steal from them and to take away their livelihood. It is not our own goods which we hold.” Following Pope Francis’ message, we are called to be a light of hope! We can do that in such a beautiful way each fall by supporting a special collection known as the Fall Combined Collections. Our efforts to reach out to parishioners for support of several worthy causes through one big collection on the 3rd weekend in September helps us to live out the Works of Mercy, and give to something bigger than ourselves. The four worthy ministries who benefit are: Church Among Black & Native Americans; Church in Latin America; Church in Africa; Catholic Home Missions

TAKING ACTION: For Catholics  How are we called to care for God’s creation?  How may we apply our social teaching with its emphasis on the life and dignity of the human person, to the challenge of protecting the earth, our common home?  What can we in the Catholic community offer to the environmental movement, and what can we learn from it?  How can we encourage a serious dialogue in the Catholic community—in our parishes, schools, colleges, universities and other settings— on the ethical dimensions of the environmental issue?

"He is the One whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.” Acts 5:31

Reflection on the exaltation of the holy cross The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on the 14th of September. On this day we honor the Holy Cross on which Christ died out of love for us, and by his death on the Cross he brought Salvation to the world. The Cross of Christ is the instrument of love through which God saved us. Adoration of the Cross is the adoration of Jesus Christ, the God Man, who suffered and died on this Roman instrument of torture to save us from sin and death. The Cross represents the One Sacrifice by which Jesus, obedient even unto death, accomplished our salvation. The Cross is a symbolic summary of the Passion, Crucifixion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. The Cross today is the best-known religious symbol of Christianity. It reminds Christians of God's act of love in Christ's sacrifice at Calvary, where he gave His life for us, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him may not perish, but have everlasting life.” The Cross also reminds Christians of Jesus' victory over sin and death, since it is through His Death and Resurrection Jesus conquered death and gave us new life. The Cross symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ through which he saved humanity, and today it is presented as an instrument of Christ's triumph. Our faith tells us that the Cross is an instrument of our God's saving Love.
