EVANS BAY INTERMEDIATE INFORMATION 2017 Our School Evans Bay Intermediate School (EBIS) is a multi-cultural school specialising in the learning needs of Year 7 and 8 students. We opened in 1964 and cater for students in the Southern and Eastern suburbs. Our school is well governed by a dedicated Board of Trustees and fully staffed by an enthusiastic team who strive to implement the School’s vision, mission and values. Our school is set in a picturesque location overlooking Evans Bay, with many great facilities nearby such as the ASB Stadium, Newtown Park Stadium, Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre and the Kilbirnie Library, all of which are used for school activities.

Our Curriculum The curriculum is delivered through a combination of generalist (class teacher) and specialist teachers. Every student has a homeroom, with a homeroom teacher and a syndicate team which they belong to. The curriculum is taught by the homeroom teacher and this includes: 

Integrated Inquiry Learning – incorporating The Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Technology and Health curriculums, is taught though units planned schoolwide with a new focus each term. Children are scaffolded into the key learning for each unit and then move into developing and carrying out their own inquiry. Their individual inquiries are assessed using SOLO taxonomy centred around the inquiry process.

Sport and Physical Education School based programmes A wide range of sports activities and options are provided to all students throughout the year. All students participate in physical education (PE) lessons focusing on skill development, positive participation, fitness and teamwork. The school PE shirt and shorts are expected to be worn for all Sport and PE modules. EBIS has two main school-wide sporting events with plenty of practice leading up to the event – School Athletics (T1 at Newtown Stadium) and Cross Country (T2 a 3km course inside and around the school grounds). Variety Sport Another important feature of the PE programme is Variety Sport held every second year. This introduces students to a much broader range of sporting activities, e.g. rock climbing, mountain biking, table tennis, kayaking, gymnastics, using many of the city’s amenities. EOTC – Education Outside the Classroom Students at EBIS are offered a wide variety of programmes, many of which require visits outside the classroom. Most of these trips will involve some cost but you will always be informed. The main EOTC event is held every second year where for one week student’s complete activities as a syndicate in the Wellington Region. Some of the events involve Fergs Kayak and Rock Climbing; Matiu-Somes Island; Adrenaline Forest and The Amazing Race in the Wellington CBD. EOTC is intended to build student confidence and help establish strong friendships with peers. Parents are welcome to assist syndicates on their day trips.

Out of school options During term time the school offers a range of sporting activities before and after school for the students which include badminton, floorball, netball and underwater hockey. Inter Intermediate sporting opportunities EBIS is involved in boys and girls Year 7 and 8 mixed sports for the Wellington Inter Intermediate competitions which include: basketball, softball, rugby 7’s, rugby, touch rugby, swimming, athletics, cross country, floorball, waterpolo, underwater hockey, hockey, football and netball. Student’s trial for positions on these teams and once selected train with their coaches for the competitions. This offers our top sports students the opportunity to take part in a competitive environment with great camaraderie.

Special Programmes Extension and Empowerment Programmes EBIS is committed to meeting the needs of students both the ‘gifted and talented’ and those interested in ‘empowerment’. By using a number of identification processes, students with particular abilities or talents are identified for inclusion in extension classes. Students with particular interests or needs are also supported through empowerment programmes such as those with English as a second language ESOL. These students are supported by the class teacher and teacher aides. Other empowerment programs are run during the year either for the full year or in blocks of time by staff.

The school office is staffed between 8.00 am – 3.30 pm. Telephone enquiries about the progress or welfare of students are welcome at all times.

Absences Student absences must be explained by the parent/caregiver. Students should not be sent to school if they are unwell. The school office would appreciate a telephone call or email ([email protected]) before classes begin so class teachers can be notified of absences. If a student absence is unexplained you will receive a text message, asking for a response as to their absence. Students going home for lunch require parental permission. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the day. If students arrive late or leave during the day to go to an appointment, they must sign in and out at the school office. Activity Donation/Technology Fee A family donation is set each year by the Board of Trustees. This money enables the school to make a range of purchases for equipment, material and programme needs. Families are charged a fee to cover the cost of consumable items used in the Technology programme. Behaviour Management EBIS is a PB4L (Positive Behaviour For Learning) school, where we acknowledge and reward appropriate student behaviour, through the use of Blue Slips, Student Leader slips and Yellow slips leading to Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards. The school also uses ‘Congratulations Cards’. These are posted home to students by classroom teachers. All classroom teachers and syndicate teams also have a variety of their own awards. As a staff we believe in ‘looking for great behaviour, celebrating and encouraging it’. For the safety of all students, EBIS has a schoolwide behaviour management plan which staff follow. This involves investigating behavioural incidents and putting in place consequences for unacceptable behaviour. Bicycles Cycle racks are provided at school. Students’ bicycles should be locked at school and each student who brings a bike is asked to supply a padlock (preferably with a combination lock so that the bike can be secured to the rack). The school does not replace lost or stolen bicycles. Pumps and other removable equipment should not be left on bicycles. Helmets are required by law and can be stored in the classroom.

Buses School buses transport students home each day. They leave the school at approximately 3.00pm. Buses travel to Miramar, Miramar Heights, Strathmore and Seatoun. Bus routes are located on the school website and in the school library. BYOD (Bring your own device)

As of term 3 2016 Evans Bay Intermediate, is provisioned for students to bring their own devices to school. Devices for BYOD The following are the considerations we ask you to take into account: If you are purchasing a device for your child:  The device must have a keyboard.  The device must have a working battery with a minimum of 6 cells (i.e. 6 hours battery life).  It needs to be 802.11n or 802.11ac – wireless.  The device must be able to access and edit Google Documents  Ensure the device isn’t too heavy for your child to carry  Provide some protection for the device whilst being carried  Check with the College your child is going to as to what they require. If your child has a device already we are happy for them to bring those if:  It is an Apple product – less than 6 years old  Windows PC’s must either run Windows 8 or 10  iPads and tablets are fine We are not able to cater for Linux machines. Class placement All children are placed in classes after consultation with the teachers at their previous school. If you would like to talk about the needs of your child please contact our Deputy Principal Marie Okeby prior to the end of term 3 - [email protected] or 9393247. On the first day of school class teachers read out the names of the children in their classes after the powhiri on the first day of school. Year 8 remain with their Year 7 teacher for the two years unless there is an important reason for them to move. We find this provides stability for the students in their years with us. Dental Clinic A mobile dental clinic visits the school approximately once a year. Teeth are checked and parents are informed if follow up work is required. First Day of School On the first day of school students need to bring their stationery to school. All year 7’s and new year 8’s meet in the courtyard with their parents ready to be welcomed into the school with a powhiri. A letter will come home before the end of the year giving families more information about this. The year 8 students arrive at school earlier than the year 7’s and prepare for the powhiri with the staff. After the powhiri, teachers read out the names of the children in their classes and class by class leave the hall to start the day. Homework Learning to work independently at home is seen as a further development of curriculum interests worked on in the classroom. Our homework philosophy is designed to develop independent study habits, time management skills and self-discipline. Homework must be relevant to the classroom programme. We offer a free homework club which is led by staff and takes place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2.50pm – 4.00pm in the school library. It is important that your child is registered for this and you let the school know if they are unable to attend for any reason on their nominated day or days. Library and Lost Books The School has an excellent library which classes visit on a weekly basis. The library is open during the lunch breaks for those students who prefer to read, play board games or study in. Students are encouraged to read widely and the reading of school library books is encouraged as a homework activity. Our library books are an important asset. When a library book is lost by a student the School requests payment from the parent/caregiver to replace the book.

Lunch Orders A range of lunches can be ordered online www.wrapitup.co.nz and these are delivered to school. Options include:  Kiwi lunches – everyday  Sushi - Wednesday  Pita Pit – Thursday On Friday children can also order Hells Pizza. They must do this in the hall before the first bell at 8.40am. Mandarin Children are given the opportunity to learn Mandarin through the Confucius Institute during their time at Evans Bay Intermediate. A Chinese tutor comes to the school and teaches the students in class groups for a period of time each year. As well as learning the language they also learn about some Chinese culture such as calligraphy and martial arts. Mufti Days Mufti days occur once a month with the date being listed in the school calendar which can be accessed through the school website www.ebis.school.nz Students wishing to wear mufti need to bring $2 to their class teacher on mufti day. Should your child not want to wear mufti they must come to school in their school uniform. Newsletter/Bulletin/Notices to Parents The EBIS Bulletin is produced every week and is emailed home on a Thursday. All information, including sports registration forms, reminders of events happening in the school can also be found on the school website www.ebis.school.nz Open day and night There will be an Open Day to see the school in action and an open night on Tuesday 30 August 2016. The open day will be from 9am – 2.30pm and the open night between 6 – 8pm. If you wish to come during the day please come to the Office first and sign in. Some of our school leaders will be there to show you around. Personal Property Students are required to hand in all valuable items (e.g. electronic devices and wallets etc.) to their class teacher at the beginning of each day. Each classroom has a security cupboard where the valuable items will be stored during the course of the day. The School accepts no responsibility for valuables not stored in the secured cupboard.

Reporting to Parents The school communicates formally with parents/caregivers three times a year through written reporting and parent interviews. Parent/Teacher interviews take place in Term 1 and the beginning of Term 3 and written reports are sent home at the end of Term 2 and Term 4. School Hours The school is open for instruction from 8.45am until 2.55pm Monday to Friday. We encourage families not to allow students to arrive before 8.30am as staff are not on duty before school and classrooms will not be open. First bell 8.40am

Skateboards and Scooters Skateboards and scooters can be brought to school any day but are to be used only on the backcourts during break and lunchtime. Ramps and other materials, which are likely to damage the asphalt surface are not allowed. Any student who brings a scooter is asked to supply a padlock (preferably with a combination lock and secured to the bike rack). Skateboards can be stored in the classroom. The school does not replace lost or stolen skateboards or scooters. Stationery A stationery list will be available for all students prior to the start of the New Year. It will also be available on the school website. The school carries a small amount of stock but all stationery can be purchased at a local stationery shop.

Uniform EBIS has a school uniform which we want our students to wear with pride. It is important for students to wear the correct uniform both for their own sense of wellbeing and to look smart out in the community as it reflects well on the school. We ask that parents ensure that students wear the correct uniform to school each day and send a note if there is some reason that they are unable to. The uniform consists of:

 EBIS polo shirt  EBIS shorts  EBIS long pants  EBIS long sleeved polar fleece  EBIS PE shirt  Ankle socks – black or white  Closed in shoes Other items which may be worn are:  Long sleeved black polyprops (winter) under their polo shirts  Watch  Simple studs  Black or EBIS blue head bands  Black or EBIS blue beanies – worn outside only  Black or EBIS blue caps or sunhats – worn outside only Our students come from different ethnic backgrounds and different religious groups. Students can therefore wear such things as a cross, pounamu, or black or EBIS blue head scarf with their uniforms.

The following items students are asked not to wear:  Hoodies  Makeup  Nail polish  Leggings, tights, or knee high socks  Necklaces, earrings, bracelets  Extreme permanent hair colour i.e. red, yellow, blue, green pink At our end of term discos and on mufti days, students have the opportunity to wear all the things that they love to wear.
