Weekly Incident Summary June 1 – 7, 2015 HALTON HILLS, ON – Monday, June 1, 2015 12:18 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a report of a carbon monoxide “CO” alarm activation on Lasby Lane in Acton. On scene, staff met with the homeowner who had noticed a chirping sound coming from their ‘CO’ smoke alarm. Fire staff replaced the battery and cleared the scene. 23:50 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Highway 7 and Crewson’s Line in Acton. While enroute, fire staff was advised they were not required. Fire staff continued to respond due to their proximity to the accident. Upon arrival on scene, Halton Regional Police advised that the driver was out of the vehicle and in the care of ambulance staff. No further action required. Tuesday, June 2, 2015 18:42 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a grass fire on Armstrong Avenue. On scene staff found a pile of garbage burning with old tires, wire and other rubbish, with no-one on site. Fire staff was unable to locate building personnel. There is no burn permit for this location. Staff extinguished the fire and cleared the scene. Wednesday, June 3, 2015 07:41 Hours - Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Corey Circle. On scene, fire staff checked the premise for CO and found nothing. Staff turned on the furnace, hot water, and gas fire place and still had 0 readings. 09:45 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of a natural gas leak on Queen Street in Acton. Upon arrival, it was noted that the source was from the restaurant. Staff spoke to the owner who advised that a burner was left on overnight with the pilot light out. The source of the gas was shut off. Staff vented the affected unit and cleared the scene. 09:57 Hours - Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Green Street in Norval. Upon arrival on scene, staff could hear a smoke alarm sounding from the garage. Staff entered the garage and pulled the battery out of the smoke alarm. The house was under renovations. Two smoke alarms were left in the garage while renovations were being completed. 11:35 Hours - Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Morden Neilson Way. Upon arrival on scene, staff were advised by contractors that dust from cutting had set off the alarm.
2 11:36 Hours - Fire fighters responded to a burn complaint on Main St N in Georgetown. On scene, staff found building materials from a renovation being burnt in a 45 gallon barrel as well as a second pit area down the yard and the fires were unattended. Fire staff extinguished the fires and left a business card with the neighbour. There was no permit at this address and no one living there because of the renovations. 13:12 Hours - Fire fighters responded to a second burn complaint on Main St N in Georgetown. On scene, staff found the homeowner at the property, with both fires relit. Fire staff advised the homeowner that it violated the permit by having two fires, no water, no supervision of the fire, and also burning debris from the house caused by the renovations. Staff extinguished the fire the second time as per directions dealing with burn complaints. Thursday, June 4, 2015 08:21 Hours - Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Third Line in Erin. Fire and ambulance arrived on scene together. Staff assisted ambulance as required and cleared the scene. 15:37 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a structure fire on 17 Sideroad, east of Fifth Line. Upon arrival on scene, staff found the garage fully involved. The fire was knocked down very quickly. Staff spoke with the property owners who advised that they could smell smoke and when they looked outside all they could see was smoke billowing out of the garage. It is believed to have started in the corner of the garage and staff suspects the ride on lawn mower was the cause. 15:50 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation in the area of Mountainview Rd S and Argyll Road. On scene, staff met with the store manager who advised that there were smoldering wood chips in the flower bed in front of the store. The store manager had used the stores garden hose to wet down the wood chips. There were no issues found. The manager was told to keep an eye on the flower bed. 17:01 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Winston Churchill Blvd, south of 10 Sideroad. On scene, fire staff was directed to an office where staff was advised that while sweeping up the dust had set off the alarm. Fire staff verified which alarm was activated and it was reset. 18:03 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Eramosa/Milton Townline in Milton. On scene, staff spoke with ambulance staff who advised that Fire was not required. 20:52 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist for the report of an infant with their leg stuck between crib bars, in the area of Mountainview Rd S and Sargent Road. On scene, staff pried the bars open and freed the baby's leg and did a quick assessment of the baby until ambulance arrived and took over patient care. Friday, June 5, 2015 08:34 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Baylor Crescent. On scene, staff assisted with patient care and cleared the scene.
3 09:35 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a fire on Gardiner. On scene, staff found a pool heater burning in the backyard. The homeowner was unaware there was a fire in their backyard. They had replaced an electrical part of the pool heater a week ago and they had just plugged the heater in 20 minutes before fire arrived on scene. The pool heater was destroyed with some fire damage to the hoses and connections. Power and gas was shut off to the heater. 15:01 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist on Mill Street East in Acton. A concerned resident had contacted the fire department for a recycling bin that had blown over. The contents consisted of "medical waste" from the dental clinic. On scene fire staff cleaned up the area and secured the bin so it would not blow over again. Saturday, June 6, 2015 00:02 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a structure fire on Dublin Line. Fire staff arrived on scene to a fully involved abandoned barn fire which ignited the adjacent house which was also vacant. The barn was completely consumed so staff concentrated on extinguishing the house and protecting the surrounding areas in a defensive mode. 01:38 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of an unattended open air burn on Regional Road 25, north of 15 Sideroad. On arrival a pile of wood was found on fire which was extinguished by staff as no valid permit existed. 08:49 Hours – Fire fighters responded back to the earlier fire on Dublin Line. Fire staff was requested to attend to extinguish small fires that had reignited.in the structure and a few hay bales. Crews pulled apart the hay bales, and extinguished the spot fires. 15:12 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Mountainview Road South and Guelph Street. Upon arrival on scene, fire staff found all patients outside of their vehicles and no medical attention was required. Fire staff used absorbant on leaking fluid from one of the vehicles. 16:34 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Jolana Cr. On scene staff met with the homeowner who advised that their smoke/CO alarm was sounding. Crews checked the home with the gas detector and no readings were found. The homeowner was advised to air the unit out and replace if necessary. 17:25 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a burn complaint on Main St S in Acton. On scene staff met with the homeowner who was having a small fire in the back yard burning off yard waste. Advised them of the burn permit requirements and extinguished the fire. 21:11 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a burn complaint in the area of Hwy 7 and Sixth Line. Staff could not locate the source of any smoke and returned to the station. 22:18 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an inquiry that fire was again burning at the earlier Dublin line fire. On scene staff met with the caller and explained the situation to them. Although the fire was burning inside the foundation, it was contained within the area. No action required.
4 22:25 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a police assist on John Street. A U-Haul Truck hit the mansard roof facade which pulled it away from the building. As the facade was not secure, the property owner was advised to have his tenants move their vehicles on to the road so the area directly beneath the facade could be taped off. The property owner will contact his insurance provider and the property was turned back over to the owner. 22:32 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist on Main St S in Georgetown. On scene, staff met with the unit owner who was concerned about a cloth left in the oven. The oven door had locked from the self-cleaning setting. Crews ensured the oven was not heating and provided instruction to the owner for unlocking the oven door in the pre-set mode. No further action required. Sunday, June 7, 2015 19:30 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on John Street. After crews completed a lengthy search for the problem, new tenants finally spoke up and said that they had hit the heat detector. Fire staff put the system in silence and turned the building over to the building personnel to conduct a fire watch until the system could be restored. Signal as a matter of law, of courtesy, and of self-protection. Wear an appropriate helmet and never ride with headphones.
