Weekly Incident Summary January 23-February 5, 2017 HALTON HILLS, ON – Monday, January 23, 2017 04:55 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a structure fire on Sixth Line in Milton. On scene fire staff met with Acting Milton Fire Chief. Fire staff cut the lock and opened the gate to the property. Command was transferred over to Milton fire. 08:47 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Winston Churchill Blvd. Halton Regional Police were on scene upon arrival. Fire staff provided patient care until ambulance arrived. 09:34 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a possible structure fire on Guelph St. On scene fire staff were directed by building staff to the second floor washroom where a vent had over heated and melted the cover and fan. The fan was unplugged and the area checked for any possible extension, with none found. Tuesday, January 24, 2017 05:27 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a person stuck in an elevator on McFarlane Dr. On scene fire staff were advised that the elevator had stopped at the third floor. Fire staff made contact with the lone occupant and confirmed they were not in distress. The elevator repair company was contacted and advised they would attend on scene within the hour. During this time fire staff monitored the condition of the occupant in the elevator and made attempts to unlock the elevator door with no success. The elevator technician arrived on scene and was able to manually open the door and release the occupant. The technician was to remain on scene and do the necessary repairs. 07:07 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a possible structure fire on Sixth Line in Milton. On scene fire staff conducted a search of the area and determined that it was a rekindle from the previous fire. There were some large bales of hay smoldering. Milton Fire arrived on scene and command was transferred to them. 09:33 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Trafalgar Road. On scene fire staff entered the home and removed the detector in the hallway, causing the remaining alarms to stop. Fire staff advised the homeowner to replace the faulty detector. 11:01 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist on Dominion Gardens Drive. On scene fire staff assisted the homeowner with battery replacement and other smoke and CO related questions.

15:07 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a burn complaint on Dufferin St. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who was burning without a valid burn permit. The fire was extinguished and the homeowner was advised to obtain a burn permit for any future burns. 16:08 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an odour investigation on Corey Circle. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who complained of an odour and a vibration in the wall. Fire staff found the doorbell had shorted out and was the reason for the problem. The power to the doorbell was turned off. 18:13 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Ridgegate Cres for a new home under construction. Upon arrival on scene it was observed that the strobe lights of the CO/smoke detectors were going off throughout the unit under construction. Fire staff observed that a propane heating unit was being used to heat the house and was connected to an outside gas meter. Fire staff shut off shut off the outside gas meter to the heating unit and command was terminated. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 13:58 Hours - Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Sargent Road. On scene, Halton Regional Police advised Fire that a tenant had fallen, was injured and could not get to the door. Ambulance required the master key to the building to enter the apartment. Once entry was established, ambulance informed fire staff that they were no longer required. 17:22 Hours - Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Robinson Road. On scene fire staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings. The home has a CO detector located outside the bedroom area and has an expiry date of 2018. Thursday, January 26, 2017 20:37 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of a transformer on fire on Sixth Line. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who advised that while working in the garage saw the light flicker off and on in the house and then the lights went out. The homeowner went to the front of the home where the smell of burning was noticed, along with the sound of the transformer humming. Fire staff, using a thermal imaging camera, checked around the hydro pole for any heat, with none found. Hydro arrived on scene and cleared fire. Friday, January 27, 2017 10:08 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist on Main St S. On scene, fire staff investigated a gas/rotten type smell in all three units at this location. Using detectors, zero readings were found. Upon further investigation it was found that a garbage bin was the source of the odour. 16:09 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Eighth Line and Steeles Ave. On scene fire staff assessed two patients and awaited the arrival of ambulance and Halton Regional Police.

17:03 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Prince Charles Dr. On scene ambulance advised that fire was not required. Saturday, January 28, 2017 13:22 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Tanners Dr in Acton. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who was complaining of a burning odour in the kitchen near the light fixture area. No cooking had been done that day. Fire staff investigated all levels of the home, including the attic, with thermal imaging cameras and detectors, with nothing found. It is suspected that burnt dust on the light fixture, or a possible kettle appliance was the source of the odour. 15:06 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Todd Road. While enroute, fire staff was advised this was a false alarm. Workers doing demolition work had accidentally struck a pull station. 16:28 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Birchway Place in Acton. The homeowner was cooking large quantity of breakfast sausages in oven when grease had pooled and was ignited on the bottom of the stove. Fire staff left the oven closed & waited for fire to self-extinguish. Crews checked the cabinets, wall & stove for extension, with nothing found. 18:09 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Regional Road 25. On scene fire staff provided patient care until ambulance arrived and disabled both vehicles. Sunday, January 29, 2017 22:28 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Eden Place. On scene fire staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings. Fire staff advised the homeowner to replace the faulty detector and cleared the scene. Monday, January 30, 2017 12:10 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Queen St E in Acton. On scene building personnel advised that a new ATM machine was being installed and the contractors were cutting drywall, and dust set off the alarm. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 17:34 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on John St. On scene fire staff met with the tenant who advised that cleaning the stove had set the alarm off. Crews checked both inside and outside the stove and found no extensions. The unit was ventilated and cleared the scene. 17:57 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a vehicle fire on Steeles Ave. On scene, fire staff found light smoke coming from under the hood. Crews opened the hood and found fluids smoking on hot engine parts. The battery was disconnected and advised the owners to call for a tow. 19:24 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Main St N in Acton. On scene fire staff disabled the vehicles and were cleared from the scene by police.

Wednesday, February 1, 2017 22:27 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a public assist for the report of a smoke alarm sounding on Ridgegate Cr. Fire staff arrived on scene to a new home under construction with detectors sounding. CO readings of 35 ppm plus were taken from a small open basement window. High levels of CO from portable propane heater in the basement is the suspected cause of the detector activation. Crews shut the gas off from the exterior of the home. Thursday, February 2, 2017 12:37 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision on 32 Sideroad between Fourth and Fifth Line. On scene fire staff found a vehicle in the ditch, rolled on to its passenger side. The driver had exited the vehicle prior to arrival and was sitting in another car until ambulance arrived. Crews checked the vehicle for any issues and finding none, cleared the scene. 14:19 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Old Pine Crest Rd in Norval. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who advised that construction was being performed in the basement. Crews entered the home where it was confirmed an onsite false alarm. The home owner was advised to notify the alarm company while the work is being performed in the residence. 23:27 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Ridgegate Cr. Fire staff arrived on scene to a new home under construction with detectors sounding. CO readings as high as 50 ppm were detected. High levels of CO from portable propane heater in the basement is the suspected cause of the detector activation. All detectors were disabled as the occupancy is vacant. Friday, February 3, 2017 13:39 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Queen St E in Acton. On scene fire staff confirmed this was an accidental activation caused by a shelving unit hitting a pull station. The pull station and fire alarm panel were reset with no further concerns. 18:46 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Ridgegate Cr. Fire staff arrived on scene to a new home under construction with detectors sounding. CO readings as high as 45 ppm were detected. High levels of CO from portable propane heater in the basement is the suspected cause of the detector activation. All detectors were disabled as the occupancy is vacant. Saturday, February 4, 2017 11:22 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide activation on Kingham Rd in Acton. On scene staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings of CO. A new CO alarm was provided, installed and tested outside the sleeping area on the second floor. A smoke alarm was also provided, installed, and tested outside the sleeping area on the second floor to replace the existing expired alarm.

Sunday, February 5, 2017 10:42 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of 25 Sideroad & Dublin Line. On scene fire staff found a single vehicle in the ditch on the south side resting against a hydro pole. Fire staff provided patient care until ambulance arrived. Crews then stabilized the vehicle, and provided traffic control. The road was turned over to Halton Regional Police and Halton Hills Hydro arrived on scene when crews were clearing Weekly Safety Message Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart.
