Weekend Mass Celebrants July 15/16 4:00 PM Saturday ~ Fr. Michael 6:30 AM Sunday ~ Fr. Michael 8:30 AM ~ Fr. Mike 11:00 AM ~ Bishop Lawrence Persico

ERIE, PA

From the Rector’s Desk…. Today is our Annual Mission Appeal. A member of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament is speaking at all of our weekend Masses. The second collection this weekend goes directly to help the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in their ministry to the poor in Africa and Asia. This is our opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in the Universal Church. Your generosity is most appreciated. Mark your calendars that Tuesday, August 8, the Erie Community Foundation is once again sponsoring "Erie Gives Day" from 8:00 am-8:00 pm. St. Peter Cathedral Parish is participating in this day. This year with the proceeds from the Erie Gives Day I would like to replace parts of the sidewalk along West 10th Street and paint the rod iron fence around the Cathedral. Last year we replaced some of the sidewalk along West 10th Street, and I want to continue that project this year. As of this writing, I do not have a price for these projects. As soon as I get a price, I will be sure to share it with you. This afternoon (Sunday) Fr. David Renne officially moves into the Cathedral Rectory. It has been a busy week trying to put the finishing touches on his rooms. We began to renovate these rooms before we knew Fr. David was going to move in with us. The area Fr. David will be living is the same area Msgr. Barcio lived. We knocked down a wall to make his sitting room bigger and added a wall to make it a self-contained suite consisting of a large sitting room, bedroom, bathroom and walk in closet. With the completion of this suite, we now have three self-contained suites on the second floor of the rectory. We still have two guest rooms, two bathrooms and the kitchen to renovate before we are finished. We have really accomplished a lot in these past four years. God will bless you for your generosity. Do not forget that on Sunday, July 30th, St. Peter Cathedral will be hosting Supper for the Needy at the Church of the Covenant. We are asking people to donate a package of Smith Hot Dogs, make macaroni, potato or pasta salads, bake a dessert, give a monetary donation or pray for the success of this dinner. If you can help in any way, please sign up after Mass in the back of church. What a wonderful way to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need. Several people have asked about Fr. Jason and if he is still helping here at the Cathedral because they have not seen him lately. Yes, Fr. Jason is still very much around and helping here at the Cathedral. Since the beginning of May, Fr. Jason has been covering the weekend Masses in Franklin. Msgr. Herbein, the Pastor of St. Patrick in Franklin is recovering from back surgery and is doing much better. Fr. Jason should be back on for weekend Masses in July.

Do you do Mass? Does that sound irreverent to you? It is not intended to be. We are accustomed to think about attending Mass. We think about being AT Mass, being physically present and fulfilling our Sunday obligation. Do-ing at Mass involves action and activity. It includes what we typically think of as participation: standing, sitting, kneeling, singing, saying the responses. But really doing is more than those things. It goes beyond physical presence and words, tunes and postures. It involves us; our hearts, our faith and our priesthood. We are not all called to be ordained priests. We are a “priestly people” called to imitate Jesus. This is fully realized in our role at Mass. We confess our sinfulness as we empty ourselves in the opening rites. We are then nourished by prayerfully listening to the words of scriptures as they are proclaimed and then explained. At the Prayers of the Faithful, “the priestly people of God recover their proper and irreplaceable role of interceding for the needs of the Church and the world.” (Paul Ford, PastoralLiturgy,Org, 2015) Then in the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we offer ourselves and the fruits of the earth and the work our hands at the altar. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and

the instrumentality of the priest, they become the Body and Blood of Christ. We then give thanks for that gift which nourishes us to go out to love and serve. It's what we DO!

ake Me to Worship comes to Our Diocese Parishioners, please be aware that the Diocese of Erie is in support of the Take Me to Worship Campaign that will be running in the community from August 15 – October 30, 2017. The Bishop believes that the data about the positive impact that regular, weekly participation at Mass has on children of all ages is a good reason for our parishes in Erie County to jump aboard and promote this initiative. It is the hope of the diocese that more and more families will come back to their Catholic faith and/or bring about the conversion to Catholicism for those without a faith community. Please visit www.takemetoworship.org or contact the Family Life Office with additional questions at 814-824-1261 or [email protected].

A Family Perspective Today’s gospel is about being missionaries. As Jesus accepted his mission, parents accept the mission of raising a family. Parents are not alone in this exhausting and difficult vocation. Today Jesus calls us to himself when he invites us to “Come to me and I will give your rest.”
