From the Rector’s Desk…. Happy Labor Day Weekend to all, and a warm welcome to those who are visiting this holiday weekend. Know how good it is to have you with us at the Cathedral. Enjoy the last official weekend of summer and be safe. Spread the word that we will offer a 6:30 am Mass and a 9:00 am Mass on Labor Day. Confessions will be heard immediately following both Masses. Especially spread the word to those people who may not belong to the Cathedral parish. The Parish Office will be closed on Labor Day. The office will open on Tuesday at 9:00 am. Fr. David has been gone for a few weeks and is getting settled in at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. He started classes last Monday. We pray for him and his studies. I am sure it is an adjustment going back to school after being in a parish for four years. We look forward to his return to the Cathedral during his school breaks and vacations. I know I thanked you last week for your generosity toward the “Erie Gives Day,” but your generosity continues. We are still receiving donations from people who forgot about the day or were not able to give on that day. I will share with you the final total in a few weeks. The 2017 Catholic Education Collection will take place the weekend of September 16-17. The Catholic Faith, which we believe and practice, has been handed on through the centuries. Our challenge as Catholic faithful is the same: To hand on the faith to succeeding generations. Your help is needed to assist in this challenge. Please give generously to this year's Catholic Education Collection. One-half of this collection stays here at St. Peter Cathedral to help support our own religious education program. As always, know that your generosity is most appreciated. The work on the stairwell outside the Sacristy is complete and is beautiful! It is bright, clean and very welcoming. Please take a moment to check it yourself. Like I mentioned earlier, the stairwell was never heated and could get quite cold in the winter time. With the stairwell restoration we were able to put in a heater which will help keep the area warm on those cold winter days. There are a few pictures that I would like to hang, but will do that in the weeks to come. September is a busy month for weddings here at the Cathedral. We have a wedding every weekend this month and two on the last Saturday of the month. There are still plenty of openings for weddings in 2018. If you are interested in getting married here at the Cathedral please give me a call at 814-453-6677 and we can schedule your wedding.

Congratulations to Lauren Held and Liam Phillips who were united in the Sacrament of Marriage here at St. Peter Cathedral. May God bless them with many happy and healthy years together.
O God, you are my GodIt is you I seek! For you my body yearns: For you my soul thirsts… (PS 63:2) Today’s Responsorial Psalm describes our desire for God. As we seek, we learn. The more we learn, the more we are inspired to seek. Through our Fall Adult Education program, we have a wonderful opportunity to do both. “Catholicism: The Pivotal Players” will be offered in Synod Hall on Wednesdays from 7:00- 8:30 PM, September 13 through October 18. Please note that the program on 9/13 will run until 8:45. There is no charge for the program, but preregistration @
[email protected] or after Masses on September 2/3 and 9/10 will help us plan seating and refreshments. When Bishop Barron explains why he chose those featured in this first volume of Pivotal Players, he describes their contributions in terms of beauty, good and truth. He speaks particularly of Michelangelo inspiring us with the beauty of his masterpieces, St. Francis and St. Catherine of Sienna inspiring us with their lifelong commitment to the good and Newman, Aquinas and Chesterton as seekers of truth. The material Bishop Barron presents is captivating and at times, challenging. Each week we will have help from scholars who have studied the “players.” They will reflect on the DVD we watch, help us with historical and philosophical context and answer questions. This is an amazing opportunity for all of us. Here is the schedule---9/13- Michelangelo w/ Dr. Michael DeSanctis, Professor, Theology, Gannon University 9/20- Blessed John Henry Newman w/ Fr. Nick Rouch, Vicar for Education, Erie RCD 9/27- St. Thomas Aquinas w/ Fr. Jason Mitchell, Assistant Professor, Philosophy, Gannon University 10/4- St. Francis of Assisi w/Dr. James Menkhaus, Assistant Professor, Theology, Gannon University 10/11-St. Catherine of Sienna w/ Dr. Aaron Kerr w/ Assistant Professor, Philosophy, Gannon Univ. 10/18- G. K. Chesterton w/ Dr. Daniel Betti, Visiting Professor, Political Science, Gannon University
The choir will meet for the first time this season, at 10:15am on Sunday, September 17th. We are looking for new members. If you enjoy singing and want to become part of this Liturgical Ministry, please consider joining us. As a rule, we do not have rehearsals in the evening, except if needed for a large event. This year we are combining the Children’s Choir with the Adult Choir. If you have children already in the choir we hope to see them back this year. They will sing with the adults. It will give them excellent training in learning to sing harmony.

The Diocese of Erie is very excited about the opportunity to participate in the Take Me to Worship campaign that is being promoted in Erie County this summer and fall, August 15 – October 30, 2017. Data from this campaign has shown that when children participate in regular, weekly, organized religion, they are less likely to be involved in violence, drug and alcohol use, and committing suicide. Let’s take our families to mass regularly! To find out more and to get involved, please visit www.takemetoworship.org or contact the Family Life Office at 814-824-1261 or
[email protected].
Congratulations to Aphena June Tarbell daughter of Alexander Tarbell and Michelle Kowalski who was welcomed into the Church through the waters of baptism. May God bless her each and every day of her life.
